Check dat Order of Operations, son! You divide before you multiply the 2 by the 12 in the parenthesis.

288!

48 ÷ 2 (9 + 3)
24 × 12
288

Because math works this way.

I know my order of operations, if I was serious I would've used punctuation.

I'm pretty sure this is actually 2. You multiply BEFORE you divide in the Order of Operations. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.

The way the equation is configured (including parentheses) makes a big difference. If the question was (48 ÷ 2)(9+3), that would lead to 24 * 12 and THAT would be 288. But since that's not the way the equation is configured, it's actually 2.

source: I'm a ****ing math geek

EDIT: going to explain further

So the question is 48 ÷ 2(9+3)

Following the Order of Operations, you solve the parentheses first: PEMDAS

48 ÷ 2(12)

THEN you do multiplication: PEMDAS

48 ÷ 24

Finally, you divide: PEMDAS

2

That's the correct answer for the ORIGINAL question. But if the question was (48 ÷ 2)(9 + 3):

Parentheses: PEMDAS
(24)(12)

Multiplication: PEMDAS
288

Since the first one, there are NO parentheses around 48 ÷ 2, the correct answer, therefore, is 2.

Multiplication/Division are the same step so you just do whatever one comes first in the problem.

this is why the division sign is worthless and should always be the fraction sign

I just remembered that over dinner, dangit

So in that case, the answer actually would be 288. I screwed up. I just finished Pre-Calculus with an A, yet I forgot Multiplication and Division were the same exact step in the Order of Operations. what an embarassment smilie
