On a very liberal site like this, we focus on denying generalizations and reinforcing the assertion that individuals retain unique qualities regardless of their background. However, sometimes we simply find it hard to believe this, not because we're assholes, but more often than not because we simply haven't encountered an exception to the rule our personal lives. Of course, it's not okay to stereotype individuals, but the first step to recovery is admitting we have a problem. So, instead of bragging about our angelic qualities, let's accept what terrible people we are for a change.
Anyway, I'll go first:
-"Popular kids are always conceited, malicious, or both" - In nearly two decades of life, I have YET to meet one who isn't.
-"School dropouts are bums" - Bums might be a strong word, but they definitely seem to have less drive and determination than the average Joe, which is far worse than being unintelligent IMO.
As I reflected in the title, please don't be a dick; if someone posts a stereotype that you just HAVE to contradict, then simply share your story. Do not jump down anyone's throat, because chances are, you're no better of a person and your closet isn't so skeleton-free, either.

I knew a feeew popular kids that were decent people, but it usually were those easily swayed kids who'd do anything to follow the rest on being jerks. You'd only really see they could be much better when they were alone or with more mature groups.
I've yet to meet an abstract-focused artist in my course that doesn't drink or smoke a ton. And that's because I don't go to parties, you just always hear every week about that time several of them passed out or got sick in them.

I can see that. And in this case, I believe abstract artist can also refer to those out-of-the-box writers and musicians, too. But sometimes, I think it's part of the job, if you know what I mean. |

In my class,it's those guys who just avoid whatever paintings/drawings that look remotely figurative and will go on and on about how can pictures be real if reality isn't real or something along those lines - and the first method of trying to avoid reality is to always drink until you have hellish hangovers apparently. As it's obvious from my wording, not too into that; but if there are some artists that can keep a healthy life even if their creativeness goes crazy like RaymanTwilight's friend, that's awesome.

As someone who goes to art school, yeah there are a lot of stoner abstract art students. I ended up accidentally taking a few abstract classes (the class descriptions are terrible it's not my fault) and so many of the other kids smoke.
There are a tonne of drinkers too, but that's true of literally any University, thanks to New Zealand's significant binge drinking culture. Heck even at high school everyone was already having massive alcohol parties.

^That's a common one around here. Like if you're black people automatically think you're problematic, I remember multiple instances of that from high schools with a particularly racist teacher who seemed to make fun of the black people in the class about going to college and drugs and dropping out although sometimes he was joking with them. He had beef with everyone.

Just a reminder to people to remain civil and please not go to an overly racist/sexist/homophobic degree. Outright hate speech will not be tolerated.

Those two are what I thought off as well. I'm sorry, but I'm not that fond of popular people at all, and that's mainly because it was the popular kids who always gave me a really hard time throughout Primary School, and they were really annoying in High School and were terrible people in general. I can only think of three popular people who were decent people and were actually nice to me, and the rest were all jerks.

A stereotype that I just can't help but believe is true... is "Gamergate is a bunch of immature, woman hating, racist, bigoted trolls." I've met plenty of people who are huge into Gamergate, and I've made friends with a handful of them. Not *one* I've met, was not like this stereotype. Each and every one I've met has a victim personality, where they think literally everyone is out to get them and their videogames. They lose it when I, a woman, say something with an opinion, they're extremely anti-liberal (yet they claim to be anti-conservative as well), and all of the ones I've met have made comparisons to politically correctness, being stuff like fascism, cruelty, or other.
I can get along with any type of person, as I think everyone should, and as I said, I've made friends with a handful of them... but they really are just ridiculous people, who I try my best to avoid talking to on any bad day, just because I know they're going to piss me off. I'm sure there's a small few who don't fall into this stereotype, but the majority do. |

I want to say something against this because I know SO MANY devs who are GG supporters and are amazing people, and people in general that are around just to laugh at the flame baiters on Twitter or do research/article archiving for the compilations, but on the other hand, DarkSpyro does NOT need a Gamergate discussion.
So I'll just stick to 'I know people who are ANYTHING but bigoted in that side'. People who smoke litter. It's almost like a requirement, jesus, there's a trash can next to you gosh darn it.

Okay.......I went to an 83% black school. I've seen so many sides of the "black community" that it's honestly hard to think of them as a separate community. I take it that you guys probably haven't, and that's okay. I think it's just a matter of growing up in a certain environment, like CAV said, and sometimes you just have to put yourself in the shoes of another culture. It's pretty easy to say "Racism doesn't exist" or "Racism doesn't mean anything" when you're white, and that's just the truth. Oh, and Mesuxelf, that sounds more like something a white girl would do in my experience. Black girls don't **** around; where I'm from, they will square up with anyone, even a guy, without hesitation. |

When I say environment I mostly mean environments/families of low income or who live in low income housing or "ghettos". I've noticed that these attitudes and stuff are more common there, such as in my third high school which was planted right by the projects. I've met and seen many black women do what Mesu describes, or at least to a more aggressive degree.
And it works the other way around too. A lot of southern hick hillbilly "white trash" stereotypes are also going to be found more often in places of low income housing (trailer parks?). Quote: Bifrost

Call of Duty-players consist of dudebro douchebags, screaming children, racists and other ****heads. Even with League of Legends fans, multiplayer CoD-players are still the worst and they still definitely exist to this day. It's not an unfair stereotype.
Also Millenials with their "hashtag-OMGlulrandom, hashtagkimkardashian, hashtagiphone" and how people don't notice that millenials are defined by very specifics personalities and trends, not what era they were born in. **** them all too.

@Metallo The middle school I went to had a percentage quite similar to that. Seemed like there were sassy black women out the wazoo, but only because they're the easiest to offend and the most memorable of the crowd. Also, being a multiracial guy I had marginally lighter skin than most everyone else (I'm really not super light, maybe medium tone but whatever). I got mixed reactions but that was always the deal with most schools, the "what are you" question was common, and then I got the "white trash" comment a few occasions, clearly oppressive measures inherited from equally hateful parents. You have a bad bunch in every race, just because this bunch were raised in poor conditions doesn't mean they represent everyone. However, that school really had a poor bunch so my friends of all creeds were eternally grateful whenever I brought them to my house (most of them lived in run down apartments and never often said a word to their parents upon walking in so you know at that point it really isn't their fault) with loving, welcoming family and plenty of food to stuff your gob with. That being said, doing good for others is nice. : )

People don't know their native languages. By this I mean that almost all people who I've met and are more than 50% Chinese/Japanese/Russian/From a country where the official language isn't English CANNOT speak their native language. I just find it annoying, because it's basically throwing away a huge part of your heritage. Yeah.

My mom is full-blooded Italian and probably knows about 2-3 sentences worth of Italian. It's because she's a Third Generation American; her grandparents, my great-grandparents, came over from Italy sometime in the 1910s, and from then until about the 1960s, immigrant families stayed very close to each other, and would normally only marry with other immigrants. So while the blood was kept intact, no one is immune to Americanization. While I can see where you're coming from, I think your viewpoint might be on the borderline of cultural appropriation; I can't tell you how many idiots have responded with "Why don't you know any Italian?" or "But why aren't you tan and oily?" when I've told them I'm half-Italian. I just don't think cultural norms should ever define who you are as an individual. But that's just me. |
