Microsoft to ban 'offensive language' from Skype, Xbox, Office and other services

Actually **** off. Just another reason why Discord is a better communication service. Seriously, what’s even the point?

I personally don't like Discord that much, at least when compared to Skype, but it's almost as if Microsoft wants Skype to fail. lmao This is the literal definition of corporate suicide. lol

legit, they seem to actually want to kill skype at this point, lol. I don't understand how you can even moderate something on such a grand scale. especially voice chat, unless, what, they're going to listen in on you...? I highly doubt they're going to do that. maybe it's just talk...?

ooooo, Microsoft, lol

Isn't this because of the nice law the US passed where they'll hold any site accountable for the content the users create

meaning someone saying bad words on Skype can totally get them sued, as ridiculous as that is

Comment chain with way more information than me. Basically, if you talk about piracy in a forum, the forum owners can be held accountable if they don't remove it before someone brings in law enforcement. This also means no place that allows discussion of illegal activities, but good luck enforcing that, though reddit pretended to work with it and banned a bunch of subs about trading airsoft guns.

edit: mixed up MS' rules with the actual law's issues.

I completely agree. It's not just with offensive things either, it's also religious things. I don't know what it's like where you guys live, but in Australia they're beginning to stop using the words Easter and Christmas because it might offend people of another culture.

Maybe a bit sensitive to some people. v
I completely draw the line at r*pe jokes though. No one should ever joke about that and whoever does is disgusting.

Don't want to start an argument, but...
As someone who has been raped more than once, I still personally don't see the problem with rape jokes (Hell, I make them myself sometimes) so long as you know your audience and don't say them around people who are uncomfortable with it.
I don't think someone's disgusting just because they have a dark sense of humor. :/ If they do it around people they know don't like it, then they're just an asshole at that point.

I suppose if you mean someone saying that they want someone to have that happen to them, then yeah, that's ****ed up, though.

Don't worry, I sorta get where you're coming from.
But it's really sensitive material to a lot of people. It's not like making fun of a profession, or even a religion ... it's making fun of a lot of people's trauma that can damage them for the rest of their lives. To me, it's akin to making a joke about a dead person. You just shouldn't do that, it's completely insensitive.
I see I was out of line to say people who joke about it are disgusting, and I'm very sorry if saying that offended you! I think those jokes are disgusting though.

If they honestly want to do this, it'd make more sense to just add a report option instead.
Even if one's saying slurs, I don't feel like that's a cause for punishment unless it's being used in an offensive/unironic context, and even then, if nobody they're talking to cares, it isn't really any of Microsoft's business. :/

Tbh private messaging between people is kind not even Microsoft's business to begin with. Both in this situation and how they treated MSN. IM apps are definitely not Microsoft's strong suit.

Turns out that Microsoft will not be listening in on calls or reading people's messages, but will rather be relying on users to report inappropriate content. (Which may also include the need for evidence as well)

Seems like the original statement was just worded really badly, though obviously it's their fault for wording it in such a way in the first place. :/ Happy to see this is the case, and not the alternative, though.

uh, hell yeah. that's a better reasoning than what we thought from before. thanks for posting, skype users can now rest assured, lol.

More and more people are switching to Discord anyway, so this will probably be the final nail in the coffin for Skype.

I used Skype for so long so I was really reluctant to switch, but once I finally did I realized how many issues Skype actually has that they refuse to fix.

I highly doubt that first part. Millions upon millions of people still use Skype, and Discord is generally not geared towards a lot of the people that use it.
And plus, it wouldn't be the "final nail" because, if you had read what I posted, you'd notice that they just worded the original statement really badly.

discord is more focused towards young adults and gamers anyways, everyone and their grandma uses skype
