I probably won't get ARMS. I'm more interested in FE Warriors, Mario + Rabbids, and Kirby Switch. And I probably won't even get a Switch for a long time, I only have £50 now and estimate I'll have £250 by Autumn/Fall.

And what is Single Player in ARMS like anyway? I hardly play online, partially because I'm crap at fighting games and partially because I don't have any friends.

It's your classic "beat 9 matches to face the final boss" plus you have access to all multiplayer modes plus some exclusive single player modes.

Also the online has free lobbies, you don't need friends to play it.

That plus Team Battle, Hoops (throw your opponent at the basket), V-Ball (punch the ball to explode on the side of your opponents), Skillshot (break Targets before your opponents), 1-vs-100 (punch 100 enemies) and ARMS Training (beat matches with randomly selected ARMS). Some of these appear during Grand Prix (beat 9 matches plus the boss) and Party Match lobbies (online lobbies with up to 20 people). The game has also Ranked Matches (1 vs. 1 battles against other random players, with no itens and a rank system; where you go up and down on the rank depending of your results).

And how different is each character? In all the videos I've seen, all the characters look like they play the same - Throw arms, grab with arms, generally no variation that I've seen.

I've also heard it's possible to play with a single Joy-Con, so I'm also assuming there's an option to play without motion controls (I hate using motion controls)? Not sure on this one.

The characters change on special abilities and stats (like speed and grab strength) rather than their moveset. For example, Ribbon Girl can do multiple jumps, Master Mummy can heal himself while blocking, etc. Half of the strategy comes from the characters, the other comes with the ARMS (basically the gloves) you use. Each one changes things like strength, form of punching, size, and all of them have a special ability while charged (like freezing or burning the opponent). Each character has three different ARMS from the start, but you can unlock ARMS from certain characters for other characters. For example, you can unlock Min Min's ARMS for Spring Man. This can be done in a minigame where you punch targets and gift boxes to get new ARMS (or upgrade the ones you already have, in case you get doubles).

If you don't like motion controls, you can use two Joy-Cons in the Grip or the Pro Controller. You can also use a single Joy-Con, but I've heard it's the worst option available.
