(But do realize that a lot more people (As in most of the community - Tumblr and the like is a minority) don't want to reclaim a word that literally means weird and has been used to discriminate our community in much the same way the F slur has)

I gotta side with Sess on this one. "Reclaim" or not, it still, yeah, basically means "weird". Do we really want to be calling ourselves such a word to make ourselves out to be abnormal, rather than trying to normalize the idea of being LGBTetc? Using the word, even if in an attempt to reclaim it, still makes being gay as something unusual to be ashamed of by definition.

Not to butt in here but uhh.... queer is kinda literally the academic term for LGBT theory. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer_theory

Like there's a literal class at my uni called "Queer Theory". Every essay I've ever read about LGBT stuff has used the word "queer". Yes queer has been used to mean 'weird' and have negative conotations but..... so does gay? It is definitely not just a "tumblr thing".

At the end of the day if u don't wanna use it urself that's fine, you're more than free to do that but saying No One is alllowed to use it, even when talking about just themselves, is kinda ignoring a lot of the history and Actual Written Theory about it. So basically if you don't like it, that's fine, but unless you want to get into a literal fist fight with Judith Butler then you can't really stop other people from using it. Queer tends to be used cause it works as a much more general umbrella term that covers a lot of the identities not covered in LGBT acronym, and it's more convenient for people who fall under more than one lgbt category so they don't have to list of every single thing they identify as whenever someone asks. And lgbt is kinda a mouthful tbh.

I'm normally not one to get involved in these sorts of discussions here but since I do Literally study this as part of my degree I felt like I needed to butt in.

And I rather get that that's a thing and it is being more normalized like that, but in a way it's almost like the n-word. It has been normalized in a sense where black people use it and call each other such with no real care anymore, but at the end of the day, it's still an offensive term people are trying to make ok. Exactly for the bolded reason, I fall under 2 categories (L and T) so I just used queer to shorten my post (because many people would get on my case if I said the obvious "I am trans" post)
