I said that if I was a betting man trump was going to win. And he did

I voted for Harris but her campaign was very lackluster compared to orange man. I think her campaign ran too center right and was vague and safe. Her slogans were all about hope and the future without really giving us ideas or plans besides abortion rights. Which I agree with. But there are a lot of Americans who don't care about abortion issues. She was pretty much set up for failure because she wasn't the choice the people wanted. There were no democratic primaries so it would be like if the Naruto manga ended and the writers introduced some new character who is related to Naruto but not as cool. It also doesn't help that one of the main campaign slogans was "she's better than trump"

Trump however had control over twitter and podcast appearances like Joe Rogan which probably helped sway a lot of voters. He even managed to get the younger audience with streamers like Adin Ross. Plus the UFC audience with Dana white. Plus his cult. He had a lot going for him where he wasn't an underdog like the 2016 election. He simply just had more going on in terms of popularity.

The reason why he lost in 2020 was because of covid, which meant more mail in ballots, which meant more voters who wouldn't have voted before. It also doesn't help that 2020-2024 was not only more expensive, but also had covid. Which means more blame put on Biden. And hey if I was an American who didn't know any better, I would be nostalgic over life before 2020 by voting for that president.

If you think that the reason why a candidate lost primaries, the popular vote, electoral colleges, etc is because of sexism and racism. You are going to be disappointed with the next election

This will be a little bit clunky, but yesterday my friend told me a joke, in finnish: "Whoever wins, the president will be kamala."
The catch is that the word "kamala" itself translates to "horrible/awful" in finnish, which is just unfortunate. That about sums up how I think most people over here feel about the two candidates.

The election itself went pretty much as I expected. I don't live in the US so it wasn't my election, but I did casually follow the situation for a few months and probably will keep following it for a few months afterwards.

As far as the campaining went, I'm a podcast guy and listened to (I think) most of the big ones that came up in the last few weeks. I was disappointed that Kamala didn't show up on any of those. I still can't form an opinion on her because I've never heard her converse. She was also a candidate that didn't win a primary, which just doesn't sit right with me.
I was pleasantly surprised by JD Vance though. I went in thinking he was a meme pick to appeal to young voters, but he seemed like a very level-headed guy with great communication skills.

Going forward, from a european's point of view I'm actually kind of hopeful that Trump's presence will encourage some EU countries to start working harder on their own ****. After Russia occupied Crimea in 2014 I've held the opinion that most of Europe has been living in some pathetic sugar plum fairy dream-world where war is impossible and they can eternally count on the US to take care of all their problems. We should be self-sufficient when it comes to defence, and that would make us better allies as well.
My opinion being such, I really don't mind if Trump's priority is to look out for American interests. I would, in fact, expect that from any American leader. Time will tell it that's actually the case.

EDIT: I should add that the whole post-election hysteria is still as alien to me as it was in 2016 and 2020.

Very disappointing and scary result. Kamala wouldn't have been great, but she would have been a million times better than the modern right-wing controlling most levers of power. I fear for the stability of social rights like gay and interracial marriage, the policy on foreign wars, and a regression in unions and other pro-worker economic policies. I fear for more Trump-appointed supreme court judges who will only skew those decisions even more conservative and dystopian. I also worry for democracy itself, and wonder if we'll even have a free election in 2028 given the Trump administrations stated goals in Project 2025 and the party's obvious disdain for the democratic systems we currently have in place.

The establishment Dems failed miserably to fight against this tide of fascism the past few years. I believe we will get through this, but I also believe these next few years are going to be really scary and turbulent.

well i get to keep my lifelong legitimately my whole life as it started as a joke by my mother when i was a very small child i believe in 1996 OF correctly choosing the winning candidate for every election in my lifetime. i absolutely knew Trump would win and i truly could not understand why anyone thought there was any chance that he would not win or why they figured it would somehow be close even. they screwed up so bad they pretty much handed it to him.

i have seen this repeated so many times in some feminist groups that i am a part of i just feel i should point it out here too. "project 2025" was not written by or endorsed by Trump but a fringe right wing organization called the "heritage foundation" it was written as part of a campaign plan for any republican presidential candidate thay could potentially win the race in 2024.

as far as every attempt to question Trump on the matter he has said he doesnt know about it or what it is about.

that is just to say that "project 2025" is not the sort of thing that is on the front burner or probably a burner at all as of now. the media kept pushing it around as "Trumps project 2025" but it was unconnected to him up to now.

that is not to say there is absolutely no chance that any of what is written in it comes into play at some point but i truly do not think it is something people need to be as worried about as they are as focus should be on more immediate things.

even if it were an issue there are policies in there that would take quite some time to even be able to work their way through the system.

there are more immediate issues then that i would say.

i don't feel like getting into a larger conversation about this, but i'd hardly call the heritage foundation fringe. a number of the writers were members of trump's former, and future cabinet. it was also penned by jd vance, the vp pick. he can say he doesn't know what is is all campaign long, and he was right to, because it made him look terrible. but he absolutely does know, and it is basically the written manifesto of what the upcoming gop wants to do. if they'll actually be able to? who knows, we'll see. but the text doesn't inspire confidence in me about the future of this country.

hell, if anything trump might be one of the few things in the way of project 2025 coming to fruition. i really don't think trump cares a ton about a lot of the proposals, but a president vance might do whatever he's told. we can only wait and see what happens.

anyways, funny purple dragon smilie

well most people refer to it as "fringe" and the truth of the matter is you dont know i do not know that is what the man said. and he isnt really known for "not speaking whatever he wants or believes." the fact of the matter is the media really buffed that up and labeled it incorrectly. as far as we know it is not on his agenda. im aware of the people who wrote it my point was it was not by Trump or his current team. there was a lot of misinformation coming from every direction of this last election. i just pointed the out the facts as they are currently known since i took note of it and i believe there are more immediate things on the table that should be spoken about not necessarily here but i mean in the wider conversation. either way it doesnt matter just threw my two cents in since that is what the topic requested to be spoken about the election and whatnot.

other then a the very few two irl interactions i have had this is probably the most sane response to the election i have seen. i also feel that when you say the post-election stuff hysteria is like what. did not understand it a decade back do not understand it now i have just seen so many unreasonably doomsday interactions it is just too much.
