Funny, since it's full of hot, red-blooded Americans, but Texas bills itself as 'a whole 'nother country.' If you like big, friendly, and relaxed, it's likely that this big-hearted state is just the right 'noter country for you.

Vermont.

Quiet, rural, and picturesque, Vermont is a wonderful place to live if you want to get far away from it all, but not TOO far away from it all. You may not be much of a people person but, in Vermont, you're sure to have neighbors you'll love.

Also, this question: Your friend is visiting you, what kind of touristy things would you take them to do?

Depends where you are. Some parts of Manhattan are still active at that late of an hour and maybe downtown areas of other boroughs but otherwise it's quiet (to me; others might not think so to be hearing a truck or car passing by every now and then).
