Hypothetically speaking lets say I have 10 grand. Assuming I get a decent house or apartment (nothing super fancy) near the L.A. area and spend lets say max 300 dollars a week (This include's food/clothing). Could I last a year?
Again hypothetically speaking

You wouldn't be able to buy a decent house in LA for less than 10 grand

How about an apartment instead of a house?

It's cheaper to live near LA than actually be there. I recommend a place like Garden Grove even though it's filled with Vietnamese people.

Not a chance. At best you can buy a small apartment somewhere near LA and maybe survive a year with that $10k, but even then you basically cannot spend your money on anything other than rent, bills, and the cheapest food possible. If you want a decent house in LA you're going to need to multiply that $10k by about 30 and then you can start talking.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it. Invest in that money and let it build over time until you can rent an apartment somewhere near LA (not necessarily in it) while being able to survive with enough for food and bills. Also of course have a job on hand while doing this or else you're going to run out of resources pretty quickly.

For 10 grand, you probably wouldn't be able to buy a house anywhere, let alone somewhere with ridiculous property values like LA.

$14,000 or less in annual income is legally considered poverty in the United States. 10 grand is nothing.

Why do you even want to live there in the place? There's no reason to live in an expensive city fresh out of school.

Bigger cities have more job opportunities.

Of course there's also more competition so it's a high risk medium/high reward if you don't already live in that city.

I understand the desire for LA then (since it's a hub for film and music) but I would recommend against going out on your own with that in mind and with that little cash on you. There's a lot of competition out there for that stuff and you should probably make sure you are secure financially to be able to live in LA (or within the area) before trying that. It's extremely high risk high reward but I don't think anyone here wants to see you become homeless.

Make sure everything is in order. Have a basic job and invest that money while working on acting/music on the side until you're able to live comfortably or you land a gig.

Not even.
When my parents and I got a towable RV for traveling, we decided to get an old beaten up one on Craigslist to start out. It was still 15k. Our newer one was around 25.

It's not an impossibility, though. Don't try to discourage him. If it's something he really wants to do he has just as much of a chance as anyone else.

Not possible. Renting such for $300 per week and making it last a year, means you'll be in debt to about $5653.25 for rent alone.

You should really consider that amount of competition that you're going to have on that field and set your expectations accordingly.

I mean, it never hurts to keep working for your dreams (and that's what you should do), but never count on chances or expect them to appear. By all means take them if they do, but don't gamble with your future. Always have a back-up plan.

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but you really need to have something to fall back on that will provide you with the means to live. Unlike what the media portrays, success isn't going to be handed to you on a silver spoon. You have to be good, like really good, in order to be even a little successful. This is why it's better to start out as an independent actor, doing stage shows during the night and probably working at a diner or something during the day. Take me for example, I'd like to be voice actress and work at Roosterteeth, however, this is a competitive area of work, as everyone and their dog (Not joking about that either) wants to be famous in some way. My plan is to get into voice acting with a really ****ty mic I have. Now, I might not make it in that world. This is why I've taken to studying psychology. This is something I can fall back on. My backup plan is to either become a school counselor, criminal psychologist, or a detective of some caliber.
10,000, while it might seem like a lot, isn't enough to cover one month in a decent apartment, you'd also still need to cover lights, electricity, food and water. On top of all of this, you'd need money for emergencies. If you really wanted to move out there and live for a year, 10,000 might be enough for a down payment, but you'd need to work for everything else. All of these would add up to being more then about...much more then 30,000 a month. That's just in California.

TL;DR: Get a back up plan, 10,000 ain't worth much in Sunny Cali.

(Sorry if I sounded like a broken record, but it's the truth. Good luck to you, though!)
