This is BIG news.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/12/1...deal/index.html

With this, Disney now owns the rights to the Original copies of Star Wars, which is great, but here's the major stuff

They now own X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Blue Sky Studios, which includes Ice Age, Rio, Ferdinand and The Peanuts movie, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Always Sunny, The Orville, Modern Family and more. They also now own 60% of Hulu.

The most major being the Marvel properties and possibly Blue Sky, as Disney now has THREE Animation studios under it's belt.

The shows that they now haven I assume are going to be on their upcoming streaming service, Simpsons, Family Guy and even Orville(Watch Orville please, it's awesome I need to catch up) are highly rated popular shows that would get subscriptions easily.

How dy'all feel about this?

Nah, they won't. They know it's a big money maker. If anything, it'll be released under the Fox label.

This is really bad news all things considered. The historic Big Six film studios has now become the Big Five (and could turn into Four any day now with Sony circling the drain). I love Disney and love that they understand to make a good product in order to get profits, but a monopoly isn't good for anyone. With this they'll control over 30% of the market share in Hollywood.

People seem to overlook this **** because "yay I can maybe get my original trilogy re-releases!" but don't realize how damning everything else is.

You mean the film that's all but complete except for post-production and already has a trailer, poster, and set release date?

It'll be fine.

EDIT: Should also note they didn't buy 21st Century Fox, but rather their assets (which includes 20th Century Fox). Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Sports, and other branches in that field will still operate, and are NOT a part of the Disney deal.

Don't forget they now also own Anastasia & Titan A.E. Yep, Anastasia is now officially a Disney movie.

Not too thrilled about it tbh. Really don't want to see X-Men rebooted more than it has for MCU. Sure those movies weren't great, but they had a certain special charm I'd come to enjoy, not to mention that I really don't want to see the bigger MCU movies cluttered with even more heroes who'll get less screentime than they already do. Deadpool 2 should be fine, but what's this mean for any hope of a 3? Disney becoming more of a monopoly that controls everything just isn't too great looking as a whole.

Fixed, thank you!

And yeah, this is a total monopoly regardless. Marvel fans everywhere are rejoicing at the fact that Marvel has it's properties again, and they have every right to be, but t the same time they say "Oh no, it's not a Monopoly! Fox was selling anyway". Yes, that's true that Fox was selling, but it's still a monopoly.

I mean, could it have been possible for Disney to buy only certain assets, like Star Wars and Marvel only, or was it a full Fox package only?

I expect Deadpool to be fine, to be honest. I'm just not sure how they'll be distributed, although, it might be released under the Disney Owned Fox Label, if such a thing will exist.

Although, I am expecting X-Men and F4 to appear in the MCU within the next, er, ten years or so.

Also, I'm curious about the future of Blue Sky, if closed down, I expect animators and creators to move to Pixar or Disney Animation. I doubt it'll close though, Blue Sky's films make great money, and knowing Disney, it'll wanna capitalize on that.

I imagine Marvel fans are squeeing with delight but, I'm-a come right out and say it, I strongly hope the anti-trust lawyers will block this. I'm not a business major, but everything about this deal reads anti-consumer. Disney gets a boatload of intellectual properties, and can use that momentum to start their own streaming platform and (theoretically) pull their (newly-acquired) media from existing streaming services to force people over to their network. Not to mention, it gives them an iron grip on the television and film industries.

And since Fox News is left out of the deal, it can continue to be the misery-inducing monster that it is. Frankly, the only people who win in this deal (aside from shareholders) are Marvel fans and, I'm sorry, but I can't get behind that for the sake of some X-Men and Fantastic Four movies.

I'm not even real happy about it from a Marvel standpoint. It screams bad news to me from pretty much every standpoint. Hopes for them doing something with Anastasia like a live action remake or a KH world is the only silver-lining for me. Even then, there's downsides with both of those that makes it hard for me to really be happy for that thought even.

I expect new actors for everyone, tbh, outside of the Deadpool cast, maybe. Ryan Reynolds IS Deadpool and getting someone new would be wrong AND there'd be HUGE backlash, no doubt.

Also, Brianna Hildebrand needs to stay Negasonic Teenage Warhead because she's great as her and also incredibly attractive.

Mostly the casting concerns are in regards to Ryan Reynolds & NTW. I also don't think anyone could ever outdo Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, though I've heard of him wanting to retire from the role anyway. Plus Patrick Stewart as Professor X & Ian McKellen as Magneto. Even McAvoy & Fassbender just weren't the same for the prequels.

On a related note, I wonder what this is going to mean for Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch.

That would make the second entertainment industry that they have bought. They not only own ABC, but now they own Fox. That was over the course of 22 years, but give them another 10 and they will own NBC, Sony, Nintendo, McDonald's, NASA, you, me, and the American Government.

Worst case scenario would be an Ice Age Cinematic Universe.

I was literally having a conversation about this with a friend as I left to watch TLJ. And, without spoilers.

I don't like where this is going, even less than before. If that's what happened to sacred cow Star Wars... I'm not sharing full opinions since it's not even fully out yet, but there are things in that movie that concern me the most because they can be applied to ANY franchise that they get afraid of promoting.

To be fair though, Iger doesn't specify that Deadpool would be in the MCU, or that they would continue to use the same version of Deadpool if he did show up in the MCU, just that Deadpool would continue to be R rated and that Disney might create a brand specifically for R rated Marvel movies (or maybe they'll just keep using the 20th Century Fox brand).

My guess is that they are just going to let the Deadpool movies continue as they are now, with no effort made to connect them to the MCU. They will probably also start making other R rated Marvel movies under this new brand, but much like the Netflix shows they will never be strongly connected to the MCU (at best they will have vague references to the MCU, but they will never be referenced by the MCU, and there will never be any character crossovers).

Yes, true, but it seems they intend to have Deadpool in the MCU, as said in this article. Although, whether it's a new DP or still Ryan, is not addressed yet, but I'm thinking it'll still be him, if they got someone new there'd be out cry for sure. If you know the story behind Ryan Reynolds and trying to get Deadpool greenlit, getting someone else to play the chaarcter would be cruel.

They'll have to make an R-rated division or release Deadpool under the Fox label if they intend to keep Deadpool's profitability. No one is going to see a Deadpool movie if it's PG13 or doesn't have Ryan Reynolds. The first film's R rating was going to make or break the movie and that's why people were so relieved when Reynolds said it would be R. I think Disney is well aware that they have to keep their hands off of Deadpool if they want to make any money off of it.

This doesn't just apply to Deadpool. Remember how upset people were when Alien vs. Predator was PG13? Can you imagine the outcry if the next Alien film wasn't R? They'll have to embrace an R-rated approach at some point or they won't get anything out of some Fox properties.

Besides, Disney has technically released R-rated movies before. They own Touchstone Pictures. Down and Out in Beverly Hills was released in 1986 and is technically the first R-rated film released by Disney because they released it through this label. So if they wanted to they could also use that label to release stuff like Deadpool.

As for everything else, I mean at the moment there isn't much else I care about besides Alien and the Marvel properties. X-Men and Fantastic Four are uncertain but I'm certain that Disney is going to do something with R-rated stuff because they'll lose profits from properties like Deadpool and Alien if they aren't.
