Nuclear weapons, genocide, preaches of doomsday, blackholes, letting robots do all the work and takeover and of course tabloid headlines of the end of the world through a World War III, meteorites, etc. Not to mention all the videos about how all these horrible futures in movies will become real in a few decades.
Why are these people so obsessed for the world to end now when it's been fine since it's creation? Sure, we had horrible wars and whatnot but not enough to wipe out humanity altogether or destroy the planet itself. It's like these people want all this to happen.

It's not so much excited about the world ending more than it is imagining different scenarios of what can happen and creating interesting stories or forms of media about that post apocalyptic or dystopian future and what will happen or how the human race will continue to endure even in the darkest of hours.
People don't think they can survive a zombie apocalypse, but they like to write and think about it and the many stories it can create, some of which have been very powerful (Telltale's The Walking Dead). Nuclear weapons were made as a somewhat natural advancement of weapon technology and if you recall your basic world history nuclear weapons have been used in actual combat exactly once and never again. While nuclear weapons have advanced and become both more destructive and more portable they're considered more of a deterrent and a threat than an actual weapon in the arsenal to use on any given day, since the vast majority of people are aware of the destruction and consequences dropping a nuke can bring. I mean the US and USSR went 50 years with fingers on the buttons without ever actually pressing them because they knew that it could bring about the end of the world and wasn't about to strike unless the other did so first. Tabloid headlines and wackos preaching doomsday bring panic and attention and with that attention brings fame (or infamy) and wealth. If your newspaper or website talks about calm peaceful mundane news some people will watch. But if you report about something dangerous or something relatively threatening but explode it into something resembling the end times and give it a catchy "THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY CAN BRING ABOUT THE END OF HUMANITY" headline people are going to pick up the paper, tune in, click the link, and bring in traffic and money based on fear. Robotics and the singularity are a little concerning since there is a realistic chance that in the future mankind won't pay much attention and just make that big AI capable of learning and adapting on its own (hell that's what the singularity is), but I also want to think that they all saw things like Terminator and will know better than to allow it to find humanity as a flaw that must be eradicated. Or that there can be some workaround with it. If anything be more afraid of the prospect of robots taking all the jobs leaving most people without work and a reliable source of income as explained here. That one doesn't seem to have a solution at the moment and we need to rapidly come up with one before it's too late. And lastly.... Quote: StevemacQ
These are not manmade creations so that wouldn't be us wiping ourselves out. And the nearest black hole is way too far out for us to ever get sucked into it, nor are there any nearby candidates of stars that could become black holes (no, the Sun will not become one at the end of its life billions of years from now). |

I kinda made an error there but they are something these cynical articles throw in as another possibility for we can all die.
Sorry for writing but... I thought this would at least be appropriate as stuff and nonsense. One more food for thought. If someone was willing to create weapons that can't wipe out humanity (or make to commit that purpose) for money, then what is the point of having all that money said misanthropist can't even use it.

They don't know better. Most of this kinda doomsday-talk comes from young people who don't really even know what's going on in the world currently. They just read the bad news online and think it's all going to ****.
If humans really were so violent and bent on destruction we would've never gotten this far to begin with. I'd say that we are instead masters of adaptation and survival. Compared to the last century we're already doing good, and compared to the last millennium we're doing great! I'd also like to take this opportunity to mention that by nature human beings, when compared to other animals, are actually incredibly non-violent creatures (violence =/= aggression btw). And the reason for that is really just plain logic. We may be aggressive at times, but that is simply a form of defense as opposed to offense. An emotionally healthy human being doesn't want destruction, pain, fighting, war, or to get hurt, and usually everything we do is done to keep that from happening. What humankind needs right now is education, and the worldwide spread of scientific information. All problems, were they medical, political, religious, etc. could be helped if people simply knew better. |

Well, Earth's almost unsustainable anyway. We might as well die and hope the earth changes for the better.

It would if it was like 'make humanity have never existed' kind of thing, but with all the dangerous crap we left around, it'd be a bigger issue now. Heck, first things first if we just disappeared from Earth, nuclear power plants having *no one* handling them. Then oil rigs exploding everywhere because they'll probably be on no matter what time of the day you'd do that. That's already a ton of GREATER damage than if we were still around.

What is it about Earth that people are so worried about? The planet is doing fine, and it will be for about 5 billion years still, until the Sun expands into a red giant and completely destroys the Inner Solar System in the process. Is it nature that they worry for? Well first of all, isn't humankind a part of nature? And if not for us, what would make nature so special and precious? We're the ones that assign it the value that we see in it, as we're the ones that need it to survive. It doesn't have any intrinsic worth of it's own. A bunny or a wolf isn't any more "innocent" or "precious" or "pure" than we are. A bunny will eat all the plants it needs to survive without a second thought, just as a wolf will eat all the bunnies it needs to survive, even if they were the last bunnies on Earth. How is that objectively better than building buildings, making machines and harnessing nature in order to survive and evolve? |

![]() Black holes don't suck. When an object enters the event horizon, tidal forces rip it apart. For supermassive black holes (around 1 billion solar masses or more), even this doesn't happen, the object just passes right on through. It can never come back, though. Also, most meteorites are far too small to do any serious damage when they collide. In fact, we're probably more likely to be hit by some of our own space junk (i.e. old satellites and whatnot) than meteorites. |

Figurative suck. Isn't the gravitational force around a black hole ridiculously strong to where it's very hard to escape even before passing the event horizon? |

First when you were alive in northern Africa back in like, 2000 B.C. Somewhere at that time. You hypnotised the Libyans to try to destroy the Egyptians. That started a war. You later hypnotised the leader of the Roman republic to start an empire back in 500 B.C. In the next 500 years, they build an empire, killing people. Then, in 476 you hired a hun to kill the empirer of western Rome. Then, in 1453 you made the leader of the Ottoman Turks to take out eastern Rome. You later hypnotise the newly empirer of the Ottoman empire to take over eastern Europe. Then, in 1789 you told Napoléon Bonaparte to take over France during their financial crisis. Later, in 1800 you would tell him to take out Europe. That starts the Napoleonic wars. After that, in 1914 you hire an assassin to kill Franz Ferdinand. That later starts world war I. Then, start a communist revolution in Russia. You help Vladimir Lenin to take what's left of the Russian empire. You would them help Hitler rise to power in the 1920's to 1930's. He starts world war II. You then betray Hitler and kill him because he owed you money. After world war II you tell Stalin that the United States hates communism and they got nukes. Stalin starts making nukes. You are later planning to destroy the world. You did not do 9/11. |
