To what extent does the use of language, both contemporary and academic, reflect society's ignorance on changes in philosophy regarding gender and personal identity? Should there be a conscious, deliberate effort made to change this? If so, why?

While I think there should be an effort to change this in order to make people feel more comfortable, some people take it way too far, like those people on Tumblr who want to be called "bun/bunself". While it's certainly good to make people feel more welcome by referring to them as what they'd like to be referred to as, people like the aforementioned Tumblr users kind of make a mockery of the whole situation.

I do think we are becoming more accepting as a society, and I've seen the "other" option in things such as surveys added much more than before, but some people really make the whole thing seem stupid, and their actions really make others seem invalid.

On one hand, it's great that we're becoming a bit more forward thinking and accepting, but on the other hand there are those that abuse the system and make the whole situation seem idiotic. It's really a double edged sword.
