As usual, soon all the meals from the tray were gone. It felt good knowing everyone valued your skills so much. Maverick wasn't a fan of cooking, but he learned throughout the years for Angora's sake, who occasionally had to cook for his father's crew and got a severe punishment when they didn't like the results. He was hoping he could give a platter to Veris, but they were all gone. Once Sere himself grabbed a platter, he stayed there, the captain looking as if he was going to give an announcement. He had to stay anyway to collect the platters once they were empty.

Angora ate her meal in peace, trying not to look at Veris. But as she ate, she felt gazes. Was it Veris? Or was it just her imagination? Whatever it was, she wanted to dismiss it as pure paranoia. When she looked at Veris, he seemed focused on the horizon, but she still suspected he was giving occasional glances her way. Unable to put up with the face he made when Maverick entered the main deck with the food, she decided to leave one third of her meal to him.
"Alright, alright Veris. As usual, you got your way. Here. You can have this." Angora said, knowing it was wrong to pamper him, but after so much time, she was too used to it. She threw the food right into Veris' jaws, whose position looked like he was acting as a garbage disposal. One thing was certain. Whatever entered those jaws disappeared as if it never existed in the first place.

Veris' jaws stayed open as the food fell in, snapping shut as soon as it had all entered, never to be seen again. While it wasn't all the food he would've hoped for, he would be happy for what he god. He looked rather content for the moment - he would wait around and see what happened, and be ready to follow any further instruction.

Latnok gratefully took the food from Raclaw, happy to know that the fur dragon understood his tastes well. "Thanks," he said, as he took a few bites of the meat granted to him. "Maverick remembered to give Chester something, right?"
It wouldn't be too long before Sere started calling everyone together for the morning gathering. Latnok would have to finish his food later; for now, he set it aside, heading to the captain's side as he prepared to address the crew. Laszur was already there, nearby; Leoquin would settle somewhere near the back.

Raclaw, Chester, and Risar took their usual spots-- the Minotaur and the owned canines naturally near the captain and the bonded Guardian. It wouldn't be long until the meeting commenced...

Angora took the platter to Maverick's cart and put it there, giving him a small hand wave in farewell. She wanted to be with him, but she didn't like leaving Veris without supervision. Sere was nearby, but he was busy, and the wyvern only obeyed her and his master as far as she knew.
"Looks like your master is about to speak." Angora said to her responsibility, figuring Sere would talk about their next course of action concerning the Ishulgites. There has been no communication attempt from the orb, which gave her a great deal of relief. The relic was very precious to her, and she would've hated to get rid of it.

Maverick took the gathering as an advantage to collect the empty platters sooner. Most of the sailors were quite a rowdy bunch, but at least they were organized when they returned the platters to the cart. Like Angora, Maverick suspected the Ishulgites were the subject of this meeting. He couldn't see Ilasi in the mess beyond him, but he knew she was somewhere out there, likely putting her duties on halt to listen to what the captain had to say. While Maverick hated the idea of confronting that crazy society, he knew they weren't going to give them any other choice. They made it pretty clear that they wanted them dead when they sent that forsaken beast after them, but clearly they haven't created anything worst than that creature... have they?

With enough of the crew assembled, Sere began the morning briefing. "Good morning, sailors!" he called out from his spot on the makeshift platform. "Yesterday was a rather hectic day - but, for the most part, we are here. The enemy sent a great deal against us; but between a risky stratagem, your tenacity, and some quick thinking, we have come out on top. The enemy has sustained heavy losses; losses they will not easily be able to replace. Thus, we must take advantage of this opportunity.
"To that end, we are headed to one of their bases, believed to house a most valuable artifact to them. When we get there, we will need some time to make preparations. The islanders will lead the charge; we will provide support. We have some time, but not forever; make sure you are as prepared as always.
"Good luck, and thank you all for your continued support. You have my word that I will endeavor to get as many of us here back home as possible. I will let you know of any further plans; for now, return to what you were doing. You are dismissed."
The sailors dismissed in their usual noisy manner, some giving a few glances at Veris as they passed by. At the very least, they were more willing to approach Veris than that other monstrosity on board...

Angora was rather shocked on how short the speech was, but it was straight on the point. However, she wasn't a fan of the plan. Sere's plan was literally to walk in the belly of the beast in order to stop the society, and a beast not like the one they defeated yesterday. Retrieve an artifact? Was it the one Julien mentioned? Angora didn't remember the name, which was embarrassing cause she was certain it was mentioned a few times, but she did remember something about it being the thing responsible for the storms that plagued the archipelago. With the crew dismissed, Angora started to wonder who will Sere bring to this deadly mission. Even if it was in a humiliating way, she did help with the monster's defeat yesterday, so she started to fear she would be called. It was possible Veris would have to come too, being the captain's trusted mount. Maverick? Doubtful. Even if he could fight, he might not be the best for the job. Shade? He might've won some points with the old Guardian for his assistance yesterday, but it was no secret he was still being treated indifferently. Since Veris seemed to be so calm, Angora sat on the floor near him to ponder, having too many thoughts in her mind...

Maverick however, wasn't thinking of too much, and while he didn't like the plan either, he knew Sere well enough to know he would go through with such risky plan. With his experience, perhaps it was indeed the best course of action. It was no use just waiting for the enemy to come to them with a new weapon or monster and give them many chances of recuperating. It was better to attack them right at the heart of their base before they themselves came up with a new plan to destroy them. Maverick loathed violence, but as sad as it was, this society was too adamant in their own, cruel plans, to the point where he was almost certain they were irredeemable. Stopping them at any cost was the best they could do if they ever hoped to survive and save the poor people that always fell victims of their sadist ways.

With the sailors dispersing, Sere figured he might as well check on Veris while the wyvern was out. He stepped down from the platform, gently coming over to Veris, who lowered his head.
"Good morning, Veris. You seem to be doing well. How are your wounds?" Sere asked his wyvern after stroking his snout a bit. Veris shifted and turned to show Sere the spot of the worst wound he had taken, which was, for the most part, healed.
"Excellent. Is Angora treating you well? Taking good care of you?" Sere asked, demonstrating his care for his wyvern's well-being.
"Oh yes! Very well! Very well!" Veris said with a nod in his efforts to communicate with Sere. "She should come back with us! Let her stay!"
Unlike Angora or Raclaw (and by extension, Latnok) however, Sere could not understand his own wyvern's verbalizations, and had to rely on the gestures and general feel to understand. "I'm glad you're having a good time, Veris," Sere replied, satisfied. "We will make sure you're well taken care of." Sere lingered a moment in case Angora had anything to say, but would otherwise be leaving.

Angora wasn't expecting Sere to greet his mount when he was usually so busy, but he took the time now that he was already there. Sere clearly didn't understand him... but she did, and was very nervous. She doubted Sere would believe her when she told him her powers have grown enough for her to finally understand his language.
"Sere? I mean, captain, Veris is in good shape. And he's healing very well without my help. I'm impressed. And..." she blushed, which showed even on her ears, still unable to believe Veris would get so used to her to reach this point.
"... I think he wants to tell you something..." Angora finally said, deep inside not wanting Sere to know what his mount was saying. Raclaw and Latnok were nearby, but she didn't think they heard Veris from that distance, even less with the sailors still scattering and some talking among each other.

Maverick had a very different concern, if it could be called that, which was taking all the platters intact. Luckily, the scattering sailors were returning the plates willingly, with little to no movement from his part, and soon, he would be able to take it back to the kitchen for later cleaning. He could see from his spot Sere with Angora and Veris, and couldn't help but smile. He still remembered the time when Angora was very disliked and mistreated by him and Latnok. While he wasn't certain how Latnok was treating her lately, Sere at least seemed to be valuing her work with Veris, and who wouldn't? The wyvern looked so happy with her.

Sere slightly raised an eyebrow at Angora's suggestion. "Really? I'm rather interested to hear what that is, now. What do you have to say, Veris?"
Veris realized that this was the moment he needed! "Angora should stay with us! Please let her stay!" Veris pleased to Sere - but he soon recalled that his vocalizations were inscrutable to his rider. In another attempt, Veris gave Angora a lick in a show of affection before resting his head near her.
Sere was still incapable of understanding his mount. "Eat her? Of course I wouldn't have you eat her," Sere said. "That would just be cruel."
Veris gave a slight head shake, somewhat frustrated that he couldn't communicate his meaning. Maybe someone else could help...

Angora gave a small glare to Veris after licking her, wondering if he knew by now that, while she tolerated it, she didn't like such display of affection. She opened her eyes wide in an almost comical way and almost choked with her own gasp when she heard Sere's interpretation. Did he really believed that was Veris' request? Did he really thought of his mount was that gluttonous? That ungrateful? Why would he do that to someone who has cared for him so well?
"No sir! No. That's... it's not that! I'm sure it's not!" Angora assured firmly, hoping Veris would understand why she was keeping her ability a secret for now.

Certain that the cart had all the platters he served, Maverick went to the hard task of getting it downstairs without breaking a single dish. He didn't know what he would do later given that his navigation job won't be needed for a while. Perhaps he could do the dishes later. Or help his girlfriend? But he didn't have any magic. Or better yet, he could help at the infirmary. Sand Dune, Opium and Random did well by themselves, but maybe they could use the assistance.

Ilasi, in the meantime, had just finished with her daily water purification, and was heading to the infirmary herself, to begin taking inventory of the supplies. At the very least, there wouldn't be any particularly dangerous fighting today; perhaps there would be some time to settle down after all of her tasks were done.
She soon arrived, opening the door to see the usual three helpers assisting in attending the wounded. "Good morning," she greeted the three. "How have you all been managing?"

Sere gave a quick sigh - but recalled that there was someone who would be suited for the job. Raclaw - and, by extension, Latnok.
"Hey, Latnok," Sere called out, waving to get his attention. "Come over here for a bit." Latnok obeyed, putting his food down before coming over as requested.
"Godfather Sere. How can I help you?" Latnok asked.
"I understand that you and Raclaw can understand Veris. Help me understand what he is saying," Sere requested.
"Okay, sure thing," Latnok said, listening attentively as he prepared for Veris to speak.
"Okay, Veris. Go ahead."
Veris wasted no time, happy to know that someone would be able to help him communicate. "Angora! Please let her stay with us!" he besought his rider. "She is my friend!"
Though Latnok didn't know if Veris was being bribed with food to make such a request, he would let Sere use his own judgment, especially since he knew his own wyvern a lot better. "He's asking for Angora to stay with us. Guessing he wants the current arrangement to be a little more permanent."
"Hmm..." Sere wasn't expecting such a request at a time like this. One thing was certain - if Veris was making such a request, he was, at the very least, being taken care of well. He would need to spend a few moments to think, at least...

Angora pretended she didn't understand his words, and looked at Veris to plead him to not say anything about her new ability for the time being. She didn't think Latnok and Sere were ready to know it, nor she wanted to risk them not believing her and being seen as a liar or someone seeking attention. Sere's silent indicated that he was thinking it and not immediately taking the wyvern's request.
"I... guess I overdid it?" she commented awkwardly, knowing by now that she had it coming. She went out of her way to make sure Veris was well taken care of and happy, too much in fact, and wanting to go the extra mile to please him, it lead to this consecuence. It was nice to know that Veris liked her that much, but serving him for eternity wasn't exactly the kind of life she was imagining...

"Oh hello beautiful lady! So nice of you to grace us with your presence today." Opium greeted, receiving a spank on the back of his head from Sand Dune.
"Knock it off man. If Maverick saw you, the poor lad would be jealous." Sand Dune commented, with Opium spanking him back.
"This is just good manners, not flirting!" he defended himself, the two of them almost looking like they were rightly, but they were actually sparring playfully. Random rolled his finger at the side of his head and pointed at the two while looking at Ilasi, telling her in his mute way how crazy those two were.

Ilasi let out a small giggle, flattered by the compliment at the very least, though questioning how much Maverick would approve of such a thing. She would take it for what it seemed - a kind comment.
"Well, I'll probably be here for awhile. I eed to take inventory of what we have, and see what medicines the patients need. I really appreciate all the help - who knows how busy I would be without you three helping out." Indeed, Ilasi wondered if she would ever be able to catch a break without the extra hands.

Veris gave a big grin to his rider, as Sere thought of how to proceed. At the very least, Angora was doing her job well enough, if Veris wanted to keep her around - though such a thing would undoubtedly involve complications. "I will not be able to come to a decision on the matter just yet," Sere answered. "We would need to have her on board for a bit longer after all of the recent events to establish a good baseline of rapport. Once I feel comfortable with that, we would need to sort out the details of such an arrangement - and from there, we might find something that works. Does that sound good, Veris?"
Veris, though somewhat disappointed, maintained a hopeful expression. "Yes," he responded simply, and Latnok translated.

Angora didn't know how to feel about Sere's comment. A good baseline? She didn't quite get what that meant, but she figured it had to do with how well she would manage inside Guardian headquarters. She looked at Veris after Sere gave him a reply, and while he looked rather disappointed, he didn't seem angry. One thing that worried her though was that Sere didn't immediately said no, which meant he was considering the decision. It was his mount's happiness what was on the line, so of course he would consider it. While Angora was very worried, at least they got out of this step, although she dreaded to think how the wyvern would react if Sere said no, or even worst, if he agreed and she would have to spend who knows how long taking care of him.

"It's nothing miss. We rather be overworked here than back in the brig. And it's all worth it if it means helping you." Sand Dune said kindly, with Random soon after giving her an inventory of the medicine they were missing or running low of. Despite all the battles, the list wasn't long.

Ilasi gratefully received the list, giving it a quick review. "Well, this doesn't seem too bad," she noted as she went down the items. "I should have what I need to make us enough of these to keep us going for a bit. Thank you once again - you make my life easier." Ilasi just needed some space to start producing some of the medicines now - that part was something she was very familiar with, however, and it didn't give her a hard time. Usually, the harder part was identifying what kind of medicine someone needed.

Sere saw that Veris wasn't too pleased with the news, so figured he would at least help his wyvern feel a bit better. "Not to worry, Veris - if everything works out just fine, then we would be glad to have her along. We just need to do this the right way. Does that sound good?"
Veris smiled and nodded. Sere's words gave him hope that things would work out in the end. He just needed to hope that Angora didn't get herself into any more trouble, for his sake.

The three men were glad to help. Having realized the infirmary lacked the necessary assistance, and having some healing knowledge themselves, that was the job they chose, and they couldn't be happier being graced with the presence of a literal mermaid. That Maverick was truly one lucky fellow.

Angora nodded to Sere in farewell, waiting for him and the traducers to leave and be at some distance before she addressed to Veris.
"My, you really are one stubborn boy, aren't you?" she said with a raised eyebrow, now convinced Sere would do anything in his power to keep him happy, otherwise he wouldn't have made that hopeful comment. She had no idea what was running though Sere's mind right now, but even if he was telling the truth and found a way to keep her for his sake, it was going to be a difficult road for her. She knew it. That was assuming the Ishulgites didn't get her first.

Mischief's claws twitched in anticipation as she quietly approached the captain. "Captain. I have something I need to speak to you about... I have a way to improve our odds of victory against the Ishulgites, if you're willing to lend your magickal expertise." She drew out her book and paused to take a deep breath for her explanation. She awaited the Captain's response.

Darkheart stared at the ocean for now, quietly processing everything that had happened lately.

Meanwhile in the kitchen, Maverick decided to do the dishes now that he was already there. But he hated doing it, so he only did half of them. He was going to wash the rest later or wait for someone else to do it. It was then that in his effort to feed everyone, he forgot to eat himself. He prepared himself a simple breakfast, and decided to eat it in Ilasi's comfortable room. As he exited the kitchen, he encountered a familiar face.
"Oh heya Maverick. Nice job with the food as always." the sailor said. It was the same man who was eaten by a tonguean once. He was supporting himself with a cane, having been victim of the latest Ishiud attack.
"Hola amigo. Where are you going?" Maverick asked, rather sorry to see him that way.
"Just doing the dishes of course. Or did you think they were being done by themselves?" the man said, almost making fun of him.
"You? But... like that? No offense." he replied.
"Oh don't worry about me mate. I can still walk. The cane just helps me not to limp." the man explained.
"Oh. Well... just so you know, I did half the dishes already. So..." Maverick started to say, with the man nodding in agreement. Doing the dishes distracted him, but he didn't mind having half of the work done.
"It's alright matey. Thank you. Enjoy your meal. And don't worry. I'll let the kitchen impeccable for when you cook again." he promised, with Maverick wondering if he should help. The man wondered himself something; how come Maverick only did breakfasts? He wished he could do lunch or dinner from time to time too, but he figured that cooking for those many people was exhausting. Besides, as far as he knew, navigation was his main job, so he imagined cooking was just voluntary work.

After seeing the man do quite well by himself, Maverick headed to Ilasi's room to eat in peace. He felt so sorry for his friend. First devoured by that scaly beast and barely making it out alive by pure chance thanks to Shade, and now victim of yesterday's attack. In the few times Maverick has seen him, he was always doing something. Maverick suspected it was to distract his mind of all the things that have happened to him ever since entering the ship. But despite his traumatic experiences, he was always seen in a good mood. Very pleasant man to talk to indeed. Maverick was going to be sad when it's time to part ways. He hasn't befriended many people there, but he has earned everyone's respect, and despite this voyage never having been in his plans and despite all the hard times and dangers, it has been nice in the long run.

"Really? Let's hear it, then," Sere said, as he prepared to analyze whatever suggestion Mischief had. Far be it for him to turn down any suggestions; if Mischief had some tool or idea he hadn't accounted for yet, perhaps it could serve in at least some small capacity.

Veris gave a sly smile to Angora's (potentially rhetorical) question. "You can stay. I know it! My human will let you stay. I just had to ask. My human will take care of me! So he will let you stay!" Veris' confidence in the matter was unshakable, seemingly having the utmost trust in Sere to look out for his best interests.

Angora gave a small smile, but only to hide her concern on the matter. How could she tell Veris she wasn't looking forward to come like he was? She adored that wyvern, but couldn't visualize herself taking care of him for the rest of her life. She would have to keep the feeling for herself to avoid offending him. How come she became from being an unwanted troll, not loved by anybody, not even her own parents, to having others wanting her in their lives? First a human (mostly), and then dragons, a species she once hated. And not just one, but two of them. She wasn't sure about Maverick, but she firmly believed Shade wasn't going to like this.
"Well, remember it's not one hundred percent certain yet. And first things first. We need to do something about the crazy people who sent that beast yesterday." Angora said, trying to change the subject. She didn't know if Shade would remain in Redwater for a while due to his crime or somehow pardoned and have his family and freedom back, but whatever the scenario, he wasn't going to agree with her going to Veris and not him. Maverick had Ilasi, but it was possible he wasn't going to be too fond of the plan either. It was such an uncomfortable predicament, and there was still the Ishulhite threat looming, which was something Angora couldn't forget about either, even if the orb was out of their reach now. She knew they would be out to get her after rejecting their offer, so it was two predicaments she had to worry about.

Mischief opened her notebook. "I have a specific ritual written in here. One to allow the creation of a golem. The physical ingredients are the simple part. I can ensure we get what we need, but even for as powerful as my magick is, I don't have the might to animate it alone. That's why I want your help. I feel a golem would make a fantastic ally. With Latnok tending to Sere's request-- Raclaw, naturally, wasn't too far away and could read every interpretation that resulted from the use of their now shared powers. Veris apparently wanted Angora to stay with him.. forever. He could somewhat understand the Wyvern's feelings; he had formed a bond himself with Latnok and had remembered just how 'lost' he had felt without someone who had effectively become his human. Angora had been taking care of Veris for some time now, so such a bond was only naturally and even more with the slightly less sentient dragon counterpart ala Wyvern. Still-- Latnok had grown attached to him and wouldn't give him up for the world, but Angora? Angora seemed reluctant at times and seemed split between Veris and the currently prisoner Shade. Plus, there was also Maverick and now Mischief. Would she want to separate from them? And would they be willing to follow her back to the Guardian base? He couldn't answer that question for any of them, but could tell that *Veris* had clearly made up his mind on the subject.

It had been some time since Sere had dealt with a golem before, and though he understood the basic principle of how they worked, he had never constructed one himself. Nevertheless, such a thing would undoubtedly prove useful.
"If it helps keep us alive on the battlefield, then it's certainly worth building," Sere said, giving his approval to the project. "What are the ingredients involved?" Hopefully, gathering the ingredients would be as simple as Mischief believed they would be - ideally, such a project would be doable before the currently scheduled assault.

Mischief smiled. "I appreciate the support. I have the magickal reagents on hand, all we need are the materials for the body. Namely, clay and rocks. We do need to be careful. The materials cannot have been tainted by bloodshed or vile powers. Some know how to purify such areas, but I'm no cleric. I can ensure the materials are good, and when it's gathered I can form the golem's body. At that point I'll need your help to awaken it. Once it's done, it will be a physically powerful ally resistant to most magick... Which is exactly why we can't afford to not check our materials. I appreciate the assistance, Captain." She bows respectfully. She restrained a giddy excitement, reviewing her notes and reassuring herself she had the necessary herbs and oils.

At Ilasi's cabin, Maverick was eating his breakfast. It was so quiet and peaceful, and the room always smelled nice. It was safe to assume that was his cabin too, and his old cabin belonged to Angora and Mischief. But it was a rather poor one, so maybe later in the day, he could suggest to the captain to move them in a better place. Yeah. That was a good idea. Now he had something to do later in the day. For now, he focused on eating so he could help in the infirmary. If the society attacked them again, the injured sailors had to recover as fast as they could to be able to defend themselves...

The materials seemed simple enough - at least from the description Sere had. "Well, I think 'vile' is a matter of perspective... but I don't see most of the islands here as places plagued with conflict. I think we should have a reasonably easy time finding the supplies necessary. We also have Leoquin to dive for the supplies if need be."
From there, Sere produced a notebook from his pack and began some rudimentary drawings. "Now, if we're going to do this, we'll need to sort out matters of proportions, and how we'll be channeling the energy into the golem. We will likely want a place which denies the enemy a chance to interfere with the creation of the golem. I don't know how many artisans we have on board, but the actual physical structure should be manageable..." As Sere spoke, he grew increasingly interested in the project. It all seemed to come together in his head - they just needed to get their hands on the materials and begin working out any kinks from there.

After Angora made the comment to Veris, she didn't need a reply for him to know that if the society attacked her in particular, he would come to her defense. She had to make sure that didn't happen of course. After talking, the troll watched Mischief talking to Sere. Nothing indicated an argument, which made her quite happy. She knew Mischief didn't get along with Latnok at all, so it was great to see she at least could cold a calm conversation with the leader. Sere could be as cruel, maybe even worse, but he could be reasonable when someone knocked some sense into him, somthing she wished Raclaw could do with Latnok. He hasn't been mean to her lately, but that's because they haven't interacted so much in a while.

The three former pirates continued being helpful to Ilasi, and Random, being the biggest and strongest, would do the heavier work. They really enjoyed the mermaid's company, and it was incredible that in their days as pirates, they never managed to see one until now. Or maybe they have and were disguised as humans? One thing was certain; they were amazing. Ilasi was beyond beautiful, and Leoquin looked strong and healthy. Quite the interesting society if they were all like those two.

Throughout her work with them, there had been one question Ilasi had been meaning to ask the former pirates. She knew Maverick didn't like speaking about his former background as a pirate; yet, she was wondering what others thought about their own experience.
"So what was it like for you three before you... well, before you started working for us?" she asked cautiously. "I heard the story about Henry... was that sort of mistreatment the norm there? What brought you to such a life? Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean... I... nevermind. Forget I asked, please..." Her question had come off much more judging than she had originally intended. She just wished she never thought of asking such a thing just then...

Unlike Maverick, the three men didn't mind talking about their past lives, even if it wasn't something they exactly wanted to remember.
"Not to worry miss. Not everyone has the life they would've wished for. Tough times in ours, so we regrettably got into that line of work... if it can even be called that." Sand Dune explained kindly, finding peculiar how Ilasi would be curious about something like that.
"We ditched our old names and we adopted the ones you know us as. Not the best names, but we like them. I came from an old desert town which had a peculiar sand dune on the horizon, so I called myself that in order to remember my old home. I was quite the adventurous lad, and having been surrounded by sand, I wondered how life at sea would be like, and before I knew it, I became a pirate. Not my proudest decision of course." Sand Dune explained, only giving her the loose version of the story, though he could enter in detail if Ilasi wished.

With Sand Dune done talking, it was Opium's turn.
"Not much from my end miss. I was a very naive boy. I use to read these stories about a pirate who used his position to fool bad guys and help the innocents. I didn't like my father's business, so I ran away in order to become like my hero. But of course, I needed a reality check, and well, the rest is history." Opium said, being even more brief than Sand Dune. He thought his life has been boring, so he didn't bother Ilasi with too much of it.

Random couldn't talk, so he decided to let his companions do the talking, whatever little they knew of him.
"Random here... well, let's just say he's had it the hardest. He hasn't told us much about his past life, but he did enter the life of piracy to win a lot of money. He was a single father. His son you see, was very ill. And... well you can figure the rest." Sand Dune explained, Opium giving his mute friend a small pat to the shoulder. That was years ago, but it didn't stop from being painful.
"He lost his voice in a deadly pirate battle, so he had to learn sign language to communicate with us." Opium then added, trying to change the subject to drift away from the memory.

Ilasi listened to the stories, rather surprised by what she had heard. She wasn't expecting anyone to be driven to the profession by the idea of adventure, and wondered how such a barbaric practice could be romanticized. Random's story, however, was rather depressing, and made her regret even bringing up the subject. A man driven to what he did by great need... and it didn't work out well in the end. She wished there was something she could do - but what was done was done.
"Uh... well... that all sounds very, uh... well, not quite what I was expecting," Ilasi admitted. "I'm sorry that things ended up for you like that, Random... the least we can do now is look towards the future." Now wasn't the time to criticize these men for poor choices, when they were trying to make up for said choices, and she really couldn't think of much to say about Random's situation without potentially aggravating any negative feelings he had about it. She wondered how many criminals eventually brought to justice in Aelinon were men like Random, who were pushed to execute drastic measures in order to survive, and earned nothing but death after the misery they caused to achieve such a thing.
"Well, uh, on a different note, what are you all planning to do once we're done here?" Ilasi asked, wanting to shift the subject from the more somber matter.

Random smiled at Ilasi when she did her comment, most of the pain already gone and living his life the best he could without looking back. Sand Dune turned to answer that question.
"You know, we've never actually thought about that. We've been on this voyage for a while now we haven't thought that up ahead." he expressed, talking for his friends too who were in the same predicament.
"Maybe we'll get jobs at a hospital? Not Random though. He has always dreamed for a quiet life on the countryside, maybe a farm with many cute animals." Random glared at him, though in a rather playful way.

Then Opium talked.
"It won't be hard to adapt to a new life. We didn't like the pirate life anyway, and if we're lucky, there won't be any bounty on us." he hoped, knowing the penalty for being a pirate in many places was very severe.
"In the times we went to land, there were many wanted posters of our captain and some of our companions, but not us. And hopefully it has stayed that way. We were never the violent type, nor the stealing type of course, so whenever we plundered a place, we made sure we've stayed as far away from the action as possible." he assured, their jobs not involving much of the violent parts, even though the captain always wanted everyone to participate.

Veris gave a low growl at the mention of the 'crazy people.' "Those people... they make the big bug things? Nasty creatures - hard to hurt without my human when they are alive... but they are good food when dead. You should try some! I don't know why others don't eat them. They are good food." The concept of other organisms not being able to eat such a wide array of things was still not something Veris was fully familiar with - his experience with food being mostly informed by what he himself ate.

Ilasi found it hard to imagine a man like Random having the company of cute animals - like Chester? On a farm, it would probably be more like pigs and sheep. Still, a hardened man surrounded by piglets and lambs... the thought alone was enough to make Ilasi smile.
"Well, individual members of a pirate crew usually aren't bountied," Ilasi noted, thinking of all of the bounty posters she'd come across. "It tends to be the more infamous pirate captains, or occasionally a known fugitive who eventually picked up piracy. Most members of a pirate crew aren't going to be tracked down outside of any initial assault on a ship, so long as they aren't readily identifiable as pirates. I'm sure you will all do just fine. Hey, with some nice clothes, and-"
Ilasi was interrupted by Leoquin's entrance into the infirmary. The reason for his visit was apparent enough at first glance. She grabbed some of her anti-inflammatory medicine from a cabinet before coming over.
"Leoquin! Sit down, let me take care of that arm." Leoquin complied, becoming as comfortably seated as he could as Ilasi began her work applying medicine to the site. "Tell me, Leoquin, do you feel sick? A fever? Nausea of any sort? Numbness?"
"Oh, none of that," Leoquin said. "Just pain. A real bad cut, that's all. Probably too big to get any meaningful amount of venom in, if there was any involved." Though he didn't immediately consider it because of the adrenaline rush during the fight, the wound was pretty bad-looking. One close call after another...

As much as the three men enjoyed their conversation with Ilasi, it was time for duty. They were relieved with what she said. Perhaps there was a chance for them to have some peace without being worried about being pursued for their crimes. Random got some antibiotics for Ilasi to work with, while Opium got some anti venom after what Leoquin said. Sand Dune in the meantime, took the bandages.
"So what's the story behind this mate? Don't tell me those bugs have returned?" Sand Dune asked, rather worried, but he didn't hear any commotion upstairs like last time, so the wound had to be the result of something else.

Angora rolled her eyes at Veris' comment, though not at all surprised by it.
"Heh, I don't know how you can think about food so often. You may like the taste of those things, but not everyone has a strong stomach. I eat many things... but insects are... I don't know, just not my thing." Angora commented rather casually, still having an admiration for insects, just not those. She could swear that if Veris kept thinking about food the way he did, he would end up eating his own tail. Probably never going to happen, but she sometimes thought it could.

"Oh, none of that," Leoquin answered, trying not to flinch as the medicine was applied. "Just... had some more important things to deal with, that's all." Leoquin generally preferred to wait before seeing if he needed the help of others - and a less-than-friendly encounter with Ilasi some time ago still lingered in his mind, though he would never admit to such a thing being a factor in his hesitation.
"More important? That could've turned gangrenous if you waited too long," Ilasi cautioned. "You should've been here as soon as possible for a wound like that."
"Eh, other folks have it worse, and I still have a job to do," Leoquin said nonchalantly, putting his arm down once Ilasi was done with it. "Better to see if it heals instead of wasting time. I know you're busy with Ma- ...with other matters right now."
Ilasi doubted that Leoquin would take her words to heart, but wouldn't press any further. She didn't want to come off as too pushy, and potentially drive him away from seeking further help if he needed it.

Sand Dune and Opium stayed out of their conversation, but Random wasn't liking the way Leoquin was treating Ilasi. He spoke with sign language and asked Sand Dune to traduce honestly.
"Random believes you shouldn't be too hasty and hostile. If you keep it up, you may need an amputation someday." he traduced, knowing that what Random indirectly meant was that he shouldn't be treating Ilasi that way. Funny how life could be. Leoquin and Ilasi were the only merfolks on the ship, so naturally, anyone would've believed they would've chosen each other. Yet Ilasi chose Maverick, a hybrid no less. Though it wasn't being a surprise to any of them anymore. Leoquin was indeed a bit of a jerk, and could now tell why Angora didn't like him.

All the talk about food made Angora rather nauseous. Just thinking about how much Veris ate was enough to make her stomach turn. Trolls were gluttonous by nature as well, but over the years she has learned to have a much controlled appetite, as long as she received the nutrients necessary for the stoic troll body.
"But enough about those things. You go ahead and stretch your body. I would fly with you, but you already did yesterday. And of course, you still have those injuries that need healing. Plus... I don't like this place very much. There could be more dangers out there, so keep the exercise right here on the main deck, alright?" Angora suggested to Veris, knowing it wouldn't be the same as flying, but it would have to do for now. As she waited to see if Veris would have something to say on the matter, she glanced at Raclaw. It was almost a pleading look. As usual, Latnok was nearby. Those two were always very close to each other and she didn't like it... but Angora... she needed something from Raclaw...

Leoquin gave a scoff at the the translation of the comment from Random. "Okay, Mr. Mime. Are you trying to criticize me? You, who chose the life of robbing, capturing, and murdering innocent people? Your buddies would've turned that town into a bloodier mess than a quarantined ship full of people with dysentery. You're lucky we're the ones who put an end to your band, and not my fellow mermen who'd have given you a slow, painful public execution. I've made mistakes before - and I've given every moment of my life to fixing one of them. I'd take an amputation if it meant I wasn't screwing anyone else over. Unlike you, I actually care about other people."
Leoquin hated the irony of the situation. Such merciless things only had to do enough to get by now, while he had to give his all in every aspect of his life since the day he lost his brother for just the faint hope that maybe, just maybe, he could set things right...

It didn't take a telepath to tell that Angora wanted to talk to him-- and that the traumatized troll was still anxious about potentially having to interact with Latnok in order to do so. Such things would eventually become unavoidable, seeing as Latnok was and would forever be his legal owner as well as his own best friend. Still; he would what he could for now in hopes of eventually *fully* restoring the the Troll's relationship with the beloved Guardian. "I'll be back.," the Fur Dragon gently spoke into Latnok's mind he made a couple slight gestures and made his way over to Angora. "I can tell you want to speak to me-- what is it?," he then spoke in a gentle and concerned tone. Chester stayed behind with Latnok, obeying the silent command not to follow.

Elsewhere on deck, Risar kept an eye on things and stayed mentally prepared for things to come.

Angora didn't like that Raclaw made the comment so close to Veris. She didn't want him to know she wanted to talk to him, even less know what the subject was about.
"Good afternoon Raclaw. Do what do I owe the miracle of your approach?" Angora commented, pretending that Raclaw's assumption was wrong and that her glance was just a simple one. But she did indicated with her eyes that she didn't want them to talk with Veris or Latnok so close.

At Ilasi's cabin, Maverick was already done with his breakfast. Despite having wanted to go to the infirmary, while he ate, he distracted himself with the book Sere gave him shortly after the battle with Darkmatter. He never stopped to read it so thoroughly until today. It was all so interesting, and wondered why he didn't read it before. On it there was the once torn page that gave information about the behemoth, a page he once gave to Angora so she could battle such beast. He had taped it back to place after the troll returned it. Seeing it only reminded him of the time he missed her battle. He really had thought she was going to die, but now he regretted not being there to give her his support, and to see her triumph and watch a whole city pardoning her life. Her, a troll. He had no doubts Angora made history that day, a moment he missed cause he has been too much of a coward to have faith in his little friend.

Sand Dune and Opium said nothing, having gotten used to insults, but Random believed Leoquin could use a good punch to the face. There no doubt about it now. Angora didn't like that merman, and now he has made it more than clear why Ilasi chose the sweet Maverick over this creep. After a glance from Sand Dune, Random calmed down, and decided to just ignore him. However he did that wound, he deserved it. He wouldn't be surprised if someone or something did that to him after getting too macho with them too. While Sand Dune remained calm, Opium was rather upset, even if he didn't show it. One would think the merman would be more respectful and grateful to the people helping him, but instead, Leoquin chose to insult the ones assisting him, and on top of that, judge them without even knowing why they were in that position in the first place. They were going to keep treating him like any other patient, but the three former pirates were determined to not let his world sting, and let the buffoon release all the hot air he clearly had.

"Just-- wanted to talk. You did well out there yesterday.," Raclaw responded with a mostly convincing smile. The Fur Dragon quickly read Angora's eyes and gently began to walk away from the others, the Troll presumily knowing to follow and perhaps provide a light response until they reached their desired distance. Chester, meanwhile, briefly looked up at the sky and wondered if he would ever get a chance to ride again presumably after the pet-turned-mount had more of a break after carrying their beloved master.

Leoquin was silent for a bit of time as his wound was treated further. These men were helping him out - but for what? So they could prove themselves useful, worthy of still being alive after they chose evil.
"My brother... he didn't deserve what happened to him. Yet he's gone... and the only thing I can do is hope everything I've done will eventually lead to me finding him. A moment of stupidity as children - and we still have to pay the price. I give my all to try to get my family back together, I give my full devotion to doing my best to serve my fellow people, and whoever else is relying on me. I know what it's like to fail people who relied on you - and that is something that will never happen to me again. But there are those who don't care about any of that. Those who only care to serve themselves... those who have no sense of loyalty to anything except what immediately benefits them. And somehow these people deserve a chance after what they've done, when their victims certainly didn't get one. Somehow these people still deserve to reap the rewards of the loyalty they only nominally offer.
"And we're just supposed to accept that. I'm just supposed to accept that these people are on my side when they don't care about the things I do. And I don't have a choice in the matter. I will accept it - I don't have to like it, though. I'll treat the help from those people like what it is - the actions of an ally, not a friend."
Ilasi did her best to avoid eye contact with Leoquin at that point. wish she had words for Leoquin at the moment, but it would seem that he had never verbalized just how strongly he felt about certain things, and she was unaware of what she could say to make things better. He had called her treasonous before, but what she had initially figured was an angry outburst seemed to be related to a deep-seated part of his worldview. She wanted nothing more than to get along with everyone, and she wished that Leoquin would open up more - but how could she convince him to at this point? His attitude had potential to be self-destructive, as his wound showed - how could she convince him that others did indeed have his own best interests at heart? And how could she get him to see that some people just needed a chance?

As Latnok waited for Raclaw to come back, he sat down on the deck, inviting Chester into his lap for some petting and scratching behind the ears. He never really had a chance to appreciate anything like it - stress was pretty endemic to his situation, to the point where Latnok forgot what it was like to not feel it, yet having Chester around was such great stress relief that he had to appreciate it. How could simply being with a dog feel so good?

The three men listened intently to his story, and they knew immediately he was indirectly referring to them, but Sand Dune, being the most calm and rational of the three, was the one who did the talking.
"Well, why do you think people don't care? Why do you always assume everyone works for their own benefit instead of genuinely helping? Perhaps if people don't care... is because you haven't given them a reason to. You can't go through life assuming the worst in everyone, giving them unpleasant nicknames and making assumptions about their motivation without even knowing that person." Sand Dune said calmly, having disliked the way he addressed to Random.

"Not everyone makes the best decisions, but if they happen, it happens. What's done is done, and all you can do is hope for a second chance, and seize it as soon as you're facing it. And also try to be nice and befriend people so you won't have to be alone in the ordeal. Nobody is going to want to be around somebody who treats them hostile even when all they are doing is helping and being nice." Sand Dune then said, trying to give him some friendly advice, even though Leoquin seemed like the proud type and was probably not going to like it. He could understand he was going through some hard times, but taking out his frustration on practically everyone he met, even on the gentle soul that was Ilasi, he was always going to be alone.

Angora looked at Veris, making sure he wasn't being jealous.
"Oooh, see that Veris? He's going to congratulate me. I'll be right back. Going out with him. Now please behave yourself. Stretch your wings. Walk around for a while, but don't leave the main deck, ok?" Angora instructed, trusting the wyvern wouldn't get into trouble if she left him without supervision for a brief moment and glad Raclaw could drift away from the initial thought by congratulating her. She was certain Veris would ask him about what they would talk about right now, and Angora wanted to leave him out of it. There was Latnok and the sailors around, who could keep an eye on Veris just in case, though thankfully, he seemed more interested in taking up the warm rays of the sun.

Having given the order and taking advantage of the miracle that was Latnok not intercepting his friend for talking to her, Angora followed Raclaw, heading to the front of the ship. Many sailors usually concentrated in the center or the back, so the place was quite isolated.
"Well now, heh, what do you think? First that battle yesterday, and now Veris throws that bomb at his master..." Angora commented, still believing Veris would be angry about the situation, but why would he? All she did was do a good job. Too good unfortunately. And it lead to that new predicament.

"I know.. I heard every word. He really does seem quite fond of you; and perhaps too much so.," Raclaw said with what seemed like a concerned tone. Ironically, the Fur Dragon's initial line about being 'quite fond' was almost identical to that which was once said to Latnok via Damon's own words about himself. That had been before the voyage even and now someone who was once *only* his best friend was now also his legal guardian and caretaker. "I don't know rather or not you plan to accept Veris' proposal of you staying with him, but consider your options carefully. Latnok and I-- we are for life or until he chooses to release me. I chose him, but he controls that contract. I.. I trust him, but more importantly he trusts me and he wants me. I sense that you do not feel the same about Veris and if that is the case-- you need to say something. Veris. He needs to hear it directly from you; he deserves that much. And you need to tell Godfather Sere before Veris receives any more false hope about your staying. You can't make a decision you won't be happy with. If I had chosen the wrong owner or if Julian had chosen the wrong family for me-- my circumstances and my happiness could've been very very different. Trust me, you need to act on this. Your happiness is more important than anything else in your life.," the Fur Dragon then said comparing his own collar/circumstances to Veris' own status and desires. He spoke in a stern-but-concerned tone, almost as if he were an concerned parent or instructor worried about their student. And perhaps he almost was, serving as a living example of one who had willingly-- and happily --given themselves up.

Angora didn't receive the comment she was hoping for. What's more, she hated how obvious it was to Raclaw that deep inside, she didn't want to do this.
"No. No no no no. I won't tell Veris such a thing! How can it occurs to you? I do care for him, and news like that would devastate him. You should've seen how angry he was when I told him when our moments together won't be forever." Angora said, trying not to make Raclaw believe it was her the one who didn't want to make his request. If Latnok could hear the conversation through him, she didn't want to risk him telling the wyvern about her not wanting to go with him. While she didn't want to believe the wyvern would hurt her if she didn't go with him, he could nevertheless be very angry, maybe even go as far as to renounce the friendship that has helped her so much in a time where it seemed everyone was against her.

The troll pondered a lot, telling Raclaw to give her a moment to think. She then spoke again.
"Listen, I know Sere doesn't really wants me to come, but I know he will want his mount happy, so I'm certain he will do anything to make sure he has me..." Angora said rather gloomily, feeling like she was trapped. Even if they survived the remaining Ishulgite attacks, she was going to face the possibility of eternal servitude once they reached the main land.

After another brief pause, she finally asked for the favor.
"I don't want to involve you Raclaw, but... I need your help. I want you... to talk to Veris. Not right now of course. Wait for a few days if necessary. I don't want him to suspect this conversation had something to do with it. Talk to him, like a friend. Ask him... how would he feel if Sere says no to his request. And also... how would he feel if I didn't want to go. Just curiosity of course. Don't you think for a moment I don't want to. Don't give him the wrong impression. Just ask him in a casual way. I'm curious about his reaction is all." Angora stated vehemently, once again not wanting Raclaw or Veris to believe she didn't want to come. But also not let Latnok to believe it either just in case he was listening or interrogated Raclaw on the matter. But whatever the answer, she was certain the wyvern would have his way, one way or another...

Raclaw listened carefully although he could also sense Angora's distress at his so easily being able to read here-- not entirely unexpected although he at times couldn't help it. Even if he wasn't already a telepath, he would still have his canine senses which included the ability to read people. "I-- I will do what I can.," he finally responded in a gentle-and-somewhat-calming tone. Keeping people calm-- another Canine ability.

Angora scratched her head, feeling so embarrased to make such an awful request to him. This wasn't his problem, so Angora felt quite guilty for involving the fur dragon. But from the few that understood the wyvern's language, Raclaw was her best bet. Only he could help her. Shade didn't know about this, so he couldn't be the one involved. And obviously, she didn't trust Latnok with such delicate issue.
"Thank you... Raclaw. Really." she said with a bit of shame, hating the situation. Not only did it came in the middle of a war with the Ishulgites, but this was something that involved her very future. She didn't know what would happen to Shade, but if Maverick went his separate ways, she still wished she could see him from time to time. And of course there was Mischief. Just what was the deal anyway? She wasn't exactly the most likable individual on the planet, yet she had plenty who wanted to be with her, a troll on top of that, one of the most despised creatures ever.

"You're very welcome.," Raclaw simply said with a gentle smile. No matter how Latnok felt about her-- he liked her and the two had at least shown some progress in that department. He soon chose to change the subject, perhaps for his own sake or for Angora's. "So you and Mischief-- you seem to be making new friends and new roommates.," he then said somewhat aware of the situation through Chester and casual observations.

It was notable that Mischief was an Pokémon and that Angora still had the modified Poke(dex?) from the previous Star. A (living?) device to recognize creatures from that seemingly unique world; it was a curious thing and part of Raclaw wondered what sort of relationships they and their human(oid) counterparts had. Were there those like himself or Chester, who became pets or otherwise legally owned creatures? Or were the Pokémon the dominating and 'controlling' creatures of that world? Were there even humans in that world? Part of him couldn't help but be curious about the subject matter.

"...a reason to care? I shouldn't have to make people care about what they're doing," Leoquin rebuked, with the answer seemingly fitting with the beliefs he had presented. "That should be a default. But... I understand that's a bit much to ask of some folk. Hard to believe that you're anything more than a bunch of opportunists when you were just fine with killing random innocents for a living, or making friends with someone who murdered hundreds of your fellow countrymen without a care in the world. Maybe one day you'll show that what you do means more to you than just surviving and filling your pockets."
As Leoquin spoke, Ilasi finally finished bandaging up his arm. "...you're going to want to take it easy with that arm for a bit," Ilasi cautioned, though she wasn't sure how well Leoquin would heed the warning.
"Thanks. I'll be at the wheel if you need me."

The three former pirates firmly believed it was pointless to keep discussing with Leoquin. Even if they told him what they said to Ilasi, they knew he was just going to keep criticizing them. While Random and Opium were upset, Sand Dune dismissed it as nothing more than a poor merman too full of pain to care about whom he hurt with his words or premature judgement. After Leoquin left, Random did a bunch of signals, but Sand Dune rather not traduce.
"I do feel sorry for that guy. In the few times we have seen him, he is always alone. If only there was a way to make him more friendly. I can understand him taking out his anger on people like us, but you?" Sand Dune said to Ilasi, wondering what kind of men could be so cruel to a beautiful, wonderful lady like her, especially when all she did right now was cure him.

Random on the other hand, believed the reason for his hostility towards the young lady was due to jealousy. Perhaps he developed a grudge after Ilasi decided to choose the kind Maverick over him, her same species? It wasn't too out of place to think about it. He hasn't seen anybody being mean to Ilasi, except him.

Unknown to Raclaw, thinking of Mischief only added stress to Angora, but she knew he was trying to change the subject for her sake, so she didn't say anything.
"I really don't know what's the deal. I'm not doing anything special, yet she has this... loyalty, as if she has known me all her life." Angora declared, finding it rather annoying how many creatures wanted her lately.
"If we return to the main land, I hope Maverick and Ilasi take Mischief with them if she has nowhere else to go. If I end up leaving with Veris, I know the wyvern won't like having her around. I'm certain he would eat her in the blink of an eye if he is allowed." Angora confessed, not telling Raclaw directly how she knew, but wanting him to be aware how serious the situation was. And that was when Mischief was a small little thing. Now that she has evolved, the troll had no doubt Veris would be more tempted now that his prey had more meat.

"Hmm-- perhaps it's a trait of her species or Pokémon in general. Or perhaps she sees in something in you that few others see, like Maverick or Illasi. She seemed independent enough when she came onboard, but now....," Raclaw paused thinking of his own situation; and how he had bonded with another to the point of giving up his own freedom. "Well-- she's behaving almost as Chester and I would to Latnok, except you and her are not owner/pet. But perhaps I am simply overthinking things and she is simply easy to trust," he then admitted revealing his feelings on the subject. He hoped the best for everyone and hoped that no-one took it too hard upon any necessary separations upon this journey's conclusion.

Angora didn't think much of what Raclaw said. She knew Maverick liked her from the very beginning, but she wasn't too sure about Ilasi.
"Well whatever the case, being with Maverick and Ilasi is her best bet. And Shade... well if all goes well, he will have his freedom back and return to his family. As for me... well you know..." Angora said, knowing she didn't have to dwell on the matter anymore. She truly believed her friends would go their separate ways, and that meant she would only have one road left.

"But there will be time to think about that. First we have to deal with the people attacking us. There will be time to worry about this. In the meantime... please, just try to talk to him one of these days. If he approaches you first, then better." Angora asked, reminding Raclaw about the favor. She then looked at the island, the giant beast still being visible. While she had dismissed the chance of getting a tooth, she was tempted to get one, if only for decoration. True, it would remind her of the humiliating thing she had to do to help in the battle, but it felt like a waste not taking a souvenir from the monster...
