Why are they so old? I watched a documentary of the selection and the youngest applicant was still 22.....There was a Major in the training cadre who had served in Vietnam and was still active duty....

it doesn't require much finesse to take potshots at refugees and immigrants

Because Australia's Defense-Force favors experience and maturity over America's moronic high-school drop-outs who are dumb enough to follow orders that will get them killed?

I think experienced, calmer, older men tend to make much better soldiers than old teenagers and young adults. Provided that they're still young enough to be in good physical condition, that is.

It's just that those men are often settled down and doing good, while there's an abundance of young people who are willing to enlist to get some action.

There's also the fact that the SASR are an elite special forces unit. Australia already has some pretty significant standards at the lowest level (My dad could shoot you in the head with a standard rifle at 100m. He's the grease monkey), so I imagine the training and standards required to get into SASR wouldn't be for the faint of heart (Which basically describes Australia's youth to a T).

I was only joking before, btw. I respect all military men and women irregardless of what country they fight for.

No offense to your dad, but that isn't exactly hard.

I don't mean to say that I'm some cold-blooded super killer, I mean that 100m is a short range for a rifle.

True but, like I said, he's a none combatant. I'm not sure what distance modern warfare takes place, though. Must be pretty bloody far given that everybody is armed with a sniper-rifle, these days. Also I may be remembering wrong. The 100m could have been with the pistol. I'll have to ask.

Snipers are highly trained and highly qualified - sniper rifles are never standard issue.

Modern warfare is making greater and greater strides towards the unconventional side of the spectrum. Special forces (and their noncombatant support personnel) are in increasingly higher demand.

Also, Samius is right: 100m is pretty short for a standard rifle. Most regular military personnel qualify with rifles somewhere in the ballpark of 250-400m. And I imagine most special forces would have to qualify at even longer ranges.

I suppose it's also entirely possible that the men really are relatively young, they just look older because of the stress of the job.

By Sniper Rifle, I mean the WWII era definition of the term of a rifle with a telescopic sight. Which even my mum has! Sorry for that confusion, but that's what I think of when I think of a sniper-rifle smilie;

Ah okay. Do they even use iron sights on rifles in combat anymore? Let's ask Google...

dismount that high horse, i'm sure there's some child soldiers out there who would be happy to have decently calibrated iron sights

In training we primarily used iron sights, but if there were actual firefights to be had a lot more money would flow into new equipment.

...Which is the kinda situation you Americans deliberately keep going all the time.

Not saying that to judge, conflict forces growth.
