The Revenant leads with 12 nominations.

Just some bullet points in case people don't want to go through the whole list:

  • There's just 8 films nominated for Best Picture compared to the usual 10. Doesn't sound too big of an issue now but there's been some snubs.

  • DiCaprio is nominated for Best Actor and at this point I'd say he's odds on favorite to finally win.

  • Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg aren't nominated for Best Director, but The Martian and Bridge of Spies (respectively) are nominated for Best Picture. Also respectively Matt Damon is nominated for Best Actor, but Tom Hanks is not.

  • Star Wars didn't get a Best Picture nomination but has 5 total nominations, mostly in technical categories.

  • Inside Out is nominated for Best Animated Picture. The Peanuts Movie is not.

  • Mad Max: Fury Road has several nominations including Best Picture.

  • Sam Smith gets a Best Original Song nomination for Spectre despite supposedly being one of the worst Bond themes in recent years, but See You Again by Wiz Khalifa for Furious 7 (being a tribute to Paul Walker) is snubbed.

  • 50 Shades of Grey also got a Best Original Song nomination.

  • Nominees are predominantly white so people are taking issue with it. This makes some sense though since Straight Outta Compton which was praised only got a single nomination (not for Best Picture), and despite supposedly wonderful performances across the board in Creed (haven't seen it yet myself) the only acting nomination coming from it was given to Stallone.

Replace that boy and world movie with The peanuts movie. It was the only big animated movie that wasn't super corny this year

    Well damn.

This Oscars nomination list was so good. It was actually good this year.

-I could handle Ex Machina and Creed not getting best picture nominations
-I could handle Creed not getting that many nominations in general
-I could handle Jurassic World, Mission Impossible, Kingsman, and the Peanuts Movie not getting any nominations
-I could handle "See You Again" not getting an Ocsar nomination for Best Original Song

I could've just thought "It's not a perfect list, there are some movies that I feel deserve it better than others, but hey, there's a lot of good competition and I'm glad the stuff that got nomainated did get nominated in the first place!"

AND THEN THEY WENT AND NOMINATED FIFTY SHADES OF GREY.

Seriously, this ruined the entire nom list for me. Can you HONESTLY say to me that fifty shades of garbage is deserving of any, ANY nomination? I know that it's in best original song but nothing else, but by doing this the academy is basically saying that what is arguably the worst thing to ever happen to entertainment is more deserving of an oscar nomination than most of the other films that clearly deserved at least an honorable mention too but didn't get it.

I mean really, can people honestly, SEROUSLY tell me that their garbage song to a garbage film is more deserving than, as I mentioned before, a song like "See You Again"? and calling fifty shades garbage is putting it as lightly as possible. I don't think any word really exists to describe how hellishly awful fifty shades is. This is without a doubt the worst choice the Academy has ever done.

Also, do you realize how much the studio behind that horrible film is going to overplay this? "fifty shades of grey; nominated for an academy award." We live in a world now where that actually exists and it makes me feel awful as a moviegoer and as someone who loves good entertainment that soemthing this insanely stupid can be a true statement.

Keep in mind that the lone single nomination 50 Shades of Grey has is for Best Original Song which has nothing to do with the film's quality whatsoever, and only involves the song in question.
In other words if the movie didn't have that song it would've never gotten even near the Oscars.

And frankly Best Original Song isn't really a thing that people put on their DVD unless it was written by the same person who made the score (which I'm fairly sure it wasn't done by the same people) and even then only usually when there's other awards for it to put alongside it because, again, Best Original Song says nothing of the film's quality and only that there's a decent song related to it.

And if it helps you sleep at night the film got quite a few Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture.
