Drugs & criminal justice

Personally I have much less sympathy for dealers than I do users. IMO users should always get minimal sentences in rehabilitative correctional environments, barring any violent related crimes of course. I'm the son of an addict so it's kinda personal to me.

Your thoughts?

More or less about the same. There should be more focus on rehabilitating users than criminalizing them. Dealers on the other hand should serve at least a minor punishment for enabling these destructive habits, even if they themselves are doing it out of desperation.

Agreed

I mean, using drugs is bad, but those people need help more than anything

Users should get the help they need and have (in most cases) minimal punishment. Dealers should face serious time, though.

Never really thought about the dealers much before.

I guess it depends on the types of drugs they sell. I really don’t know my own stance on it though.

I think the solution is to find the guy who's making all the drugs and tell him to stop it.

I think that possession and usage should not be illegal. Only dealing the drugs should be illegal. And of course in my own idealistic world the whole drug business would be a legal and respectable business with proper trained professionals taking care of making and distributing the product.

Last year I lost several friends due to heroin overdoses, the death sentence isn't what the dealers should get I feel that life in prison without parole would be a better punishment.

That's still a bit too extreme. That, and I feel like it really depends on the situation.
Some people are kind of forced into it because they can't make money otherwise, and while it's still obviously bad and they should be punished for it, killing them or putting them in jail for the rest of their lives seems kind of extreme.

If the dealer is killing people on purpose, or adding additional stuff into the drugs that make them even worse without telling the buyers, then obviously that is really bad and they should probably get life in prision, but some people only do it to make ends meet.

Cigarettes are legal even though they're generally just as bad and kill many people, but you wouldn't arrest a 7/11 employee for selling them, would you?
Not to mention that, while addictions are hard to break, people buying drugs are a part of the problem as well.

You're right and I do apologize for my comment.

Smoking's bad m'kay but to say cigarettes are just as bad as heroin is not accurate

I will say this

I myself, believe Marujuana isn't dangerous, and Cigarettes should be illegal

I've never used Marujuana and I never plan on using it

Dealers should be punished, Users should be given help with possible addictions

EDIT:Fixed a statement I didn't know was a horrible idea

Alcohol is significantly more dangerous for our society than heroin, so while I don't agree that it should be illegal, it's not a ridiculous point.

Yeah, this. The sad thing about a lot of drug dealers is that they're usually regular people (aside from cartel members and the higher ups obv) just trying to feed their families. Does that make it right? No. Does that mean they don't have any responsibility in the matter? No. But to crucify a guy who lives in a bad neighborhood and is struggling to find a better job that would actually pay the bills doesn't seem right to me.

I think it's really interesting the standards people seem to have though. The leading cause of death in the US is caused by heart disease. Two major factors of heart disease include smoking and excessive drinking, also two drugs that are entirely legal.
The second leading cause of death in the US is cancer, and it's common knowledge that smoking and drinking can cause cancer.
The third leading cause of death is COPD, caused by smoking.
The fourth is accidental death, car accidents being one of the most common. 1 out of every 3 vehicle related deaths are caused by drunk driving.

I can go down the list and relate many of these to smoking and drinking, both entirely legal and available to young adults. Heroin, cocaine, opiods, those all sound scarier. The total amount of drug related deaths is still lower than alcohol related deaths, and significantly lower than smoking. If you're looking for someone to point the finger at for the biggest drug problem other than alcohol and tobacco, big pharma is where the blame lies.
