in all seriousness tho i think it's pretty neat. yuri is tots adorbs and she's the cutest one in overwatch. just a whole bundle of joy with a cutie patootie smile. so this is another adorable point for her.

TBH, while I like the fact that there is an LGBT Overwatch character, I feel like Tracer being them was kind of a dumb choice, as she was the poster girl and I can't help but she was chosen just to throw her fans for a loop kind of a "lol didnt expect HER to be a lesbain, right guys ?". Maybe she was the obvious choice as well, knowing her popularity next to Winston and the Shimada Bros, they chose her, but I would have liked if it was more unexpected, like Phara or maybe even a male character like Junk Rat.

Before I start, Blizzard had always planned for there to be a gay character in Overwatch; it wasn't something they did because they were pressured by the fans. Not only that, Tracer ISN'T the only gay character. She's only one of the first to be confirmed. I forgot who said it, I believe it was Michael Chu who is in charge of the lore department, but someone said there is at LEAST one LGBT character. AT LEAST, meaning more than one.

But I digress

The fact that Tracer is the first confirmed is SO GOOD to me. Tracer has always been this peppy, optimistic girl. We've known she cares about equality for every walks of life, including Omnics (as shown in the Alive cinematic). We've known that she LOVES Overwatch as a company, not because she gets to fight or it helped her live in society again or gets her a hefty paycheck. She loved Overwatch because it was a family that fought for the idea of hope, the idea of keeping the people safe from what ever evils may live in the world. She doesn't think Overwatch as a group of war dogs.

She thinks it as a group of heroes. She thinks it as a cavalry, the group of people to fight the hardest battles in life. Wars - but also poverty and inequality.

I've always been glad that she was the poster girl, not because she's a gay girl, but because she has those ideals. I hate poster people who are rough'em and tough'em. Tracer is bouncy, energetic, a beacon of hope and light and determination. I don't wanna see some frown on a box, I want a see a bright smile that's ready to save the world.

A lot of people look up to her, and now that she's confirmed gay? Young people who are questioning, and even current LGBT members, have someone to look to in times of trouble. They see this bright young woman, who when time and space were LITERALLY against her, still stuck up for what she believed in. Risked her life to keep those ideals in check. Her being...well, LGBT, means that the minority have something to believe in.

They think "Well if she can do it...why can't I?"

She's everywhere; on boxes, on posters, on banners, on headers, on shirts - EVERYWHERE. She's a prominent figure, a popular figure. Blizzard is well aware they're gonna get a lot of backlash from it, and they already have. But are they gonna change it? Nope.

Keep this in mind: LGBT fans of Overwatch were asking for any character to be gay. They could have made ANYONE gay to please them, but instead, they chose the girl that is the symbol of their game.

The symbol of hope and happiness. To me, that's a pretty great choice for a nice message on the holidays.

Again, I'm not against Tracer being gay and I'm all for it, I just felt it was a tad obvious it was her, is all. I worded my paragraph poorly, I have no problems with her being gay and being the poster girl.

This is the first I've heard of it. People can't possibly be that mad about it.

Just in here I'm hearing more people talking about how others are mad rather than being mad themselves or posting real proof of people being mad.

Just like how they should get over it on the off chance they're actually bothered by it for reasons that aren't "but s-she's supposed to be my waifu!", people should stop trying to conjure up a controversy if there isn't actually one.

I stand corrected.

I can't help but think this wasn't something they thought of way back then. When building a character you usually don't think about orientation unless it's a major part of them (e.g. they have a partner from the outset).
I just imagine them while in the planning phases of the issue "wait what if it isn't a boyfriend...".

I'm personally satisfied with this. It's not something to be overly happy or angry about. It's just something extra to the character. It's not her main point, or something they smash in your face. It has a reason (I guess) and it doesn't overlap what's actually important to her character: her role in the Overwatch team and her powers, which is what matters to the game and main plot. That's the right way to do it. At least in my opinion.

It's odd then that people think this is a marketing ploy or some attempt at a real agenda. If anything Blizzard handled this in the best possible way; by making it a tiny footnote in a comic not everyone is going to read and not making a huge deal about it.

Because it shouldn't be a huge deal anymore. It shouldn't matter.

Either in the form of massive praise and criticism, something like this shouldn't get such a huge reaction anymore. It's not a big brave stand. It's just "she has a gf". I think I'm more proud of Blizzard for not making it a big deal than I am them making an LGBT character to begin with.

I'm writing a screenplay and it's ridiculously easy to make a character gay just by making them refer to a same sex partner. Unless the entire plot is about it, it shouldn't be a big revelation.
