And in other news, the sky is blue!
Did anyone really expect Clinton to not win at this point? I wanted Bernie, too, but I know that it was a pie in the sky dream. |

No, this is just for the democratic nomination. So it'll be Trump vs Clinton unless a third party candidate steps in (which would probably be Gary Johnson) |

So now you get to pick a lesser of two evils.
To be honest for over a month now I've just been in the acceptance phase of a Trump presidency. I don't see how he doesn't win now. The vast majority of younger voters aren't going to vote now that Sanders is gone, which allows the typically more conservative right wing older crowd to dominate and bring in the Republican. Johnson isn't going anywhere. Third parties never do anything with this voting system. |

The president is elected by the people directly, aren't they? If so I don't think Clinton has a hope in hell of winning, even against Trump. I mean, they're both idiots, but Trump is a charismatic idiot where as Clinton is just an idiot.
Not that it matters because either way you as the public are gonna have a bad time. |

Nope, they're chosen by the electoral college. So I'm not really sure how much of a difference our votes make.

Basically none. But it's a bad idea to get apathetic. That's what happened down here. Everybody knew the Darwin Labor Leader was going to get in, so nobody voted... Then the Liberal Leader got in and ****ed everything up because that's all Liberals are good for. |

Apathy is part of what allowed Clinton to beat Sanders to begin with. Apathy and "lol he won't go far" is how Trump ended up going from a joke to a legitimate presidential candidate. And apathy is what may give Trump that presidency.
Our voting system is ****ed and the electoral college seems worse than direct democracy where we vote ourselves (problems explained here), but apathy doesn't really fix it. Though I can't talk much, since I don't like either candidate and am wondering if I really want to vote for either of them. |

The thing that pisses me off the most is the superdelegate bull****. How in the world is it that a party that calls itself the "Democratic" party can advocate such an inherently undemocratic system like superdelegates and yet still be able to sleep at night? They're free to vote however they wish because they're unpledged, and they do have enough power to sway a primary to nominate a candidate that didn't even get the popular vote...
Oh, and here's a nice little tidbit from former Governor and superdelegate Howard Dean that showcases exactly what's wrong with the system: "Super delegates don't 'represent people.' I'm not elected by anyone. I'll do what I think is right for the country." Yes, that's true democracy alright. A bunch of unelected, arrogant pricks who do not have the will of the people in mind and instead will do whatever they personally think is "best for the country." But yeah, I really despise Clinton. I wish third parties had more of a pull in our system because I hate the idea of President Trump too. I believe voting is an important responsibility so I'll probably vote and go for the slightly lesser evil (which is Trump, imo). Quote: darkwolf
Well, with the electoral college, it certainly is possible to have a candidate win but yet not have the popular vote. A good example is George W. Bush's election in 2000. But that doesn't happen often, so I'd say our votes still make a big difference. I would still vote, if you can.

And not to mention the media counts all these super delegates for Hillary and is just like "oh, she has all those" when they could still change their mind. Because not counting super delegates, I think Sanders is only 300 behind her or so. But by showing her with all the super delegates, it just makes it look like she's winning by far more than she has, because every one of those super delegates could suddenly change their mind and go for Bernie (Of course, that isn't going to happen, but still).

That's true; without the bull****, she and Sanders are pretty close in delegates. Hillary (and the media) just loves counting her chickens before they hatch... Besides, iirc, some superdelegates are already switching to Sanders, or at least said that they will if he wins the Democratic primaries in California (Source). Unfortunately, it might not make a huge difference, but at least Sanders is giving Clinton a run for her money and Clinton isn't just getting the nomination handed over to her unopposed like she thought she was at first because "it's her turn."

It's times like these that Brazil's system of obligatory vote - on a weekend, at a time most stores don't open anyway - actually shows how we won't know what we have until someone changes it away. But pick your poison, since our government is even worse.

That's literally what I say in every one of these topics and people keep telling me to shut up because it'll never happen. Well contrary to the way the media is TRYING to spin it (that Republicans are fragmenting while Democrats fall in line), the exact opposite is true. Republicans are supporting Drumpf now because they're that desperate for someone from their party ticket to be president, while the Democrats remained broken between overly-idealistic Sanders (whose younger supporters sound like communists, and that's terrifying) and "Had this been earlier in the 2000's she could run on the Republican ticket" Clinton. I don't care how "lesser of evils" people think Drumpf is. A man like that does NOT deserve control over our armed forces and, more importantly, our nuclear weapons under ANY circumstance. And if he does, he should not be allowed to have the final say on these decisions. If he is elected, I advocate that he be nothing more than a figurehead and the roles of the presidency be "outsourced" to people with actual expertise in those areas (e.g. a competent Secretary of State with a good foreign relations background should make our international policy, not Drumpf). The fact that the leader of North Korea thinks he'd make a good president should raise a million red flags for everyone... but it's not going to. Oh and let's not forget that independent economic experts estimate that, under Drumpf's economic plan, his middle/lower-middle class supporters are the ones most likely to be screwed over. And knowing Drumpf, he'll be ready to peg a scapegoat. Right now it's immigrants and Muslims, but I could easily see that escalating. It gives off vibes of Germany in the early 1930s. AND THAT'S EXTREMELY TERRIFYING.

Sanders was more left wing, liberal and closer to what you could describe as an "SJW" than Clinton (though not by that much). Clinton mostly just uses the fact that she's female to her advantage to those who want to see the first female president. Quote: Iganagor
North Korea can barely get those nukes off the ground. No way they're flying halfway around the world to hit us any time soon and it's more likely that America nukes them first under a Trump presidency (which also isn't quite that likely?). Quote: HIR
The reason people didn't talk lesser of two evils until now is because Sanders was still in the race. Sanders was seen as the paragon and lawful good to Clinton's lawful evil and Trump's chaotic evil. Agree or disagree with his policies and ideas but he was honest in what he stood for. Trump also is brutally honest in what he stands for and pulls no punches as well, but Sanders will obviously appeal more since his ideals are to benefit the little people (particularly those college aged people like me) while Trump rambles on in attack after attack. Comparatively, Clinton is seen as pure establishment and just a continuation of the same old lying politician trope that we've seen for decades, especially when she promises to continue Obama's ideas and the right wing people here can't stand Obama's guts. Both Sanders and Trump supporters despise each other and that's become clear with terms like "Bernie Bro" and the loud protests in places where Trump appears. But they both have a uniform enemy in the "establishment", which Clinton so readily represents more than probably any other candidate we had this entire race. That's another reason why Trump can secure the presidency. While most of Sanders' supporters will just stay home and not vote at all, some of them may actually vote Trump just to spite Clinton. EDIT: Taken from r/politics. It's already happening: ![]() And on the issue of Sanders' supporters sounding like communists, they really just sound like socialists considering that's what Sanders himself is. And his policies and ideas speak loudly to those little people since they're often in the lower class or at the poverty line, where something like equal distribution from socalism and communism will support them most. Clinton on the other hand seems like more of the same which doesn't benefit them, while Trump's ideas like you said could destroy them entirely. So the "everyone is equal big corporations are evil" stuff ends up appealing a lot to them, and appealed to me as someone who dislikes the pseudo-monopolies many corporations have today. Quote: QueenChrysalis
That's why the US voting system sucks. CGP Grey is really good for these things. |
