It makes me happy that more girls play video games nowadays than when I was younger. I feel like it was a lot less socially accepted for girls to play video games back then.

Now we just need more video games that actually star girls. I don't think there's ever been single non-indie developed 3D platformer to star a girl, for instance.

To add to these, while they weren't the player character, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us had female characters with hugely important roles that drove the plot forward. In Infinite's case Elizabeth was arguably more important than Booker.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate also had two protagonists one of which was female, and Liberation was just a lone female.

I dunno, I like female characters in my games because it's easier to identify with(most of the time, I don't mean Embodiment of Tumblr that you find in many indie games), but I'm fine without them if the story calls for someone else. Though I know feels>reals for several people so they DO want female protags just to feel good about themselves at the expense of everyone else.

Late into this, but, when I hear "gamer girl", I basically think of D. Va. I mean, girls with this kinda look/personality, but less exaggerated.

Idk man, I've encountered so many people while playing online who immediately turn into creeps as soon as they find out you're a girl who likes gaming.

Usually "where do you live?", "what do you look like?", "are you hot?" and "can I have your kik/snapchat?" are the questions I get asked in no less than five minutes of someone finding out.

Topic probs ain't serious in the slightest but eh, thought I'd throw in my experiences.

Once I was playing CS:GO and immediately upon the woman speaking into her mic she had at least one guy making repeated sexual jokes at her. It's a serious problem.

Yes they can mute them or ignore them, but the problem still lies that the assholes shouldn't be assholes in the first place. Muting them ignores the real problem and doesn't truly solve it. So a girl is playing the game, so ****ing what, doesn't mean they have to act like a sexist pig.

I can't see why treat girls that play video games like that. You know, like what CAV said. I mean, sure, being attracted to someone with similar tastes is common and acceptable. But, the way some people treat the girls... It's about respect in a general sense.

i agree with bifrost, people are going to go for whats easiest to target regardless if you are female, have an accent, are a different race, etc
besides that it has improved significantly over the past few years, its much easier to see some guy torment another for their race than for their gender

It still did the job of digging up some bad sites and people, but eventually people realized their audience will read clikbait centrals/overly biased reviews because it's easy to find and parrot, not because they actually want the best articles. Nowadays looking at some comments section of GamerGate threads it's just mocking quotes of the usual suspects' twitters (because twitter totes doesn't have mountains of stupid SJW posts as is :I ), and not much that's relevant.

the exact same thing happened with the new ghostbusters (which PROVED that girls can make middle of the road, disappointing reboot fodder just as well as the guys can), when sites either put the movie on a pedestal for its all female cast, or slammed it for that same reason
they really should have done their ****ing jobs as reviewers and been impartial from the get go, instead of hyping or slamming an okay movie at best

but even with those two, you see a ridiculous amount of bias in straight up news, since just about every reporter injects their views into what should be regular old news

This is true but those swears may be based more on you playing badly (or playing so well you make him salty), whereas with women it comes to them based almost entirely on their sexual organs.

The problem is when you're playing a team based game like CS:GO where communication is key to victory. And while leaving a server will solve the problem temporarily, the fact is women are much more likely to be harassed online than men and leaving one server to join another can just exchange one jackass for another.

Putting on the big pants is one thing yeah but when the others forget about the game they're playing in favor of sexually harassing you, you start to get pissed regardless.
And in the case of real life esports, never forget the Cross Assault woman in the SFxT tournament who got harassed so much by her team captain (IRL) that she walked off the game and quit.

For TF2, it's the flipside, most guys on the servers I play on actually respect girls who talk on the mic.
