Avoid Reddit for my dear life and only come back when the dust settles. I'll recommend that to othets as well.
I don't even have an account or am from the US, but I've seen enough of the politics subs to know it'll be a meltdown.

Just be aware that a Trump victory means that Republicans get to pick who takes that vacant seat in the Supreme Court. Them getting to choose means they choose a conservative. Them choosing a conservative means the court leans to the right. The court leaning to the right means they get the ability to do things such as repel gay marriage if they wanted (they will). |

Yes, but the degree of doom differs. Clinton can't win and get a Democratic Congress, so it'll likely be more years of gridlock, but at that point that Democrats will have the ability to argue that Republicans are deliberately being obstructionists and screwing over the average citizen to bolster their own agenda. And there's historical precedent for this. A Republican-led Congress engaged in deliberate obstructionism when Harry Truman took office from Franklin Roosevelt. When Truman ran for a full term, he ran on a platform that basically did nothing but bash that Congress as incompetent. And the American people infamously agreed ("Dewey Defeats Truman," anyone?), despite Truman being the president who authorized the use of atomic weaponry. By contrast, if Trump wins it's likely he does so with Republicans holding control of all of Congress, thus enabling them to go and enact every ridiculous idea Trump has because, as this campaign has proven, they care more about keeping their jobs than doing the right thing. <.<

If I recall correctly the Supreme Court is currently split down the middle. Being able to elect a conservative judge (which would happen if Trump got in) would sway the leaning toward conservatism, and allow the possibility of Marriage Equality being repelled in a narrow but still decisive decision. It'll receive huge backlash from many across the nation, but the law will be the law and in the same way many conservative states whined about it being passed, so would liberal states whine about it being repelled. No it's not that simple, but a Republican president with a Republican controlled Congress and a conservative leaning court can certainly help push things along. Of course it's worth noting that the law would not be to outlaw gay marriage across the nation, but rather go back to the old system where the legalization of same sex marriage comes down to the states and the states alone. So this could easily be passed through as "giving the states more choice" and "not having big government interfere and have too much power", which is absolutely something that could happen without as much backlash as something like "no gay marriage nationwide". It's not a guarantee, of course, and you're right in that the reception could be too damaging for them to attempt it if they want to keep their jobs (Congress and president I mean), but the fact that the possibility is there is pretty damning. Hillary, Stein, or even Johnson get elected, and they will choose a liberal judge and the idea of repelling Marriage Equality would never be on the table to begin with. Even ignoring Marriage Equality, a conservative judge getting put into the court would still significantly slow down progress for years to come, long after Trump has served his four or even eight years. |

would have preferred trump though, i hate that our govt would lean more conservative, though i doubt big issues like gay marriage or abortion would be repealed, doubt it would get past congress or that trump would do that for all the backlash the real issue is mike pence he can act cool and reserved but inside he's insane. |

^Congress will be Republican controlled if things remain as is. Trump absolutely could get things like that through.
Or rather, congress will get those things through Trump (Trump has mostly been whatever on LGBT until recently to gain more votes). They will also get to choose the next supreme court justice, which will lean conservative after a result and significantly slow down progress. |

Actually, I should really just not pay federal income taxes. Heck, all Americans should. If our POTUS-elect didn't for 20 years, then why should we have to? He purports to make 1000x my income, for heaven's sake.
Good luck financing your boarder wall without a source of income for your government, Trumptler. <.<

The last time Republicans controlled the entire federal government was 1928. And what happened during that period? The Great Depression began, of course.
Best case scenario is Trump is nothing more than a figurehead. The Pentagon ignores him and does its own thing, his cabinet ignores him, Congress ignores him (he can't read, remember, so he won't know what bills he's signing), the Federal Reserve ignores him, etc.

It was a horrible mistake getting on Tumblr. Or any social media site.
"If you voted for [candidate] then unfollow me!!!!!!!111!!" I can't believe the level of immaturity some people are having over this. Everyone has their reasons for voting for a certain candidate, and not everyone who votes for that candidate is an extremist. To think that only extremists support Trump/Hillary is naive. Anyone who's old enough to vote should understand by now that there's a vocal minority and a quiet majority for everything, and that the majority is sane. If anyone's so petty as to demonize someone for their political stance, then they're not much better than their idea of the candidate they hate. To clarify, I'm not saying you're not allowed to be upset that the person you voted for didn't win. Feel the way you feel, it's okay to be angry or sad. Just don't be a dick to other people. |

I warned you guys yesterday. I'm staying faaaar from reddit's r/all and other general social media areas. Took one look at a low rated comment looking for new updates, it's exactly that. If you voted for Trump you're literally hitler, if you voted for Hillary you're also hitler, if you voted for Harambe/Giant Meteor you're wasting everyone's time.
And it's stuff like this that makes people not want to vote next time; might as well save the headache right? It still baffles me the US votes in the middle of the week while Brazil has a sunday holiday and you're always located to the nearest school with quick and easy electronic voting machines.

You have to vote but you can also vote blank/no number with just a flick of a button. And it's 1h of a sunday at the most, which you can use until late afternoon. I don't remember well if people are even allowed to work then, but either way, they at least make it easy and some sort of incentive since it's quick and hassle free. An election in the middle of the week, with huge lines and all this drama, people will feel like voting less and less.
(An almost missed bus later) And that's the thing, our politics are real bad, corrupt, and full of asskissing. We usually look up to US elections, and after the first debate, everyone's jaw was on the floor at how much they got away with stuff that are usually instant mic cuts in here, even for the dumbest of the dumbest mayoral(?) elections, or some of these ads that would and have disqualified candidates before.

I've been doing a lot of silver lining searching these past 18 or so hours. Results are mixed but there's both elements to fear and elements to possibly be hopeful for. Unfortunately even those hopeful things mostly come down to "these next four years will be uneventful". That's not something you should look forward to.
Quote: Robo-Spyro
If either of the third party candidates got 5% of the popular vote, they would have a larger budget and platform to speak on for future elections. Unfortunately both Johnson and Stein failed to reach that threshold. |
