Is it legal for multiple school officials to go through students social media, knowing their accounts, request them to be added such as Facebook & Snapchat, then try to use that to get them in trouble when stuff isn't school related? Just found out multiple school officials watch my Twitter for no exact reason...

I've seen it happen, but if it's legal, no idea. In Brazil I only remember a few parents suing schools that were grasping at straws to find reasoning to ban/shame a student(like ideologies and stuff),but never legit issues based on what they said in social media.

It's not illegal for them to go through something if it's public. Anyone on here could do it. Now, if they go through something like your locker without permission or reason, then that's not legal.

I don't think there's any law about that but it's certainly messed up. What happens on social media counts as being off school grounds, in which school officials usual don't have any power in what you do.

Why the hell would any teacher be interested in ruining any of his student's lives? Don't they have better things to do?

Anyway, you could just report them. If they're using this to turn against you, guess this would count as abuse or something like that.

I've never heard of any laws but it sounds morally wrong. I guess it depends on the school and the reason why the student would get in trouble though. Like at my high school teachers weren't allowed to add students on facebook, twitter, etc. until they turned eighteen but if a student reported another student for doing something bad online (like once a kid threatened over facebook to bomb the school) then teachers were able to do something about it.

There have been occasions where the school has punished students for actions that take place off school grounds, simply because of talk on social media, or because talk gets back to the school grounds..

One of my friends once got in trouble for making fun of me on FB, but he was just joking around and the school board got involved. Luckily I was able to bail him out of getting into any trouble.

Pretty sure schools don't have authority over something that happens off their grounds, at least if it's not illegal...

It's happened before at my school, but then again, the perpetrator was using his phone on school grounds to say something mean about another student. Then, I think it's okay. But desperately trying to look for a reason to get someone in trouble for something that isn't school-related is not okay.

It's not illegal to go through your info online. It IS, however, illegal for them to get you in trouble for it if it is not something illegal that you commented about. ie: you said you bought illegal drugs on someone's page. Even if joking, that they can get you in trouble for.

The law hasn't caught up with current technology and software, at least in the United States. There's nothing in FERPA about educators being prevented from accessing public information about the students they have. Although FERPA is really about keeping people from accessing student records as opposed to the other way around (but it's the only major education-related privacy law in the US). <.<

Pretty much what everyone has said above. I don't believe that it's illegal but not only is it morally wrong, it's just plain creepy.

Not sure if it's a law in the US, but it should considered unconstitutional.

We get it, you hate everything about America. You don't have to act like a Australian nationalist about it.

For a regular student, no.

But for a student in certain extracurricular activities (e.g. student government, JROTC, Beta club, et cetera), I think it's very unbecoming to make crude, lewd, or otherwise inappropriate posts or comments on social media because it reflects poorly on the organization as well as you, and therefore, I believe it's okay for the proper authorities to keep an eye on things.
