What do you think about cancel culture? Yes? No? Maybe so?

please cancel cancel culture. it's so ridiculous. anything can be taken the wrong way these days and your entire life will be ruined because of it. half of it isn't even debatable it's just lunacy. one example i can think of is camila cabello getting "cancelled" because they accused one of her backup dancers of wearing blackface when it was a purposely bad spray tan. like what. these people have too much time on their hands. i don't know why it infuriates me so much because it doesn't affect me. but i know if i ever became famous i would lose it all in 20 seconds due to cancel culture

if it’s a reasonable amount of time for someone to actually change its dumb. if it’s someone actively still spewing hateful **** on the daily go for it.

the terminally online takes of “apologies after being called out can’t be sincere they’re just trying to save face” or “even though it’s been literal years or someone was an actual child when they did a bad thing people don’t change and shouldn’t be allowed to grow as a person” are ****ing stupid tho. let ppl learn from their mistakes and grow

I agree with everything the both of you said, but these were the highlights for me.

This band got cancelled once, and I don't even like them, but I feel like they got cancelled for the wrong reasons anyway, so people can't even do that right. Anyway, that's actually besides the point. Despite me not liking them, I have to admit that one of the members posted a pretty good summary of my thoughts on cancel culture, as well. I think the original message was deleted because I can't find it anywhere, but it went something like this:

"Cancel culture is literally so stupid.. a concept built on dragging people down instead of lifting people up. You’ll convince yourself you’re doing a “good thing” by canceling someone else, but really it’s just an excuse for people to be gatekeepers and control freaks. It’s manipulative. don’t get it twisted. pinning a bad reputation on somebody without even understanding the person to me is the same exact thing as the ignorant people in the real world who like the information they were spoon-fed more than the real thing. cancel culture is proof that people want to see other people fail."

Cancel culture doesn't really exist it's just people wanting to hunt others with more success for the sake of their morality. I think it's fine to expose people being horrible people. But if your reasoning to cancel someone is that they're republican it's kinda lame.

People like being morally superior and it's easier to do that now with online anonymity

He said cancel culture doesn't exist, but then went on to list off things describing exactly what cancel culture is.

I think the only one turning this into "keyboard warrior combat" is you because somePerson doesn't really reply to me. I have literally no interest in arguing with you, as I have never had a problem with you before and would like for it to stay that way. I don't know why I need to be attacked for lingering aggression from an argument I had nothing to do with. Bolt is probably going to come and delete all of our messages for this anyway...

Idk it depends on people's definition of it because some people will refer to cancel culture as "let's call out this person for saying something bad 7 years ago" and other people refer to cancel culture as "let's bring up how this person is an actual serial abuser" and it's so inconsistent.

^ Both are people's definition of cancel culture, though. Which, in my personal opinion, is way too broad, and groups in the actual bad people with the people everyone was mentioning before who get cancelled for saying some stupid when they were a kid or a ridiculous misunderstanding, but people who are "into the cancel culture movement" considered all of that to be cancelling regardless.

Victoria Justice said mean things when she was 12? CANCELLED!

Harvey Weinstein is a predator? CANCELLED!

They say it the same way, which I personally think is stupid, but that's how they say it nonetheless. It's part of why I think cancel culture is so stupid, because it just applies to anything and anyone at any given time.

Stop bringing up issues that happened off this topic that are not related to the topic discussion. Take your previous arguments to PM if you must continue it.

Note: This is aimed at everyone.

Cancel culture is a catch all term. There's no real movement of people actively trying to cancel others.

There might not be, but that kind of behavior should probably still have a title, because it is a new "trend" that everybody wants to do now, so we can just call it "cancel culture."

It's not a trend that's recent. People have always been exposing others for doing what they don't believe in. We called people witches because they were lesbians. We kicked king George for taxing tea

But now it has a name, and that's "cancel culture." And people are much more vocal, "trendy," about it now.

People aren't more vocal about cancelling people. It's just that now people are able to have a platform to call out others so it can get picked up. I know its a label I said that. I'm saying it's not a movement of people trying to cancel everybody.
Tbh I think the motivation most of the time for cancelling people is just feeling of moral superiority and getting someone outed

Agree to disagree, then, because so much as it having a name to go by now makes it more vocal, popular, trendy, etc. And people get cancelled over much more trivial things now more than ever, and more frequently.

Most cancel culture is kids trying to see things as problems or adults not raised properly to tell rights from wrongs. I say most is kids, because I see kids doing cork board theories with pins and strings, with no research on the subject at all. Causing a massive situation that draws the attention of other kids spreading around misinfo/disinfo. But also most is kids because some adults well in their 30's that should know better do it too and their behaviors do get idolized by kids. Ye olde monkey see monkey do.

I've seen kids try to call others out despite the following:
  • Invading an adult spaces they shouldn't be in (Like if pornhub was dragged to courtroom because of a 14 year old lying about their age to be on the site. Pornhub would not be in the wrong because they did have the "you need to be 18" disclaimers and all there).
  • Not understanding the legal process of each state or even country when doing such a call out post. As well as their laws.
  • Forgetting crucial information such as screenshots of the supposed predator grooming a minor in dms (Which most people will actually correct because that's super important for all legal reasons. Assuming they have such evidence)
  • Actively crop out evidence to portray the individual as evil. (In the circles I like visiting, this is a often occurrence. Which only hurts victims of actual crimes. Hell you can even look some up with like Spocter Tech and the Chaos55T nonsense. Except the latter is adults... YIKES)
  • Actively edit screenshots or make fake accounts that look point for point another person's account.
  • Actively Doxxing people over their theories on certain kinks Especially when people actively said they don't have that kink at all. (Pedophillia, Zoophilia, and Necrophilia are not kinks. Those are paraphilias by scientific default)
  • Doxxing people over political views that are not really even extreme.
  • Overall lying (Like pick any Hazbin Hotel controversy. It was all people mostly kids being edgy and want to call someone out and were proven to be the case.)
  • Or really just to bring someone down. For **** that they aren't apart of. (iirc that there was a guy supposedly abusive by his ex and it was another when he was asked the other side of things. That honestly should've been in court instead of on twitter of all things)

Cancel Culture does exist to me, but only because of people calling other people out over literally nothing. Like they legit don't have anything going on so they just make **** up. Idfk why that's the usual case and it blows. Especially when a lot of people (myself included. We're all hypocrites one way or another) seem to skip out on actually reading things out. If it's not immature adults with a army of kids. It's a nasty monster hiding their skeletons with such accusations. Regardless, both hurt the actual victims that need help on the evil done unto them and I personally think it's high time to start calling out a ton of lies and fake stuff. I know it's ironic to say because almost everyone that says that ends up being a monster in a closet, but I do think and mean it.

^ You made very good points, Trix, thanks for calling that stuff out. Every individual bullet point is 100% true and further proof of why cancel culture is so stupid. A lot of it is built on lies, misinformation, and quite honestly, grasping at straws.

i think it depends on what you mean by cancel culture. the phrase means different things to different people.

if you mean deplatforming people who've been objectively harmful then yeah let's please. people like rapists/pundits/etc

if you mean ruining someone's life because they like a show or video game you dislike then no wtf are you doing get a life. this is just petty internet drama and if you really want to improve the world around you there's more constructive things to so.

Either one, Thunder, since there are multiple different sides to it, I wanted everyone's thoughts on all parts of it. And I agree with you entirely, too.
