Netflix started cancelling series without concluding them now, even if apparently this one is notoriously expensive it's setting a standard.

Apparently poor ratings compared to how much they put into it. But even on other shows that they didn't want to continue, they always gave budget to finish it proper, from what I heard. With this, Acti can simply ask them to axe the show even with a cliffhanger.

mabey academy will have been more successful if it was a saturday morning cartoon or somthing.

A new animated series just launched on Netflix called Trollhunters. Watch the first couple episodes and tell me it's not objectively better than Skylanders Academy.

(It also has a full 26 episode season, as opposed to the weak 12 episode season that SA got... and only gets good in the last couple episodes.)

We enjoyed Academy for what it is, a silly kid's show based off of a video game franchise. The most important thing from Academy first and foremost is the comedy, which I think it nailed. From what I can tell, Trollhunters is not a comedy.

Well, Mcmurderpaws, you can create your discussion about Trollhunters on Idle Chatter if you like it so much. I for one would rather enjoy what's possibly the series' last hurrah.

But Voltron looks so much objectively better than Trollhunters does, which by your logic means you should enjoy that instead of that.

No, not at all. But when I said I didn't like Skylanders Academy, everybody gave me $#!@ for my reasoning (poor world building, boring story, nothing to recommend it to adult viewers) on the grounds that it is a kid's show.

So is Trollhunters, but it doesn't have any of thr failings I just mentioned. My only real complaint about it is that the first two episodes should have been one 45-min long premiere episode, because it takes both to set the stage properly.

I'm not arguing. In fact, I mentioned Voltron as an example of "kid's show done better" previously, and was ignored on the grounds that SA doesn't have to be better because... it's a kid's show.

I agree with you that "being a kids show" isn't a excuse, and maybe your complaints on Academy are okay, but no need to show other series if you tried to give your point before.

Yeah, you couldn've gone about it waaaay better than flame baiting. Would be very on topic you,say, got two similar episodes to compare and explained why the pacing/moral/whatever was done better in the show you liked. Just bringing it up isn't anything to do with SA.

I've posted at length on why I feel Academy is an incredibly weak show. Virtually everyone complains that my opinion is invalid with the same flimsy excuse: it is a kid's show.

So I bring up another kid's show that doesn't share the weaknesses of Academy, released the same way Academy was, to point out that it's possible to be both a kid's show and objectively good on its own merit... and the argument is that it doesn't matter because it isn't Skylanders Academy. (Note that I am NOT discussing the other show's plot, characters, settings, etc.)

So what is the point, ultimately? Am I not allowed to have a dissenting opinion on these forums? Does the fact that I am a big fan of the Skylanders games mean that I have to like their deeply-flawed TV show too just because the Skylanders label is stamped on it?

Funny, I feel like getting into specifics on an unrelated show WOULD be derailing the thread, which is why I haven't been doing as you suggest. I felt like talking about the general overall qualities would be safer.

But yeah, both shows are the same genre (adventure comedy) so I could write something up later comparing the pilot episodes if you would find merit in doing so.

No. If you want to talk about a show on this topic, you put it related to SA - a character, an episode, writers, etc. You weren't around for this but people trying to discuss Disney Infinity in Skylanders sections when it was first announced was a huge mess, so the unwritten rule is that unless it's 'hey Captain Jack plays like Wash Buckler' it's best to leave it at Video Gaming/Idle Chatter. Not liking the show is fine,even if we don't agree, but it crosses a line when it's offtopic.

Why not though? If you're trying to say you think Trollhunters does a better job at what Academy does, that's fine by me. But if you're trying to convince everyone that it's an objectively better show, that's exactly what you should do. Like Bifrost said, bring up similar elements and compare them. I don't have any issue with you not liking Academy, hell even I admit it's pretty flawed. But just from that trailer alone, Trollhunters honestly doesn't look much better to me, aside from the animation style.

And even then, there's also nothing wrong with people looking past a show's flaws and enjoying it on their own merits.

why not just like both shows? i am watching both of them and i like them the same, sure SA is not perfeact but you cant just come here and try to convince us that we should watch other show instead becuse SA is not perfact.

There's absolutely no reason to not watch both, if you enjoy them. I never said to watch other shows instead, I just suggested that there are better shows available and listed a few in earlier posts and a new one that was just released. I obviously watched both myself.

As mentioned above, though, I will plan to do a more thorough write-up comparing what the pilot episodes got right and what they could have done better. Just be aware in advance that the "negatives" column for Academy will be notably longer.

Actually, thinking about it, do the pilots even have a remotely similar plot? Because if they don't then it might not be a fair comparison.

I mean, again, just basing it off the trailer, there is something about the prophecy and one of the characters being the chosen one just like there was in Academy, but Academy's pilot was more about being selfless. Haven't watched Trollhunters (haven't even heard of it until today...) so I don't really know.

I Saw two episodes of Trollhunters. You shoulden´t compare Skylanders Academy with this show.

Because Trollhunters is clearly meant to be an Action Cartoon. Also Trollhunters is a creation of Guillermo del Toro both book and TV show.

Skylanders Academy was written by someone who worked on Futurama. Skylanders Academy is one of the few decent good Videogame cartoons out there also it doesn´t focus too much in comedy but i haven´t watched either Gravity Falls and Futurama but remember what the show is meant to be something simliar to those two.

Both series are quite good. But it´s just Season 1 what we are talking about, Although i would to see more action scenes and actual fights.

I finally got around to watching the first few episodes of Academy. I have to say the comedy of this show is shockingly on point. It's almost (but not quite) a satire of the games, which is an interesting direction to go in.

Yup, the cynical writing really has more value if you're a fan of the games. Also why putting it on Imaginators doesn't work since that's a game :I
