1. Tattered World
   
Honestly, this rating is not for the pets by themselves (I personally find Kith very hard to raise, but I don’t really try to speed through them), but for the NPCs. There’s all sorts of characters—a knight cursed to be immortal but loses his memory ever time he’s killed, an anglerfish-themed mermaid who collects weird trinkets and takes care of all the mermaid babies, a harpy-like creature with a wing prosthetic, a suspicious man who writes fanfiction and his “pet” bunny who tries to keep him from writing it, a Greek magical girl who’s sometimes a magical boy instead (he’s genderfluid), and a robot composed of three AIs who all kinda hate each other.

It’s hard to become “rare”, but really I think the best way to enjoy the game is get a bunch of items and dress your pet up. Dressing ability is unmatched by any other petsite I’ve played, as you can move items freely, even if they’re meant to go a specific place on a pet. I would not recommend interacting with the community as a whole, but definitely check out the Free Adoptions forum.

4. Sylestia
   
A bit grindy of a game, but I like all the variety of pets you can obtain. Very little opportunity to earn the premium currency through gameplay, but you can if you’re active during the events, and it’s not too difficult to buy from others. Community really hates all caps. You can’t really customize a pet you currently have, aside from changing its colors; you have to do breeding projects to get different traits.

5. FelisFire
   
Unlike Sylestia, you can basically change everything about your pets. Plenty of customization options, ”patches” can give exclusive markings that aren’t found naturally, also has items that randomly change certain traits of your cat, which are fun to use. Breeding is a pain if you can’t afford breeding potions, as you have to wait for your cats to reach a like score of 100 with each other, then hope they randomly decide to have kittens. You can technically dress up your cats, but it’s basically impossible because if you want to change the layering of items you have to take everything off and put it back on in the way you want. There’s a premium subscription, but it’s easy to get if you play often because you can buy it with the premium currency, which isn’t too difficult to obtain. Not too much is locked behind premium either.

6. Strudel Cafe
   
Definitely a niche environment; it’s an art-based site, and new “Midveilers” are generally purchased with real money and they’re not too cheap, especially if they’re designed by Loppyrae, the main artist, or that other artist who also works on Dappervolk and whose name I can’t remember. However, it’s getting easier for players who can’t spend money on the site; we’ve had multiple design events (including one going on right now, for one of the rarest species!) and the admins have stated plans to have Make-Your-Own redeemables available for crumbs (the currency) more often. Not sure if this is actually a petsite.

7. Gryffs
   
Beautiful artwork and amazing amounts of customization, but hard to get started. Making money is difficult if you don’t have high-level gryffs for battling. Lack of permanent forums, but talking in site chat can get you gold. Owner seems to forget the site exists sometimes; once an event that was meant to last until the end of February kept on going until April 1st (not complaining; we got free random item bags throughout it). Keep an eye out for billboards that offer free Gryffs or breedings, and if you need help talk to chmbrsplyr.

8. Leayph
   
Made by the same people as Gryffs, it’s far too complicated for me. A lot of “log on every day” for leveling your jobs, and if you decide you want to switch jobs you start that path from the beginning unless you buy a job slot with your experience (which Also takes a lot of “log on every day”!) I’m sure this is meant to be a “trade with your fellow users to get what you need!” but I don’t like that style of gameplay, I like being able to do everything by myself. Recently added a subscription, which seems both useless and locking accessibility behind a paywall at the same time. Not a big fan of the pets.

9. Novilar
   
It exists, I guess. I think it was trying to be a Flight Rising clone with animals instead of dragons, but I don’t find it particularly interesting.

Made by a Karen married to an anti-vaxxer. Thought the site was going to shut down when it all came to a head, but instead the owner briefly came to her senses and gave the site to one of the more decent mods. It’s too early to tell if the site will improve or just get worse. As for the gameplay, I’m not a fan; it incentivizes getting a lot of cats and getting rid of them when they’re too old to breed or fight. Probably the best site for a warrior cats roleplay though. I once accidentally bred a cat with her grandpa and I have never been the same since. Also I have two accounts because someone who was quitting gave me theirs; I wonder if they want it back.

12. Pokefarm Q
    
Gameplay revolves around clicking stuff repeatedly, which isn’t a great start. Admin hates criticism, once went on a rant in the announcements revolving about his marriage issues and why he actually hates the site. (yet it brings in too much money to quit I guess?) One fakemon is literally Angel Dust. Color variants of Pokémon are randomly generated. Very ornery about the use and editing of their sprites, despite the fact their gen 1-5 sprites are ripped from the games. They make you CREDIT MEMES. Only good thing is that you can sell your items for real-life money unlike most petsites, so if you sunk in your time at least you can get something out of it.

my only issue with neopets is the feeding system, you have to feed each neopet one at a time and it's one meal at a time. if they're starving, you have to keep feeding them until they're full. if there was an auto feed, i wouldn't mind.

Just slap 'em in the neolodge, the price is so laughably low that it's easier to plan to starve them (for gourmet foods/stat increases) than to plan to feed.
