Legalize it because it's pathetic to ruin someone's life and waste taxpayer's money jailing someone for something as minor as possessing something that is not as dangerous or as addictive as legal tobacco.
I don't use it or intend to so I have no personal stakes in this I just think that's stupid. |

If they're not going to outright legalize its recreational use (to a reasonable degree) then they should lessen the penalties for using it illegally.
That said, keep it away from me. >____>

Actually if you smoked marijuana at the same rate as the average cigarette smoker it would be substantially worse for your health. But no one ever does that, so really the only thing coming into play is the mild hallucinogenic effects. The worst thing about it is that it's a gateway drug. Its use can lead to use (and/or abuse) of much more damaging and highly illegal drugs.

There's really no actual, logical reason that it should be illegal.
What someone else does with their body/their health shouldn't be any concern to anyone. Also, cigarettes and alcohol aren't natural, marijuana is. It's literally just a plant. It's the same thing as eating unhealthy food. Bad for your health, but people like it. If you believe in keeping marijuana illegal, you should also be an advocate for banning all processed foods. |

Probably the strongest argument I've heard behind it is the "give them an inch, and they'll take a foot" reasoning; that if marijuana is legalized, it won't be long until people start advocating for the legalization of harder stuff, like cocaine and meth. Quote: Cynderfan507
I've also heard this. In my experience, most people who tout the medicinal benefits of marijuana are just stoners who want an excuse for it to be legal. |

That's because the people who actually use it for medical purposes are extremely sick (like, on chemotherapy for aggressive cancer) so of course they're not going to attend rallies and write the local news stations and government.

Legalize it and only make it available to those with a prescription from a doctor. It has even been suggested that marijuana can kill cancer cells, sure it hasn't been proven as such but it has worked on rats. Not only that but it can help those with a terminal illness to cope with the pain.

This used to be the case in California. Often, there would be places where people could pick up "prescriptions" from "doctors" in dark buildings near or beneath the weed stores. |

My point being that legalizing it for those with a prescription would be to ensure that the marijuana that those with a prescription receive would be clean as the government would be able to regulate it. So under the current law, if someone who was ill wanted marijuana to cope, they will get it illegally and then there is the risk of it being contaminated with a virus. |

There's been no rational arguments as to why it should be illegal, or only available with a prescription. "It's bad for people, I dun liek it". So are processed foods, cancer causing sugar substitutes, no exercising, driving a vehicle, tanning, and plenty of other things we do on a daily basis.

It's probably not going to "destroy you" but marijauana is a gateway drug, meaning that if you're smoking weed, you might start doing other drugs. meth use has gone up significantly since weed was legalized in colorado. While the article itself says noting, the chart says everything. After 2012, it goes up. I'm not saying that everyone falls within the same group, but the connection is still there. "But Paris, you said you wanted it legalized!" Not necessarily. I basically said "I don't care." Mostly because I'm really middle of the road on this issue. Though I'm leaning towards don't legalize it, because I've seen the long term effects. For example, someone who smoked weed when they were younger has a terrible short term memory now. Weed does have an effect on you, it might not be that life threatening, but the damage is still there.

I'd rather all drugs be legal to some degree, or at least I'd rather that possession of drugs could not lead to jail time. I hate the idea of people going to jail when they did nothing to anyone except themselves. Regulate drug distribution, tax them, punish the hell out of people who actually do bad things while on them, but stop throwing people in jail just because of drug possession. It's stupid and wastes tax money.

Personally, I didn't state my reasoning as I don't really like discussing my full political views on things like this and just wanted to state my opinion and be done with it. However, since you brought it up, I'll post my full thoughts on the matter. It may not be as bad as other things, but it's still not exactly good for you (granted what is), unless you have a doctor specifically telling you what amount, how often, and how to use it. I already don't approve of alcohol and cigarettes and want nothing to do with either as I've watched my father become a complete asshole from both all through my life. It does have hallucinogenic properties which means if it is legal, then people will likely become less likely that people will stick to doing it in the privacy of their own home and next thing you know we'll be seeing ads for "No smoking and driving" like we do with texting. Hell, the roads are already unsafe as it is, like we really need people seeing slightly twisted reality behind the wheel. (again back to me having an issue with alcohol) Of course there is the generic argument of more people will likely be prone to do it if it's legal as there are some people who would but don't due to not wanting legal trouble. It may not be ass addictive as other drugs, but you can't seriously tell me it isn't addictive at all. As for regulating it, is that seriously going to work in a proper and effective way that is happy for everyone? You'll still have dealers that aren't selling in an agreed and organized way as that is still revenue for drug dealers that why the hell would they give up? It just means they could and likely would be a bit more open about growing it. All it takes is a neighbor to not put out a cigarette properly before throwing it over the fence and next thing you know the whole block is high thanks to one guy's back yard. I did have a guy in the room next to mine in my apartment that smoked it. That **** stinks like crazy. I could still smell it and it made my eyes water through both of our doors being closed. That's just an unkind inconvenience to anyone nearby who doesn't want to smoke it. I am perfectly fine with it staying illegal, but on the chance it does become legal, I'll just scowl at whatever article I see this news in then go on about my life. It's not like I'm going to rally and fight to have it go back to being illegal.

Did drugs being illegal prevent it? Or just make her life harder because she had access to worse quality drugs and risked going to jail? Addicts need help, not jail time.

Well, it's a complex issue that needs a complex solution. I'm not saying we should give all drug production and distribution free reign. I'm just saying our current method of punishing users and addicts is crap.

Really, why won't we ban ****ing tobacco instead, it's not beneficial in ANY way. EVERYTHING about tobacco is bad. What a shame that the money is involved, otherwise they might have actually done it. |
