  • You can't actually see galaxies with a naked eye like you can in many movies and video games. Our eyes would have to be massive to compensate for the short exposure time of the individual images they detect. Think about it, we're inside one right now and we only see it as a faint glow in the night sky.

  • The planets in our solar system are further away from each other than you probably think they are.

  • Light year is actually not the most used unit of length in astronomy. There is another unit called "parsec" which is defined as exactly 648000 astronomical units divided by pi, which is the distance at which one astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arcsecond (one 3600th of a degree). That's about 3.261 light years.
