hey guys i know this is a stupid thing to post in s&n but i've gotten help here before so here we go
memes are also welcome here because i do need a good laugh right now

so for a long while now i've been really self-doubting about my art, i'll usually find a bunch of flaws and just trash it, and for a while i've been going with the thought process of just "oh yeah most artists go through this so this is normal", but lately i've been beginning to question that, because my doubt seems to be at a much higher level than most people's, like i'll just ruin one thing and then i'll get super depressed and just cry for an hour or so just beating myself up over one ruined thing of art and it really gets to me.

so i need to ask, to all the artists here; is it normal to get that depressed over your own "bad" art? and is there an actual way to stop being so self-doubting, because it's getting in the way of a lot of things.

i think you are letting negative thoughts control you too much

i'm not really an artist but what i think i can advise is that when you notice those mistakes, note them and practice a bit. it will help prevent the smae mistake in the future and thus improve your artistic capabilities. it sounds like it would be a very strong way to move forward with your art talents.

here's a happy meme picture to pick your spirits up:

An artist will always find flaws in theri work, even if they aren't there to begin with. It's perfectly fine to see problems with it.

Nobody else sees the flaws so much, I bet if you posted your art here people would give you positive feedback. I will be willing to give you some concrit if you want as well.

Also I heard someone do a good comparison. I believe it went to not compare your art to others. Since the stuff you see online is the highlight reel, and you are comparing their highlight reel to your behind-the-scenes.

also forgot to mention: don't think of mistakes as something bad. think of them as a way to improve. this applies to everything, not even just art. if you go about it with more enthusiasm rather than putting yourself down you will more than likely see more results and not have the occasional hour of throwing yourself in the dirt. mistakes are natural and a huge part of improvement. good luck friend.

i'll try, and thanks

and that's a pretty good analogy for art comparison, at least in my case, since i don't post a lot of my art

I don't really draw so it's not a direct relation but I definitely understand. There's a wasteland of FLS files with only about 8 or so files anywhere near something resembling a full track because I keep starting something only to hate it or not have any idea of where to go with it.

You are your own worst critic and even when you feel like you've ironed out all the kinks you could under your best ability, you will still find an assortment of flaws and problems and you'll hate your work all over again. It's an "every other day" thing here. But instead of seeing that and using it as a reason to feel you aren't talented and quit, use that as motivation to get better.

Look back on your past work from years or even months ago and compare it to what you've done most recently. Chances are you're going to see a mark of improvement, which in on itself will show that you're constantly getting better. How to not have that self doubt and hatred of your own work is something I'm not sure of myself (and it's a struggle daily), but knowing you're not simply stagnating could prove comforting. Or at least, it sometimes does for me.

Though honestly, my way of being motivated is "be productive by any means necessary" and self loathing until I reach a ridiculously high standard, so I'm not the one that should be talking.

There's also this video that may help more.

As the others say, you're always your worst critic. There's not once piece of art that I don't go "ugh, if I had worked off my ass more it'd be like I imagined", but over time I learned A- people who didn't work on it only know the final result and love it and B- you'll regret working yourself to the bone later.
As an example, a piece of promotional work I did the other week. I wanted it to look exactly 100% my idea for it, and had the stupid ass idea of working on it 8 hours straight only stopping for a few minutes so my hands wouldn't tire, and those breaks were studying anatomy. Didn't get 100% what I wanted, they loved it, sure, and the next day I couldn't look at a pen and for two days couldn't work on **** and got even more furstrated.
Come last week, did another piece at my own pace with tons of breaks to look away from it, they loved it exactly the same because it looked very dynamic, I didn't burn myself out.
Your art is always a bit better than what you think, not kidding.

I'm kinda in that funk too- my style is changing, I think, and it's in a transition phase where I've pretty much been doing different things with every picture and hate how inconsistent it all is. But still, I'd recommend doing what the others said, and especially keep drawing! Continue practicing the things that you believe need improvement. I remember drawing cat's paws over and over, whether there was a cat attached or not. smilie

For that one it mostly comes down to just sticking yourself in there and using tutorials every now and then to slowly figure out what everything does. I still don't know my DAW all the way through and probably never will.

Also depends on the DAW you use. Some are more user friendly than others.

I think a lot a peoples points are very well thought out, and I don't want rehash the same point. You may be giving yourself to much grief. I think your art is really good.

I myself am very critical of my own art. I always look back on it and I wish I did it better and it came out the way I wanted. I'm even worse about color, I can't even bring myself to color because I want it perfect. So you did an excellent job coloring, I applaud you.
