Does grammar reflect intelligence? [CLOSED]

I personally don't believe one should be attacked for having bad grammar/spelling as a sign of stupidity. Grammar and spelling doesn't reflect intelligence because you aren't applying knowledge to fix a problem but remembering how symbols go together. Having great grammar and spelling shows that one has the ability to copy others' work which isn't what being intelligent is. Being intelligent is being able to use your imagination and intellect to solve problems showing skill. Knowing that two plus two doesn't make one intelligent as it is just a muscle memory knowing that fact. However knowing how to react to a problem such as finding the square root of four multiplied by nine and knowing how to find your answer by applying prior knowledge shows intelligence in my opinion.

Not at all.

any person can throw around words like herbalism and leister when in reality i just gesture typed those and i purposely used no capitalization and punctuation because i need a distinguishing trait between me being serious and me being a jackass unless already obvious or i am just lazy also this is a run on sentence

Attacking somebody's grammar is like calling them a Nazi. It means your argument is so crap that you need to find an arbitrary reason to "prove" that the other person is wrong so that your own piss weak arguments won't come into question. Goldwin's Law 2.0

Bad grammar makes it harder to read, but I wouldn't find a reason to correct it unless it was in a roleplay post or if it's so bad that it's painful to read.

Attacking someone for grammar isn't the right attitude at all and it doesn't really have much to do with intelligence on its own, but if everyone's typing semi-formally and you're like 'kek il fight u ovr nite' on the same thread the impression is that you're lazy and uncaring. It just expresses for everyone else that you can't be bothered to even be in the same level of conversation and is probably only doing it for internet points.

No, especially not if someone is bilingual and not as fluent as a native speaker in a language.

While I don't mind poor grammar in verbal conversation, I can't say the same for writing. It's hard to take people seriously when they write with poor grammar.

This, and the same goes for regional colloquialisms that interfere with sentence structure (such as "y'all" and "ain't" down here in the South).

Personally, unless it's hard to understand the meaning, I think grammar is fine being poor. I however, do think, everyone that is natively English speaking should know your/you're, to/too/two, there/their/they're, and other similar cases. Grammar itself in other cases, as long as the point is able to be understood, is irrelevant.

Poor grammar doesn't reflect a person's intelligence at all, especially if English isn't their native language. Good grammar doesn't reflect a person's intelligence either. I don't ever attack someone for poor grammar in everyday conversation (as long as what they're trying to say is still obvious). I do get a little irate when there's blatantly poor grammar in a story or a game or something, especially if it's a paid product; it's not hard to find proofreaders who would check your grammar for free (hell, I'd do that).

I do have a reputation around my family as being a grammar nazi tho

No, poor grammar doesn't reflect one's intelligence.

Of course, it sure does make them look stupid on the Internet....

..Or is that just me?

but yeah, for all we know the person with crappy grammar could very well be more than the unintelligent "simpleton" that you think they are.

People should strive for proper spelling and grammar for the sake of being easier to understand, but no, poor grammar isn't necessarily a sign of stupidity or anything. It's just a skill that some people have practiced for a long time and that other people lack or choose not to use, depending on the situation.

I mean I'll use crappy grammar and such as an attempt to indicate sarcasm sometimes, for example.

IMO, If your at least over fifteen, you should have good grammar outside of this forum. If not, I wouldn't call you unintelligent, but I would correct you.
