Alpha and Omega is a Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon-like experience. In this essay I will- *gets run over by a car, then another, then a semi-truck...*

Don't worry, there shouldn't be any more now unless they recast Kate. Probably best they stop. They stopped being good after the first one, and even the first one was mediocre at best.

y'know it's funny, despite my fondness for animated movies that are pretty bad, I still haven't seen Alpha and Omega. But I've seen quite a few of the Swan Princess sequels so I don't know if that says anything.
I gained a kind of cultural osmosis for the first movie though, through animash and animator youtube. Teenage animators on the internet at the time were either in the "wolf" adjacent camp, or were making homemade anime, and both harnessed with whatever raw tools available to them on their family computers in the noble pursuit of their vision. (the vision is wolf soap opera, which admittedly rules) wolf kids were lamenting the movie even back then, before there were any sequels. I can imagine how frustrating it would feel to get a wolf animated movie, finally, your favorite animal.... the COOLEST animal.... and it's goofy schlock instead of the epic sagas you were putting together in your living room with a box of nails and gorilla glue. (translation: MSpaint and Windows Movie Maker) I also remember a deleted scene of earlier designs surfacing and the cut designs being much more universally liked than what the final movie went with. For the most part Animash editors were just happy to get more footage of animal characters to set to pop songs to, so that goal was fulfilled. Most I think were just happy to have more wolf characters to use that weren't from Balto sequels or anime. Though I think at least one of them really enjoyed utilizing the movie solely for the setting. Not a ton of animated films focus on that American Country Wilderness setting outside of... Spirit? I'm sure there's others but they're slipping my mind. Regardless, pretty sure the first movie is more or less a diet version of Open Season. Less stylization in the art direction, a lot less wacky and a lot less unhinged, which stinks, a movie that's a lot more unabashedly off it's rocker is so much more fun to sit through. Any fondness I could possess for this movie only goes so far, it's evolved past that "bad wolf movie" and has become "that bad wolf movie editors will use like two or three scenes from" in reality the movie's gone from a full movie to something that exists for like maybe three scenes and everything past that is void. I feel like production history would be interesting on this movie, if there's ever a time period I'm bored enough I might deep dive into it. Ok never mind there's 7 sequels who asked for 8 Alpha and Omega movies?? I'm sorry for making fun of your sequel count Ice Age.... I didn't realize there was a higher power. Ok that's a lie yes I did, has anyone else seen how many Swan Princess Sequels there are? |

This is a bittersweet topic now that Hayden Panettiere has passed away.
