I live in upstate NY and I can tell you that NYC is grossly unprepared to deal with snow considering that they're a major Metropolitan area. We like to make jokes about them up here.
With that said, they did get at least a foot and a half of snow, which is more than they would get from even a nasty snowstorm. <.<

Wait, a foot and a half? Are you kidding? We deal with 5 or so months of snow up here, and it's more than a foot a lot of the time. Huh. I guess it's just the climate difference.

Yes, well, not everyone lives in an area where, once snow starts falling, it's stuck on the ground until the seasons change. >_________>

Cities like NYC are not prepared at all for this kind of snow. Over here in Montreal things get cleaned in under 2 days.

NYC resident here. This will be a bit of rambling.
Basically HIR is right. We very rarely get snow this heavy. It's rare to see snow totaling a foot let alone what we ended up getting (in some areas over two feet; .1 of an inch off the all time record for us). While upstate New York, Long Island, and New Jersey get loads of snow around us and so have experience with this, we tend to get an easier time and so are inexperienced with such large amounts. Additionally the pipes and subway systems under Manhattan mean the ground is warmer than it actually would be, so snow often times doesn't stick on the roads and sidewalk there. Totals of like 1-2 inches in on itself can be uncommon some winters, only happening a few times per season. Usually just throwing some salt on the ground is enough to keep things relatively clean. Everything can continue as normal. So when there's a chance of an actual big storm coming in people aren't very used to it or necessarily prepared, especially when the storm ended up being heavier than we actually expected. Also remember that we're a huge metropolitan city that also includes a rather extensive transit system of buses and trains (many of those trains going on elevated tracks), and millions of people daily rely on these things. When the blizzard is really bad and/or snow (or black ice) is piling up driving conditions are rough and you don't want a big ass bus carrying people losing control or vision. And that goes double for a train on elevated tracks. So the MTA in conditions like this will often shut down service in many areas or entirely (only a few trains were operating during the blizzard and they all only operated underground). That can mess with people getting from place to place and disrupt things, though seeing how it was a weekend and only lasted a day that wasn't as bad as a problem. But then there's cleaning. Some of those elevated stations and rails have snow/ice on them making it a bit more unsuitable for trains to be operating like normal, or for passengers to safely get onto the platforms and not slip and get injured (or worse). And snow that piles onto the sidewalks and roads get pushed around as people try to shovel the snow away from their cars and sidewalk to make walking space, and street cleaners (and equipped garbage trucks) respectively try to clear the roads to ensure a more smooth drive for everyone. This snow then piles on corners or the edge of the sidewalk/road, sometimes piling over 6 feet tall and creating problems for people who may need to park or, more notable, people trying to climb over and get to the bus. And naturally as it's sunny some of the snow begins to melt, but as it's cold it freezes and you have a mixture of ice and in some cases slush. This ice problem is a thing with regular snowfall and will probably be worse now that we've had such a blizzard*. *As mentioned earlier this may not be as big of a problem for Manhattan. However for other boroughs this can be an issue, especially for businesses and residents who don't shovel. New York City usually gets to avoid a lot of these heavier storms and natural disasters. We don't usually get blizzards (though they're probably most common), hurricanes and tropical storms are usually too weak to do anything by the time they get here, and we pretty much never get tornadoes and earthquakes. It also shows in just how badly Sandy ****ed us up. |
