I know I'm not one to talk as I started with Awakening, but the anime in Fates feels really over the top and out of place for an FE game. Because of that, I don't think it'll have serious tones at all. It'll be to focused on "ZOMG SHIPPING!!!" I understand that Awakening had a marriage system, but it didn't really feel like it got in the way of the serious tones and the gameplay. That could be because I'm hearing more about anime babes and nothing about core mechanics.

Not only this but all the drama surrounding Fates just really pushes me away from wanting it at all.

Awakening got me interested in the rest of the series, but I think I'll be skipping Fates for now.
