I'd use the release date of the MLP movie, and mention it as a potential herald of 2D animated movies returning to the big screen.

But as you can see, the release date for this movie is all over the place.

Yes, and no.
I just don't think there are many on this website, and those that are/were have either moved on or just don't express it.

The Fandom is very much alive, but there's just no media sensationalism over "these guys watch a cartoon show about ponies" anymore.

Heck, I'm trying to ponify Crusader Kings II, but since I'm not an artist or skilled coder, I'm stuck with the default horse portraits and I will probably not write a lot of flavour events.
But that's besides the point.

I'm sure they're still knocking about, but I think the Brony label gets a lot less flak because there's many adults watching children's TV shows, and there's an increase in demand for cartoons made for adults. I concur with Drawdler in that this would be more fitting in, say, 2013 when the fandom was greater and had more publicity. My other suggestion would've been to maybe release the movie after the fandom dies down a bit, but I'm not sure if MLP has that same staying appeal as TMNT - would many bronies watch the film if it were to come out five years later?
