All i want to know is.

Does it have lightsabers?

If not then it's not truly a Star Wars movie and i spit on Disney for ruining the franchise.

I thought the movie was good on a whole. I feel like we needed more back story for some of the characters and some cameos were a little pointless. The movie was great though. By far the darkest star wars movie too. Yes, more than Empire Strikes Back.

Greeble:
Also, Darth Vader does some stuff so yeah, there is a lightsaber used, duh.

it has one lightsaber in one scene and that one scene alone is worth the price of admission

Alright, final opinion.

I didn't really enjoy this movie. I felt no connection or enjoyment to the characters at all.

I enjoyed the movie. Once the whole thing clicked, to avoid spoilers, it's pretty obvious as to why the writing is like that at the latter half. Not something for you enjoy on its own, though, the original trilogy has to be fresh on your mind.

hci's spoilerific review
ok so first up the characters all needed more backstory. we're supposed to care about jin and her dad but we never see them like actually doing daddy-daughter stuff. would have been nice. the captain dude cassion or whatever mentions "oh you arent the only one who lost everything" but then that never gets explained. the blind monk (best character by far) and his friend are supposed to be like lifelong buddies but we're never told why or anything. and when the rebel pilot gets tentacle raped, it just sorta happens and then it gets brushed off 5 minutes after. i wanna believe that there was stuff cut out for time constraints like suicide squad, but i dunno.

the movie also tended to get slow at some points, mainly in the first two acts. but my god when it picked up it picked up hard. the hologram scene with kin and her dad when hes explaining why the deathstar has such a glaring weakness was perfect, my mind was being blown. darth vader's "choke on your ambitions" pun was perfect, but the ending was phenomenal. one by one they all die heroic deaths and its so frikkin poignant. like i expected that some were gonna die, and i thought maybe one or two characters would show up in episode 8 or 9, but jeez they all died! and they did it perfectly too! and darth vader's ending scene was phenomenal. throughout the orginal trilogy we're always told that DV is some sort of all powerful wizardman who must be feared, but we never really get a taste of how powerful he is. that scene where he's just walking through the ship ****ing over everything in his path showed me more about DV's power than 3 entire movies did. and the ending with the carrie fisher lookalike (i saw the movie on the day she died smilie ) was beautiful too.

so in summary, good movie, underdeveloped characters, perfect ending. 8/10 from me

That first half felt all over the place. And while it got saved by the second half, in the end the product we were given is mostly just serviceable.

It's not a bad movie, and in some ways I appreciate it more than VII for trying something new, but it doesn't all quite work in the way I would've liked.

I heard an audible gasp of sorrow when CGI Leia showed up on screen, and a good few whispers.

We're going to have to sit down for a while and have a long discussion about this movie because I think we're in points of differing opinions.
Namely, I think the film wasn't dark enough.

I've heard people complaining about the film score and how it isn't memorable because it wasn't John Williams, but I feel as though the fact it was trying to be Williams at all did not fit the tone the film was trying for. You needed a completely different feel and it's hard to get that engaged when you have these bleak war scenes covered by triumphant trumpets as if it's any other bright sci-fi fantasy.

Yeah, I think the dissonance was very noticeable by the end.

We already didn't care about Cassian and not-Rey enough, and you're going to put this whimsical soundtrack as they get blasted to smithereens? Could've at least had some calm choir like a duty done, not "hey adventure cool big spaceships!" even if that was the focus after.
