How do you let go of someone?

How do you let go of your feelings for someone, especially when you know nothing good can ever come of them, or that those feelings will never be returned? Can be referring to romantic, platonic, or familial feelings.

(because taking advice from a forum dedicated to a little purple dragon is obviously the best course of action)

You don't. Not consciously, anyway.

You just try not to focus on them and hope they go away.

You'd be surprised how relevant this is to me right now lol. I'll let you know when I figure out a solution. In the meantime just try to keep hanging out with your friends (or make new ones if your situation is any way similar to mine) and try to make the best of life.

I can't even get over this guy who couldn't even tell me himself that he didn't want to be friends. I want to hate him so much for it because he told me he appreciated my friendship, he made me think I could trust him with anything. And then he went and ended it in the most cowardly way because apparently, none of that was ever true.

I want to hate him.
Maybe it would be easier that way.
But I can't.

Just accept that nothing can come of it and try to move on, really. Time heals all. Healthy relationships with family and friends are far more deserving of your attention and love than something unproductive or harmful. I just try to focus on that.

Letting go has never been a problem for me. Since my late teens I've had quite a bit of control over my own emotions, and that control has only grown stronger over the years. To me it has mostly felt like a natural consequence of many growing/learning experiences.

As for how I do it, it's mostly just cold rationale. The (perhaps) uncomfortable truth is that your feelings are a very bad tool for translating stimuli into desired thought and action. They might be a part of you, but they don't have anything innately "pure" or "correct" about them. You can love someone for the wrong reasons or despite factors that would lead either one or both of you into ruin, you can be tremendously passionate about something entirely useless or counterproductive, and something very harmful for your health can make you feel very happy or fulfilled. It's just simply better to distrust these kinda feelings.

Now, obviously I'm not saying you should completely disregard them always. It's very important to be honest to yourself about how and why you feel a certain way. But whenever you're making decisions/plans with long-term well-being or success in mind, be wary of what you're feeling at the moment.

I haven't read the other posts, but I usually let go of someone (toxic friends or bad familiy members) by just ignoring them and hope they stop talking to me.

Olivia: I tried my best to be nice to her, but then I snapped at her and pretty much stopped communicating with her. We were friends for three years or so, but she was really bad for me. She kept trying to apologize, but I brushed it off in the nicest way possible.

Greg (Biological Father) : I just tried to cut all times with him. Mom gave him my email though, even though I have told her repeatedly I want nothing to do with him and his sick mind. Gah... Whenever he texts or emails, I just ignore them or delete them.

This probably wasn't a help, but... smilie ;
