Say you were one of the many hundreds involved in making a high budget piece of entertainment, specifically you might be within the art department or music department and you put your all into it. The game or movie gets released and it's financially successful (or at least just breaks above even) but is widely panned by critics, fans and consumers in general despite initial praise for the music and art direction.

Think about it. Despite your best effort to making the film or game look or sound as great possible, the writing of the story, character and the themes are either make it so painfully cliche at best or into the absolute piece of entertainment of your time. At least for films, it could be easier to move on to other projects but you're an employee withing the company that published this awful awful game, so you're stuck and may feel like your contribution is part of the arguments of how style over substance ruins entertainment.

How would you feel? I would feel awful, wishing I was never involved in the first place or put in just as little effort as the rest of the idiots who don't know how to tell stories for my all my effort was worth.

I think I'd feel somewhat depressed, but if people liked the specific area I worked on I wouldn't feel too discouraged. It would have been a good experience working on such a project regardless of how the public received it. Also I would have been paid either way sooo onwards and upwards

Just joke about it. Probably, I wasn't at a high enough order to make the decisions, but if I was, it would probably hurt a lot.

If I'm only involved and not like one of the guys on top, I would only get money and not lose anything so I'd be perfectly fine lol

Did I get money? Then swallow the pill and hope I can move into something better ASAP. Criticizing the progress before it's out is a nice way of getting blacklisted, I can wait until it bombs.

Now, if I'm not getting paid and everyone knows the creators aren't getting paid...

If I get paid for it? Easy.

Record a 10-hour video of me laughing whilst being showered in money and upload it to Youtube so the peasants cry silently as they watch their hard-earned money falling down upon me as I laugh at them.

I would collect my paycheck and go home

I would be proud that I at least tried to make my part as good as possible, but then I'd look for work in a company that makes better games or movies. Assuming it was possible for me to do that. I don't know how difficult it is to move around between companies in the video game or movie industry. Maybe I'd just be glad to have any well-paying job at all.

Screw the critics, they get paid to criticize. I'd care about the fans. They're the ones who pay my salary anyway.

If that was the case, I'd use whatever pull I had in the company to get them to receive, organize and implement fan input in a way that makes future products better.
