Is Nostalgia milked too much in Today's Media.

From It and Stranger Things taking place in the 80s, to Pokemon's recent over saturation of Gen 1 merch to Nintendo's Console Classics series, and of course, N-Sane and Reignited. To me it feels as if Nostalgia is stronger than ever and maybe it's getting a bit tiring...maybe?

I'm not saying it's bad, btw, just a bit over done.

I mean

As a person who didn't grow up in the 80's, it doesn't seem that way

It's also the fact that I am one of the 7 people on earth who has never played the original spyro and crash games, and have no access to them

So, I don't see it that way

Because of the cyclical nature of culture we're currently in the period where there's a marked callback to earlier generations in order to appeal to older generations. Whether it's used as a marketing tool or a passion project hearkening to simpler times, there's always going to be an oversaturation of these properties. When done well, I appreciate it, but I don't think it's indicative of society running out of ideas or lacking any original content.

90s nostalgia is in right now, of course businesses want to capitalize on it. I dont think it means a lack of creativity or anything. I’m sure that once it dies down, a new trend will take its place.

I don't think it means a lack of creativity, but more so just pandering and over saturation. I do enjoy some of it, like the Duck Tales reboot (Which might not count) is great and doesn't feel like it's trying to cash into the nostalgic demographic. It feels like just the right amount of new and old.

The second half of the book (Adult part) took place in the 80's, while the first half (Kid part) took place in the late 1950's. While in the movie, it was in the 80's and then the upcoming sequel is will be in current times.

I mean, sure. I also think that most media is self-referential inherently. There’s practically only one story. Besides, I’m sure the earliest works of fiction were inspired by each other, so I don’t mind nostalgia coming back if the work stands out from the original in a good, interesting way.

Ready Player One is proof enough if we're being honest.

I thought the movie was fun but it, and its box office success, is proof enough that media and entertainment relies heavily on nostalgia, and yet for very good reason (it works). Makes me wonder how 2010s nostalgia will look like in 2034.

Why does that terrify you? I get the attitude is snobby, but I have an appreciation for lots of things not of my generation, I’m sure kids of the future will be the same way

My bad. I meant in the visual medium.

2010s music at this point is very well defined through the rise of EDM producer driven hits and solo acts like Swift and Sheeran. But as far as television or film is concerned the only real defining traits I can think of so far are shared universes and trailers that start off with quiet piano keys followed by a somber cover of an upbeat pop song.

A lot of the most notable visual products of the decade (Stranger Things, Walking Dead) is harkening back to past products.

you see... the nineties never died. when 2000 came along the nostalgia trip was already present. we've been living in the nineties since the nineties, we only notice it now because us nineties kids are getting old and we can only remember our old selves as we go senile slowly but surely.

there will be no future nostalgia of the 2010s because the 2010s was still the ninties.

also note I am in love with nineties despite saying this. also eighties, thank you.

I not going to lie I don't have a problem with it since I love a lot of ps1 games and secretly hoping something happens with Croc and the Digimon World games.

But I do generally despise the pokemon fanbase and the extreme pandering to 1st gen though. I just want torchic merch yet all I can get is 1st gen starters or pikachu.

I think it's just a natural byproduct of our past being better preserved. All the shows we watched and the music we listened to can be instantly bought or streamed, so we can always access old media from the past. Everything is mass produced and is available on ebay, so it's always pretty easy to buy old toys and old video games and whatever else from the past. Back in the olden days, old shows weren't carefully preserved the way they are now, old toys and other things weren't kept around or sold on ebay, the past was basically just left behind and people had to keep looking forward. But now people are able to bask in the past as much as they want, and the market has adapted to that fact.

I totally agree. It's because it's easier to profit off of an already established and well liked idea than to create a new, original idea.
