Alright, I'll bite. Will someone who is unbiased (or who can at least pretend to be for a bit) explain this entire "Gamergate" thing to me?
I've been avoiding it up until now, but with the new Hulk Hogan thing I figure it'll be blowing up again.

Didn't we have a mod mentioning this would be best left out of the forum? Been a while.

I'll link from the Hulk Hogan thing. There's the "journalist" site Gawker, which lives off of clickbait, and got themselves screwed with that sex tape(also attempting to dox Trump this week). They're affiliated with several other journalist sites that constantly paint gamers as evil mysoginists that only know to harm women and carry out violent fantasies in video games. They also constantly get paid to give positive game reviews or give negative reviews based on crazy subjective reasoning(Kotaku gave Bayonetta 2 negatives for being too sexualized, BECAUSE YEAH I WONDER WHAT THAT GAME'S THEME IS). This obviously pissed people off, with some specific game dev whose name is better left out sleeping with some game journalists for good reviews being what broke the camel's back.

That's at least the nutshell version. People inside, outside, against, in favor of, or on the fence take this to so many places, reasonably or excessively, that nowadays it's actually just a huge mess. One side will tell you the other is morally wrong but you can be sure that there's bad apples spoiling the argument all around.

Other than Gawker being the parent company of Kotaku I have no idea what the Hulk Hogan saga has to do with Gamergate.

^basically, gamergate people (understandably) hate gawker tho cause they own kotaku, which started the whole gamergate thing in the first place and which is why some gamergate people have probably got involved again

Wait gamergate and that Hulk Hogan sex tape thing are connected? I only ever heard of the sex tape because the DJ whose wife Hulk banged is from around where I live so I hear him sometimes on the radio.

The only connection is that Gawker, the company that leaked the tape, is also the owner of Kotaku. So with Hogan getting a massive amount of damages that can put Gawker under I guess some people are happy because no Gawker = no Kotaku/Kotaku under new management.

For the record Gawker is pretty awful in on itself. It called people disgusting for viewing/spreading those female celebrity nudes that came out a couple of years ago, but all this time didn't want to take down Hogan's tape because they thought it was funny and the world needed to know it.
