don't expect to understand any character motivation whatsoever. it's almost funny to see how the biggest problems in the movies could be solved by literally any character just not being a complete idiot for a fleeting moment.

just saw the film. let me say I was pleasantly surprised by how good the film was, especially since i'm not huge on star wars. Definitely my 2nd favorite after The Empire Strikes Back(which basically means I only actually enjoyed two star wars films since i'm iffy on the rest and hate episode 1 and 2)
(following contains spoilers for TFA) so some stuff I disliked about it first: -I feel like Poe Dameron was kind of underutilized in this movie. Everyone loves this character, but i didn't really feel anything for him, i kind of thought he was just there to have a character in the fight on Starkiller Base. -The First Order is kind of underwhelming. I thought Kylo Ren was a pretty cool villain(and I actually found the tantrums he threw kind of funny), but that's about it. I didn't really care for Snoke at all(though i think that was kind of the point since he's not supposed to be in that much anyways), and save for that lightsaber battle against the stormtrooper, i didn't really care for anything else regarding The First Order. -Captain Phasma is probably one of the worst characters I've seen in the Star Wars movies. She doesn't really do anything, she serves little purpose on the story, and it's just wasted potential on what could've been a really cool villain beside Kylo Ren. -This is more of a nitpick, but I really wanted to see more of R2-D2. He's one of my favorite Star Wars characters, and I kind of wish they gave a better reason for him being deactivated. So going into stuff I liked/loved: - the action was really improved from the last films. the effects look a lot more natural thanks to the actual props and whatnot, and the effects overall look really great. -seeing Han Solo and Chewbacca again was great. I loved the chemistry between the two, and Harrison Ford gives a really nice performance. -Seeing all the original cast is refreshing, and I'm glad they gave it their all in the few scenes that they were in. the lightsaber battles are my favorite of the series by far. they aren't as stiff ads the original trilogy, but they also aren't as clean and choreographed as the prequels. -the dialogue and writing is excellent. I was laughing a surprising bit during the movie, and I loved the chemistry all the characters shared. -John Boyega gives an excellent performance as Finn. I love his character and concept, and I enjoyed every minute he was on the screen. -Daisy Ridley, in my opinion, is the best thing that happened to this movie. I absolutely adored her performance of Rey, her dialogue, her acting, her everything. She is the heart and soul of this whole movie, and, in my opinion, is so far the best Star Wars character, not counting expanded universe characters. I can't wait to see what Daisy Ridley does next withe her career, because she's now one of my favorite actresses after seeing this movie. other than that, i'm really mixed on Kylo Ren killing Han Solo. I'm not really sure what to think of it. I'm also mixed on how Luke was utilized. I know they're saving that for the next film, but I REALLY wish they gave him a little more time in the film, even just one line of dialogue.

Finally saw it after mostly rewatching the saga (didn't get to finish Return of the Jedi). Excellent movie and possibly the best in the series honestly. A lot of thinks work and the charm of the originals is there along with more updated visuals and modern identity. Also the actors were better in this film honestly (people love to trash the acting of the prequels but even in the original films the acting wasn't the greatest in the world).
VII > V = III > IV > VI > II > I Kylo Ren is a fairly good villain and I look forward to what they do from here with him, but he became infinitely less threatening when he took off the helmet and he turned out to be a prettyboy with long locks of hair. It also made his outbursts less like signs of instability and danger and more like simple temper tantrums because he didn't get what he wanted how he wanted. I don't need them to go the Vader route and burn his face off but they should do more to make him a more threatening presence going forward. Killing Han felt like an inevitability especially once they establish Ren is his son. I kinda figured long ago that they would probably kill off one of the older characters to establish the new villains as a real threat. Quote: valskeletor
I don't know why people expected different anyway. The film was bound to hark back to the originals to act as an apology for the prequels and to show fans that Abrams and whoever else Disney gets to work on new films have a love for the series and that it's in good hands (even if just showing a bunch of nostalgic stuff doesn't actually mean too much in that sense). Nostalgia is in right now. The Peanuts Movie was one big nostalgia trip running through a checklist of famous Peanuts tropes and it did wonderfully. Star Wars is an even bigger source of nostalgia and childhood memories for several generations now so you bet your ass they'll exploit that to hook you in for whatever they do from here. Also take notes during the romance scenes on how not to flirt or interact with a girl you like. I'm not sure if it was Lucas' intention to make Anakin socially inept and uncomfortable but his attempts at trying to woo Padme by going too far into detail about his dreams was hard to watch now that I actually paid attention to it. Why did you expect Boba? ---------------------------- EDIT: There's a bit of a problem though. I kinda hoped the big Starkiller (good thing they made Force Unleashed noncanon to get away with that name) planet would stick around for at least another film. Thing is there's a scale problem. The Death Star was a huge thing and it was stopped in the first film and if it all ended there you could get away with it. The second Death Star was able to get by because it was intended to be even larger and more powerful, and also still under construction so blow it up now before it's too late. Now you had a planet sized weapon that was capable of destroying entire star systems and multiple planets, destroying the Senate that had survived in some form for thousands of years (it feels like the film glossed over that and didn't put enough weight on that). How do you make a bigger threat than that for films going forward? You can't really go making a galaxy destroyer unless you want the First Order pulling the self destruct "if I can't have it nobody can" attitude. Building it again would seem a little redundant or odd. Also does this mean Coruscant is destroyed? Damn I liked that planet. |

On the villain, I agree so much,it's almost meta in hindsight.
A pretty boy that's totally cool like Vader, but in retrospect didn't really put any effort in training/backbone like he did and is mostly a manchild with power which might or might not be ignoring his own idol's spirit. Sounds like the logical conclusion of a bad OC applied to reality, actually, and it's awesome that it works. On Starkiller Base, yeah now they'll have to top it, but it had the issue of being too powerful. You HAVE the great eternal threat of something that can destroy your system from anywhere in the galaxy... And it's the problem in itself because the odds are too much in the side of the First Order for their defeat not sound a bit ridiculous later on. It'd be better if they had some crazy starship fleet or something in its place.

It can also kinda work as a slight criticism/nudge towards whiny fanboys who throw temper tantrums when things don't go exactly their way. Though that's kinda stretching it. -------- |

The best part about that I also heard from the Super Best Friends the other day.
Had they introduced him as this loser Vader wannabe after all the awesome stuff he did in the LAST movie, this would be the worst ever. But because he's being a loser now,it'll be even more awesome if he grows out of it to be a true threat, or at least we'll be expecting the failure if Hux just steamrolls over because of his lack of backbone or worse.
