Somewhat serious topic.

I don't like anime. I dislike anime. It doesn't interest me.

Explain to me why it's equal to, or better than Western animation, which I actually don't watch a lot of either. Why do you like it? Why do others like it? Why should I spend my time into it? Why have I never gave in in attempts to turn me into an anime fan, why do my friends like it but I don't.
Explain to me the appeal. Persuade me.

There's really no difference between anime and a cartoon.

The true difference is that culture barrier, and if you tolerate Japan's way of telling a story then thats p cool.

If you think Japan's way of telling a story is weird, that that's p cool too. It's just tolerance I suppose.

also fite me irl

It's more funny because of the situation above anything else.

The anime in Japan sucked so hard that when it was given over to the English dubbers they were literally told they could do whatever they wanted, so the writers and actors went wild.

Konnichiwa Senpai, Please notice me,
I watch Asian cartoons, I’m a weeaboo,
I live in my mom’s house. I’m like thirty two,
I collect swords and throwing stars, yes I’m a weeaboo,
Sticks and Stones may break my bones,
But I will always be one step ahead of you,
‘Cause I read the manga,
(You’re such a ****ing pleb, are you even even Japanese bro)
I haven’t showered in like sixteen weeks,
All my friends and peers are ashamed of me,
‘Cause all’O’sudden, I think I’m Japanese
Yes I’m a weeaboo
Yes I’m a weeaboo
Yes I’m a weeaboo
Yes I’m a weeaboo

it's just a different style of animation and usually storytelling as well, not to mention the cultural differences that might interest some people.

i don't really have much of a preference for eastern or western animation tbh, but i can see why people would like or dislike either one.

I'm only planning to watch the ace attorney anime, otherwise I don't see the appeal of it much. Though anime is basically just like cartoons or TV shows mixed with cartoons, but made in a Japanese style(aka anime, me being pointless again) from what I'm aware of.

I'm personally not as fond of anime that fall into shojo or shonen. I prefer anime that are different and more realistic (as in like, if they get stabbed they fall and die rather than still standing after losing gallons of blood and no powers), like Durarara and Baccano.

Also western animation can get inspired by anime, like The Last Airbender and Teen Titans.

I completely agree with you. Anime itself isn't bad, but it's given a bad rep because of weeaboos and people obsessing over anime girls, but not everyone is like that. I do prefer cartoons though to anime.

I swear I see more clichés in anime then Western animation.

I'm not as fond of the ones that have cliches. Like I said in the previous post I prefer anime that are different. Although there are certain shonens and shojos I do like, such as Fruits Basket, Ouran and Rurouni Kenshin.

I also like anime mainly because of the characters. That's why Durarara is my favourite anime since all characters are so well in-depth due to the anime's large focus on character interaction (even more so in the light novel). I honestly like most of the cast, and they'res a lot of characters in it. And legit the characters you think are the weirdos turn out to be the most human, whilst the ones you think are quite human turn out to be psychotic (literally most of the cast except for like, 3 major characters). And Izaya is honestly one of the best antagonists I've ever seen in fiction, and Celty is quite an original protagonist. Also a lot of my favourite characters from anime are from Durarara lol, and I think that's 5?

I wish there was more anime similar to Narita's works tbh.

agreed about the anime girls

anime boys > anime girls

In all seriousness though I swear the anime girls always look look like they're only 10, ie lolis (well the popular ones are at least).

The key difference between anime and western cartoons is that the former favours storytelling, character development, and darker themes, while the latter favours looking as surreal as possible, lack of continuity in favour of being able to tell any miniature story they desire, zany character designs, and visual humour.

That comparison is not absolute (there are plenty of comedy anime that are crazy and don't have much of a continuity, and Western animations that deal with some real dark and mature themes at times, such as a lot of Classic Disney films. Then stuff like Steven Universe have an actual continuity and extensive background lore), but these seem to be the common reasons I see touted by extremists on both sides of the spectrum.

The other thing about anime though, that I think a lot of older people in the west are drawn to, is that the popularity of anime in Japan surpasses live action film and TV. Over here though, cartoons don't touch the popularity of live action films and TV. As a result, older people (basically 15 years old and up, give or take), even in the west, see liking anime as "less weird" compared to liking cartoons. Most Western cartoons are, undeniably, aimed at a family friendly audience. Anime, however, encompasses everything - from children's shows, teen action shows, more realistic thrillers for adults, and even pornography featuring even the most detestable and taboo content like non-consensual sex or sex with minors.

Me personally, I'm dead in the middle. I think Western cartoons are often more charming and easier to get into than anime, but nowadays especially, they tend to lack mature storytelling and usually won't be as compelling or memorable, especially in comparison to anime.

Anime on the other hand, often deals with much more thought provoking themes and has a more detailed and interesting narrative. It's also more common for anime to look jaw droppingly gorgeous compared to Western animation (since the latter is often simple by design). However, the anime industry is very over-saturated due to it basically being "the norm" over in Japan, so for every outstanding anime, you have like, 20 mediocre or bad ones. And of course, there are a lot of things that happen in anime (even in some good ones), that are overdone and often done without rhyme or reason, gratuitous fan service and "waifu/husbando bait" being the big ones (for both sexes - anime ****boi husbandos who go around shirtless all of the time can get just as bad as kawaii waifu bait who constantly have close ups of their jiggling tits and ass).
