Too big of a chance of the gorilla falling on the kid or thrashing around as it gets tranquilized - heck, it was obvious he had no intention of harming the kid, but gorillas don't really get that a toddler is going to break faster than its own kind. It was a horrible option for the zookeepers because the moment the kid got into that situation there was no exit other than to kill him outright, which created the big discussions, and the whole ironic martyrdom for Harambe.

A tranquilizer could have been potentially dangerous. It would have taken time to take effect on such a large animal. It probably would have angered him which could have caused him to kill the child. I personally wish there could have been a way around it, but in the time they had with the situation presented before them, they made the right decision.

Iirc, it was neglect from the parents because it took a LOT of time for the kid to fall down there. It's been long enough and a lot of jokes drown out what I first read.
