ive been inactive but im just gonna post this cus idc lol i wanna show you guys

nearly two months ago i posted about me getting a betta fish named shirley. two weeks after getting her, on february 17th-18th (it was around midnight), she passed away from something very fatal called dropsy (which, in a nutshell, is organ failure caused by things like bacteria or parasites). dropsy appeared without any warning and i couldn't treat her in time. i got her from petsmart and, knowing them, i know it wasn't my fault she got it. SIP. i really loved her, so, so much.

not long after she passed away i got another betta from a more reputable place. i've had him for a over a month and his name is judas. i wanted to show you guys the difference of one month because i think it's really cool and plus i want people to admire my child lol.

this is what he looked like when i first got him:

and this is what he looks like now:

and i know that his color change is so drastic is because he has the marble gene but marbling and the brightness of colors are influenced by environment. he came in the standard pet store container in cold water and likely had poor diet. in that environment he probably never would've been able to achieve the colors he has right now. it also really shows how much a proper home can transform any kind of animal and it makes me so happy because i know i'm giving him a good life. i can tell he's healthy and happy and im so proud.

i don't wanna sound like im bragging or anything im just really excited to show the progress

not all fish. some fish do go under minor color changes as they age or when they're in certain environments. for bettas, it's normal for that to happen. they can have really drastic color changes.
bettas get brighter colors when they're healthy and in a good environment. in judas's case, he has a gene called marbling where he goes under drastic color changes and i think it ceases when he's fully grown. marbling is influenced by good health and environment as well.

I'm sorry to hear about Shirley :c

But Judas is really cute!

its ok, and ty <33

im actually very certain his blue is going to take over his entire body. he's labeled as a koi betta but i know he isn't a true one.
it started off with just two blue scales but now it's taking over everything haha i can still pray he keeps some of his red and white
he has like 6 more months to finish marbling so god knows what he's gonna turn out to look like if he's made this much progress in a month

it's not that uncommon for "koi" bettas to turn out into something completely different
