Damnit guys, you couldn’t have waited till I got to college to start WW3.

Joking aside, I’m hoping this is just more national dick waving and nothing too major

Russia would be stupid to try. They'd have nothing to gain and everything to lose

I doubt Russia will step in for the above reasons. they don't give a ****, not putin. it would be suicidal to stand against the U.S./U.K./France for that. sad as that is...

EDIT: worded that a little rudely, I just mean to assure everyone that we don't have anything to worry about as far as things directly affecting us, or a big WWIII thing happening. more like carm said, another Iraq.

Y'all right and I agree. I'm easily spooked about this kind of stuff because being directly involved in a war is one of my biggest fears.

I consider myself very lucky to have been born somewhere such as the US. It's hard to fathom what people in war-torn countries have to experience and the fear they must live in everyday.

I'm pretty much on the same boat myself, I don't really want other war.

Regarding Bombings, that's another fear. Living near one of, if not THE most, important place in all of the USA, you know it'd be a major target and that's nerve racking as hell.

I agree too that being in WWIII is one of my biggest fears as well. I always hoped that Australia stayed out of whatever the US and UK planned but that's not going to happen.

My thoughts are still largely the same as they were during the last time this happened. I mostly see it as a show of force and a fake retaliation to keep the proxy war going in the interest of Israel's national security.

This time around though, I can't honestly say that I believe the official story about the chemical attack on Duma. It's just too convenient to have happened exactly when it did.

But yeah, it's not going to be WW3.

Alright, looks like Fallout's gonna be real. Better get my trusty Vault 13 canteen ready.

In all seriousness, this may sound stupid, but I'm not actually that worried. I mean, yes, this could be the start of something bad, but I don't think anything will become of it because what everyone would have to lose.

Like Metallo said, Russia would have nothing to gain from standing against the freight train that is the United States, and the losses would be too much to for any of it worth doing.

So I'm not too worried. For now, at least.

Just my two cents.

Can anyone give me a crash course article or video discussing the subject and the events leading up to this? Other than the knowledge that Syria has been in a civil war for the better part of the decade and chemical attacks were seemingly used recently, I'm extremely ignorant to why this is causing fears of a WWIII and when Russia got involved in the affairs.

I could have done a better job of collecting this stuff, but it will give you a pretty good idea...

most of it is pretty short, though.

To answer the first part, it's basically that we're fighting a proxy war against Russia and people are worried that it can become a direct war.

The second part is tricky because Russia has never been clear about it (then again, neither have we), but the most obvious answers are that Russia has a naval facility in Syria and the Assad regime purchases Russian weapons. Also there's a concern about Russian nationals supporting the rebels and ISIS.

While I don't think bombs will ever bring peace and the legality of the whole thing being somewhat questionable I honestly don't know what else they were supposed to do about it at this point...being powers against the use of chemical weapons doing nothing about it wasn't really a viable option. Solving things diplomatically would have obviously been first on the list had Russia not vetoed everything they could. It's not a great situation either way and I think they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't...wishing that things could have been done earlier isn't productive at this point and given the circumstances I can somewhat understand why they felt it was necessary. I just don't believe this will actually make a huge difference and will most likely prompt more aggression.
