Of course, I'm not surprised at all by this. I was certain it was going to be like this, just as I'm sure everybody else was, but now it's official: Skylanders 6, Fall 2016, developed by Toys for Bob. Seeing how they're competing with Disney and Lego and they have this TV series coming up, why would they stop now? While Eon may not have said it in Superchargers, "The journey with your Skylanders is only just beginning..."

Yeah, that's good news even of it was already heavily implied.
Only one thing: I believe that when Eon says that he refers to the current game and its replayability, not to future titles. The reason why he didn't said it in SuperChargers is probably because they thought it would have been better if he didn't said something like "The races with your vehicles have only just begun".

Fingers crossed the Crash reappearances applies to Skylanders. I'd be livid as a Spyro fan if Crash comes back on his own. He need to join Spyro once again!

Right before they announced what Trap Team was I vowed that I would not play Skylanders if they created a game that encompassed a feature that had vehicles.
I went ahead and got it any, bought every single figure, but am still disappointed. I wanted to fight and find cool soul gems and hats through out all of Skylands. Instead, I rang bells and drove through yellow hoops. I just want a stellar game, without any crazy gimmick....but I know this will not happen. They could make awesome new characters 2 per element and not a whole bunch of variants and then create a game off of what has been made before. It is obvious that the gimmick for each game dies within its own title of existance and I am hoping for the same with Superchargers!! TFB needs to bring us back to the basic roots. Make it a little more difficult and bring back the gates!! |

TFB ruined it by making those Trap Team only gates. How disrespectful to our healthy collections!
I've accepted Skylanders as being what it is: a cute money grab with no plot. A game that takes it back to Spyro's Advetnure would be welcome though... Also welcome? Them not dropping special function for the previous gimmick. Have the Giants do their Giant business like push heavy rock formations, have a Swap Force do their Swap Ability, have Trap Team do some bs with "traptanium" like they do and then have special courses to race for the vehicles. (Sidenote, I think the trapped villains were handled well but the adventure pack pieces should have unlocked courses) It really wouldn't be that hard and if they're going to claim "but not everyone will have figures to complete it!", honey that's the biggest bs. Not everyone wanted to buy all the Trap Masters but the elemental gates became exclusive for them. Not to mention they could really just have insignificant rewards like old hats locked behind them or even just some extra loot for our Skylanders. |

The confirmation its in development makes me think it will get revealed at toy fair this weekend especially with so little left for superchargers... And it's so called failure this could bring back hype because Disney infinity still has characters to be announced and I mean that not just released so skylanders would get all the hype

I'll call it first, Sky 6 will be called "Skylanders Academy". LOL Actually I thought that they would name it after the cartoon the day that they officially mentioned the cartoon series was in production. Still, I fear a reboot and no backwards compatibility though. I just hope no further revised gameplay to make it even more unlike what I love about the series.

Same. I cannot even describe how much hope I have for this game, and I don't care if it's so much it will end up disappointing me even if it will turn out to be amazing. After a great game but an incredibly disappointing experience I simply want what TfB can do better. Nothing more. I don't fear for stupid and forced gimmicks, I don't fear for a reboot and I don't fear for a lackluster toyline. Not with them. Not after three games and experiences I absolutely loved. Too much faith in them? Don't care. I simply can't wait for Skylanders 6.

Too much faith in them? Yes Am I just as hyped as you are? Not JUST yet. I'd like to see an announcement first to see what we're getting. I love bot VV and TfB equally but have preferences for both (VV game-play and art style) TfB (Toy lines and cast size) I feel like me prefering TfB for cast sizes might be a bit of a poor reason because VV gave us the best cast in the series next to TT and I''m sure we'll get a SF/TT sized cast from them in Sky 7, but SSC's cast, while awesome and amazingly well designed, is too small. I'm sure they tried to find a good balance and not make it overwhelming at TT's toy line. I don't blame VV for it I highly doubt they're were running out of ideas. If anything, I could see Acti telling them to cut a bunch of characters after the backlash of TT's what 60+ toys.

Another thing I'm hoping for is someone to keep an eye on Lorne Balfe. Someone reviewed the soundtrack, and I do agree the songs in SC were good but just lost the Skylanders identity entirely - heck,it's even more Dreamworksy than Swap Force's aesthetics; he doesn't bring that up often since the tracks I have mind aren't actually in the Soundtrack(for the love of god Acti learn the definition of soundtrack already) but the actual Cluck's Chicken HQ and Vault of the Ancients definately. And then there's Supercharged with Love.

It's the selection, not the songs themselves. Since the first one he's been harping on how Acti slaps 15 random songs and calls it a day and the scores have just been gradually lowering(ok he reviewed all that in one week),and SC particularly got on his nerves for having Cluck's jingle taking a spot in a 10 dollar "soundtrack".
I'd definately be mad too since those 10 dollars are tons more expensive to me. I'll just keep on supporting newkill's(you're the one working on it,aren't you newkill? Might've forgotten already) soundtrack rip channel because at least he knows how to showcase great and not so great songs.

I wouldn't say I'm "hyped". That will be influenced by infos and trailers or gameplay videos. As of now I just have full faith in them, that's all, exactly like I was rather skeptical when SuperChargers had yet to be announced. I agree, both teams have their strenghts and their weaknesses but I have no problem admitting I personally undoubtedly prefer TfB, because all their games have left me completely satisfied. Can't say the same about SWAP Force and SuperChargers. And yes, I know Activision somehow likes to screw things up but once again I look at facts. 1 out of 3 TfB games suffered from serious distribution and concept (Traptanium Elemental Gates) problems. 1 out of 2 V.V. games is a complete mess when it comes to the toys, marketing and distribution and let's not talk about the vehicles' role. Were they just extremely unlucky to have all those wonderful ideas in that game...? Don't know, could be, but I have to look at what I have and not what I could have had. So yeah, I think TfB could (and will) bring things back to what they should be. Absolutely personal opinion of course. Agree about the soundtrack. Great songs but most of them didn't captured the mood of the series. Can't complain really, though.

Sonic Boom went the same way with both games and pilot in the same event,so yeah it's possible.
Just... Leave the similarities at that. It's just 6 games and a goldmine of lore and ways to start anew(SF already did it even as a way to remove most of the recurring cast), no need for hip and cool reboot.

If vehicles were their "best", then I'm not really feeling it for anymore entries. Everyone remember how everyone was buzzing here during Giants about Swap Force in the Feb/Mar timeframe? I think the earlier we are with an announcement, the more confident they are in next year's idea. i suspect they will play chicken with the other entries and make us wait until June.

They'll probably play chicken even if their idea is good. Acti is the one making decisions instead of TFB,and they might have lost confidence enough to not even care if it's a perfect toy integrating concept.

I would like that too. I always found locks and keys fascinating for the designs, variations and the concepts. Maybe a lock based Skylander who either throws keys and can lock enemies while fighting. This character could be of the tech element obviously or maybe the dark element for a more psychological aspect of locking up enemies.

No disrespect to TfB but I don't really have the confidence they'll make a game I don't roll my eyes at while playing story mode but I will probably be interested in a lot now figures than I expect. Considering the non-existent story of Giants and the attempt-of-a-better-story-but-ultimately-a-Giants-retread that is Trap Team, I'd say it was an Oscar worthy script (also, stating any entry of Skylanders as having an "immature" story is a bit like saying the sky looks blue). Alas, I must wait to play SC so I won't be able to compare it to SF but, either way, you don't actually say anything that contradicts my post... |
Bifrost Prismatic Sparx Gems: 10370 |
#38 Posted: 15:30:08 15/02/2016
Ok, you might be exaggerating there. Giants' story was very much shonen arc but it was a story - journey across the land, meet a bunch of weirdos. Trap Team was very saturday morning cartoon-y - capture the evil guys after a several episode--I mean chapter arc. Just because things happen predictably doesn't mean it's instantly bad; if the characters do a lot of things, have some developments, and show some varied humor, it's great fun to follow. Best example I can find is Ermit; he's one-note at first being paranoid and all,but he has 2 other secret lines every level if you talk to him again and he'll go into other stuff, like mentioning events he remembers, places you're going to he knows about, and generally being very knowledgeable though bitter. You care, in a word.
SF is immature in that it relies HEAVILY on gimmick characters. X NPC burps when he's scared - that's all he does. Another is a coward - that's his entire 'joke'. Kaos' Mother is literally Kaos but 'overbearing', so much she doesn't get to have her own name. Wood people are firemen, ha ha look they'll end up dying on a fire eventually, that's all there is to them. There's no development, no reason to care about any of these people, because they're walking gimmicks and cardboard that could be replaced with any design in the end of the day. Kaos is the worst offender - he's a child depiste previous games implying he's well over adult years. He throws tantrums, has petty demands(which is out of character after TT once you find out he considers pettiness to be under him and ambition and over-the-top presentation to be the only way to act evil), he is the laughingstock, you kinda start to wonder why he's a threat to anyone; because in SSA and Giants you had this psychopath that tries to kill your Skylander on sight and would later go on to try kill YOU on sight. In here, he sends minions to do anything, obviously fails, obviously has a funny moment where he acts like he's 5. It's immature because there's no decent effort in the plot to begin with, so no attachment. SC is a complete 180° and as always, David showed that in the comics leading up to it that he learned characters can be more than cardboard. Kaos is threatening though goofy; you want to avoid him but you also kinda root for him to do something funny while he's at it. NPCs are sometimes gimmicky, but sometimes also giving some other subjects to talk about like the foxes in Cloudbreather's Crag that will double-cross the invaders but also complain to no end. Characters develop a LOT from Glumshanks,uh... Spoilers, to Cali being more supportive of Hugo instead of just berating him, etc etc. There's something both parents and kids can get behind because it shows effort.

Oh Lordt, a dissertation on why SF is "immature". Listen bud, I read through your post up until SC (no spoilers plz) and I'm still not convinced. When you talk about "care" that's your own personal investment. Honestly, I couldn't care less about the NPC characters in Giants or Trap Team. I don't know where you got the idea that Kaos was a hardcore villain pre-SF considering he's always been a bratty, immature minute punk whose been using minions. I mean "Sky-losers"? His evil mimics of Skylanders? The hydra thing? Hektor from the 3DS version of SA was a much better villain. He was never a threat to me as the player and even in Giants he became more of a bother than a full fledged villain.
And how are you forgiving TT for being a "Saturday Morning cartoon-y" when that's exactly what SF is as well? From the silly humor to doing a damn good job at selling the toys. At least SF actually emphasized their gimmick characters to justify paying more for them, you could literally have the same story without the "Trap Masters" at all (Giants were just bigger Skylanders and we all knew this). Not even gonna bother with your sentence making it seem like Giants was some grand journey when it was really nothing but a bunch of fluff. The Skylanders series is no Final Fantasy so this "discussion" on the story is the equivalent of saying which dust bunny is the best. I also find it funny how you're running your mouth on how bad SF is while I'm still enjoying it more than the "Bitfrost acclaimed" Giants and Trap Team...and it's not just the story I enjoyed that made me consider it "amazing" (and, FYI, there's never been any dialogue from the NPCs of the first four games that I have not deemed "immature" so that "point" is pointless) . Oh and, get off my pole. |
Bifrost Prismatic Sparx Gems: 10370 |
#40 Posted: 15:35:36 16/02/2016
Didn't put any spoilers in the SC section, which is why I said I wouldn't go into one of them because spoilers.
Kaos is a miniature brat that killed someone with a magic nuke after several attempts at killing thousands in the books and his first course of action when meeting you in Secret Vault of Secrets is to bury the skylander alive. That's not very scary at first but the csual disdain makes him pretty threatening once you stop to think. He has childish manners for unchildlike actions; while in SF he has childlike behavior for childlike actions, is what I mean. By the saturday morning cartoon-y thing I also meant formulaic and with things to do over any deeper meanings. There's still character development but it's simple, same for Giants but the formula is more adventure and weird stuff rather than villains act heroes react. SF has no development, no reasons given for attachment other than 'save the guy/beat the villain' because one isn't trying to kill your character. Things happen because they're funny or cool, and it ends there, could've replaced all the NPCs with stick figures with no difference. You can't replace of characters easily on the other games because they actually have a set of characteristics and personalities. If you have a very high line for what's between immature and mature it's none of my business, but mine is more between 'walking joke' and 'more than cardboard'. If you don't care about the lore or the characters why would you even want to even think about it,of course, but I do, and I like when it shows any effort. If you don't want to discuss because this is too below your standards, that's what a tl;dr is for.

I'm killing time sweetie, plus I'm interested in seeing how far you are willing to go to drag SF. Plus I always like a good head to head...
And you most certainly can replace anyone who isn't Flynn (debatable) and Eon in any game. The Other NPC don't have functions, characteristics and personalities that make them that special enough that their loss would be missed IMHO. I mean, Cali was replaced in TT and I liked Tessa a lot better. I also didn't notice Hugo was gone until the 3DS version. I do have higher standards and if I thought about the lore I would have quit the Skylanders franchise after the second one for having such a weak lore and not providing enough content for my investment. However, it's nice to have a game you can just play without a care in the world. You know the story with every Skylanders game before you even sit down, it's not complicated and it's not convoluted (looking at your Kingdom Hearts) and that's ok since it's a kid's game anyways. It's still a fun experience... except Giants. Giants was too kindergarten of a game for me. |

So, the Crash rumor from before yesterday was shot down(though in a VERY fake manner, the guy said the person in the interview was talking about Crash figures when he never mentioned that), but with all of Sony's teasing seems like they won't open with a Guest Star announcement even if it's real. A leak, some hints here and there, some teasing images or videos. This kind of stuff. The reason why I want it soooo bad is that last year has been a disappointment under the news point of view as well. I mean... With only 10 new characters, the hunt for news didn't last long for me. Yeah, it was cute looking for revamps and vehicles, even variants (AT FIRST) but it certainly wasn't the same as, say, SWAP Force or Trap Team. I really missed it since it is an important aspect of the whole Skylanders experience, to me, and that's why I want something about the sixth game so bad.

Confirmed. But do I want it?
If they do something cool Ill get it, if it doesn't appeal to me, I might not. But after 5 (5?) years of collecting the figures and hundreds of dollars spent on it, I don't see a reason to stop, my 200+ figures will sit there, untouched, as replaying the games feel boring, Do I stop with this franchise or keep going, If I stop then I will get hassled for wasting money on toys, but I don't see them as just toys. My feelings have changed about this franchise as I've grown older, gotten a larger ps3 and have started playing tons of new games, and well... Skylanders is sitting at the bottom of the case pile, the storylines tend to be short and I expected more from a game which its characters cost more then the game itself. TL DR I'm a sad person who gets emotional about video games

I mean... Have you Platinum'd them yet? That's really it before I'm gonna put them into a display case as a memory of what once brought me amusement.

I try to keep calm, but man, I really want to see how this game goes. Hope it doesn't disappoint anyone. It will, for sure, but yeah... Hope they fix the problems with SuperChargers. Also waiting to see the TV series.

Maybe Lorne Balfe needs a assist composer? A new one in the fray could give a breath of fresh air to the soundtrack. I don't think that deleting Lorne could help, he's still a good composer, as you can see in many songs on SuperChargers. Also, about that thing of soundtrack not having many songs, this is common in video game soundtracks, like Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U: A Smashing Soundtrack, Super Mario 64: Greatest Hits and so on. I know, the majority of then are Club Nintendo rewards, but still. Quote: AdamGregory03
Now I can see a key ring as a Skylander.
