I think there are plenty of people that do not know about this, or those that think the TRU BOGO40 and BOGO50 sales save you money, which they don't. I posted this on reddit by request, but I think it should be posted here, too.
First of all, Gamers Club Unlocked is a premium program, you have to pay $30 for it, and it lasts for two years. For that, you get 20 percent off ALL new video games, and this 20 percent applies to Toys to Life figures; Skylanders, Disney Infinity, LEGO Dimensions, and Amiibo. You also get extra trade in credit on trade ins, a percentage off strategy guides, and $10 back on certain games when you preorder them, and then follow through on purchase.
Here is why this is important. Right now, Best Buy has all of Wave 1 available for preorder. And here is how prices break down versus buying elsewhere.
2 Superchargers at Amazon, Target, Wal-Mart = $12.99 x2, $26
2 Superchargers at TRU at $13.99 BOGO40 = $22.40
2 Superchargers at Best Buy with GCU = $20.80
For single purchases, or only a few, that might not be worth the $30 for many people. However, if you were to only buy the two mass retail Dark Editions, you would save $40, which covers the cost of Gamer Club Unlocked, and is an extra $10 saved. For those of us buying all six unique starter packs, we MUST buy one at TRU, so that is $100. if we are able to buy all 6 at TRU, and the BOGO applies to the games, it will cost $419 at BOGO40, or $395 at BOGO50. It was suggested that TRU does not include the game in the BOGO deals, so if that is the case, buying the remaining 5 would cost $415 at MSRP, or $332 at Best Buy. With all of Wave 1, I can't calculate the TRU price, as they don't have the two packs or race pack posted, so I don't know the markup. Buying all Wave 1 figures at Best Buy, all of which are on the site for preorder, would be $156.
If you plan to collect all or most of Superchargers, the Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked is an investment you should strongly consider.

I think other problems arise from it is why a lot don't like to talk about it. Best Buy has a stronger policy for not returning Skylanders as a refusal to what they consider a "video game toy". ToysRus would not be selling these with high income if they took the same stance that Best Buy does with selling them. Also stock is very limited compared to ToysRus.
Anyways the short version is I have had some bad experiences with Best Buy in general.... the employment side and the customer side. I hope people have a better experience then I have with deal with Best Buy. Maybe someone will see the Gamers Club worth the $ for this. I don't know anyone that has had a good experience with Best Buy. If someone has please post about it. On a different note, I do plan to get Steel Plated Smash Hit from Best Buy, that's about it tho. I personally would not invest all of my Skylanders into Best Buy.

I'm going to attempt to expand on what LordElohim stated above. I'm only discussing Wave 1 purchases because Wave 2 is not confirmed but speculated.
The prices below will reflect the Standard Starter Pack + Wave 1/ Dark Starter Pack + Wave 1. Best Buy will have an additional pricing reflecting the $30 Gamer Club purchase. No exclusives are counted and the only "pack" is the Sea Racing Pack. The Double Packs have a release date of 10/2 on BestBuy.com Best Buy: $191.89/$207.89 ($221.89/$237.89) - 20% off everything for 2 years TRU: $238.90/$258.90 Target: $226.90/$246.90 GameStop: $226.90/246.90 - figures and vehicles count towards Skylanders Discount Coupon The Best Buy Gamers Club is an instant discount. If you buy it on 9/20 all your purchases will get the discount immediately. Even with buying the card, you still save $5.01/$9.01 on the entire Wave 1 purchase. For exclusives Best Buy - Steel Plated Smah Hit: $12.99 ($10.39 with BBGC) TRU - Legendary Hurricane Jet-Vac: $13.99 Target - Nitro Stealth Stinger: $14.99 GameStop - Frightful Fiesta: $12.99 (one more Skylander closer to the Discount Coupon) *EDIT - updated to remove sale speculation based on DI3.0 release. Will update once Release Day sales are known.

I have never had a poor experience with Best Buy, as opposed to your mostly poor experiences. You are not supposed to be returning a non-working Skylander to a store, you are supposed to be contacting Activision, which I have done on the few occasions I got a bad figure, and they have replaced it every time. Also, as I think I pointed out in my post, Bestbuy.com has the entirety of Wave 1 available for preorder, so there is no stock problem at all. That includes the mass retail Dark Editions, which TRU is not taking preorders on, and will be first come, first served. Also, the game itself is only sometimes included in the TRU BOGO sales, whereas with Best Buy, you get 20 percent off all new video games, all the time. I imagine that anyone buying Skylanders isn't ONLY buying Skylanders during the course of an entire year.
I don't feel my post was too unclear or confusing, but if you feel you can contribute, be my guest. I can easily post price breakdowns off the top of my head, I don't know what information you have access to that I don't.

So let's talk about the differences between the GameStop Power Up Rewards plus Skylanders Adventure Club versus the Best Buy Gamers Club.
With GameStop ($14.99 a year) you get: Points towards PSN and Xbox Live subscriptions Points towards backpacks, stuffed animals, statues, controllers and headphones Buy 6 Skylanders and get a $10 digital coupon good towards another Skylander figure 10% off Guides and pre-owned games and accessories 10% trade in credit With Best Buy ($30 for 2 years) you get: 20% off new games 20% off any Toys to Life figures Points towards Reward Certificates 50% off Guide welcome gift Buy 2 pre-owned games get 3rd free welcome gift 10% trade in credit 10% off pre-owned games As far as Skylanders goes, GameStop only offers to give you $10 after you purchase 6 new figures. So your 7th figure will still cost you $2.99/$4.99 depending on what you get. Best Buy essentially gives you a free figure after you've bought 5 because you save $2.59/$2.99 with every figure/vehicle purchase.

If you are in the Gamers Club, then you already know that a bulk of your purchases are going to be at Best Buy and the problem comes from the exclusive Skylanders at the other stores.
If you buy all of Wave 1 at BB plus each exclusive at the other retailers it should cost you $231.76/$247.76 plus tax I will update this post once/if more sale information is released for 9/20 *EDIT - removed sale speculation based in DI3.0 release.

I don't think Target will be offering 2 for $20 on Skylanders, simply because all Disney Infinity figures are a single price, but Skylanders have two different price points. Also, I don't recall Target ever having a really competetive day one sale on Skylanders.
It is also worth mentioning that TRU is likely to have the best variety of stock, while Gamestop is likely to have the worst variety of stock, based simply on what they can put on the shelf and what they can store, reasonably. You also neglected the two character/vehicle two packs that Best Buy has up for preorder and TRU does not, both of which are part of wave one, and are cheaper than buying (eventually) individually.

I don't see the 2 packs as part of Wave 1 since they have a release date of 10/2, not 9/20. I also stated that at the beginning of my breakdown.
Also, with the Terrafin Tripple Pack scheduled for Wave 2 it would be pointless buying Terrafin in Wave 1 and or the Double Pack on 10/2. With the Tripple pack you are paying $29.99 for 2 vehicles (which are $14.99/$16.99 a piece depending on the store) and 1 character (which is $12.99/$14.99 depending on the store). So for $0.01 more I can get a figure buy purchasing 2 vehicles. I've been staring at this sheet for 2 weeks already trying to figure out what my daughter and I are doing on 9/20. As for Target, I agree completely. They probably won't do anything but I decided to base my pricing on the recent DI3.0 release. Also, TRU will probably only do a BOGO40 sale at the most. Everything I priced was done on what is known for Wave 1. The only speculation I added was the TRU and Target sales. I plan on adjusting my 2 posts when more information is known.

I was going to open a thread on this-glad someone did it. Keep in mind that vehicles are marked up $2 instead of $1 for the SuperChargers, thus making TRU even less of a good deal.
Also, the Gamer's Club used to be $99...so that $30 is VERY CHEAP. I was all about TRU in past years....I really don't see a need to go there this year unless 1. there's no stock available at Best Buy or 2. exclusives. And, I don't need to buy two for the good deal, I can just buy one. I may not even need to step into a store this year, which would be nice. The return policy discussion is a joke really. Even TRU will "black list" you on repeat returns. I've never had a problem returning defective merchandise to Best Buy or TRU, which would be the only reason why I return it. If folks are buying to scalp and want flexibility, oh well....have no sympathy for you. |

I took the following pricing breakdowns from the respective sites.
Best Buy: $12.99 for figure and $14.99 for vehicle ($10.39/$11.99 with BBGC) TRU: $13.99 for figure and $16.99 for vehicle Target: $12.99 for figure and $14.99 for vehicle GameStop: $12.99 for figure and $15.99 for vehicle TRU is getting ridiculous with its pricing. And if Best Buy can still make a profit at 20% from their pricing that just shows TRU as more of a scam. But it also helps them when they have the BOGO offers because most people just look at that and see a great deal and don't always look at what they are charging normally. *EDIT - looked at the wrong column for the GameStop vehicle price.

Bingo! The $1 difference adds up over time. If BOGO50 is at TRU for midnight launch and first two hours of DAY 1- the starter packs (Dark especially) can effectively be $10 cheaper each IF BUYING TWO. Big assumptions and not sure they are even doing that. Unless they are effectively giving away merchandise like last year (adventure pack given away for purchase of starter) I don't see a reason to visit TRU. However, Best Buy's stock is VERY PROBLEMATIC and may force your hand.

Stock is the reason I keep mentioning bestbuy.com. You can preorder ALL of wave one, which would include all 5 unique mass retail versions of the game, and Gamers Club Unlocked gives you free shipping on orders over $35, and the site shows they would deliver on Monday the 21st. If you NEED them Sunday, stock could be an issue, but online, you can preorder the entire wave.
Also, thank you iceflow for pointing out the two packs are not in wave one, I had never noticed that despite opening the Superchargers page on bestbuy.com at least 10 times. That means I'll grab them at TRU midnight if they have wave two like they did last year. If TRU honors BOGO40 on the games, getting them at TRU versus Best Buy doesn't matter much, but if TRU does BOGO50, you are better off buying multiple copies of the game at TRU. Interestingly, Best Buy is still cheaper with Gamers Club Unlocked even if TRU does BOGO50 at midnight/8am.

I detest all types of club and savings cards as it is never worth the trouble to even figure out the math. Just automatically assume it's not worth it unless you are buying a load of games every week. But if you are that rich, then you probably are not going to worry about saving 5 bucks a week anyway.

The only problem with all these calculations for best buy's gaming unlocked card she speaking of the price for wave one is you don't account for the cost of the program itself, which if I'm correct is 30$. Would buying from TRU really be the worse option then if they do BOGO 40%? From what I'm understanding the answer is no.
I see who the Best Buy membership comes out cheaper if you're already signed up but for those of us who aren't it cancels out the savings (at least for day one)

I have mentioned it on multiple threads and will mention it in this one...TRU sales are a scam because of their markup and their ever so common BOGO 40% sales always equate to a higher cost than Best Buy utilizing Gamers Club Unlocked (GCU). Short of the once a year BOGO 50% midnight launch sales and once a year Black Friday BOGO 70% off sale, you save more at Best Buy with GCU 363 days of the year. No fuss about having to buy 2 figures of equal price at the same time. Plus the huge thing is that GCU stacks with the occasional sales Best Buy runs on Skylanders...that's when you can get amazing bang for your buck. Those who feel these clubs and programs are silly are just lazy and poor with money. Plain and simple - put $30 down now and get 20% off at point of sale for ALL video games and interactive gaming figures for 2 years. All you have to do is provide your phone number at checkout in stores or link your rewards ID to an online Bestbuy.com account. It's not rocket science. Those naysayers and complainers about TRU having a better selection can go spend a few extra bucks on every figure at TRU for the convenience of having more stock to choose from.
Thanks to the OP...this is a public service announcement/thread about stretching your hard-earned money the farthest with Skylanders and it's pretty on point with all the facts. It's not a debate on which retailer is better than any other. If you don't want to share information about cost effectiveness or getting a deal when purchasing Skylanders, please take the whining or flat out oblivious/off-topic posts elsewhere. |

I'm waiting to see what Best Buy's opening day deal is that will stack with GCU before coming up with a plan. You can pretty much assume the only place to get Wave 2 in the first week reliably is going to be TRU (but, if you aren't anxious, it will be everywhere soon and people will be complaining that's all they see after that). They are also a wildcard on their opening day deals. Buy 1 Get 1 50% off is close to GCU, even with the inflated costs - it will be interesting to see what they come up with for the midnight release. Maybe they do better, maybe they fall back on the old Buy 1 Get 1 40% off.

Actually the calculations for the Club purchase are there, they are in parentheses. Also, if you're only buying Wave 1 of Superchargers then you are correct in thinking that while you are saving you aren't saving that much.
But if you plan on buying from Wave 2, 3, 4 and next years game plus all its waves then it's worth a decent look. Not to mention if you are one that needs to have every version of every character. Yes, this initial wave you will save very little, but it will still save you $$$. The next 3 waves are when it starts. Next years game you'll save $20 just on the starter alone. Don't forget Black Friday either since your 20% off stacks on top of the sale prices. I'm sure that Skylanders isn't the only game you play either. Get Lego Dimensions for $79.99 rather than $99.99. On the fence about MGSV? How's $47.99 sound? A lot better than $59.99. You get 20% off any game that is not pre-owned. You get 20% off all upcoming games including The Legend of Zelda WiiU, The Division, Uncharted 4 and Doom 4. At $99 this wasn't such a big deal, but at only $30 for 2 years it's something that should definitely be looked at. As a parent with 3 children I will save way more than that $30 in the first year of use.

It's a bit more complicated than is being made up (at lest the first portion of the thread, got tired of reading, end of work day huzzah!)
First off, someone already mentioned it, but STOCK. If you are there bright eyed and bushy tailed, then yes, you'll have a good selection to choose from. Come at lunch time and they are sold out of most things. They were sold out of friggin Yoda at my local Best Buy. In general they keep a barebones selection, again if you can get there 'first' then you can usually do OK, but its a TOTAL crap shoot in general when it comes to Skylanders. I'm emphasizing Skylanders though as where people buy their video games may vary wildly based on demographic*. Secondly, TRU has its membership & credit card which gives back rewards, some instant, some not. X amount of dollars gets you gift card money, that's the slow burn. The quick burn however is tied to A) 10% off all purchases if done on THURSDAY and ![]() Example, when the wave came out for Trap team that had the light and dark stuff in it? The FIRST one? TRU bumped the release to Thursday because some Amiibos were coming out Friday. I would have spent a little over $250 in full price, but between BOGO pricing (I think 40%), it being Thursday (10%), I paid like $160 and got $5+ back from TRU. And there were NO FEES on top of it all. Am I saying "Go TRU", not exactly. You can't just blindly follow their sales. With DI3.0, Target had $2/20, TRU had BOGO 40%, ended up at $22 or something because their stuff is a buck more across the board. When they wouldn't price match because it was the first day, I politely put everything but my pre-order back, and went across the way to Target. But all the back and forth right now seems super lopsided with discussion being about Best Buy and their program vs others at face value. - Unreall |

Well iceflow76 you do make a valid point when it comes to most use for amount of time, the only problem I run into personally is that I don't make purchases from Best Buy that often. I buy most of my games from gamestop, due to sheer convenience of how close they are to me. My nearest best but is farther away and seems to get poor stock for skylanders not to mention I can't really afford to use the 30$ now but in the near future once I have gotten past this amiibo/skylanders high point I will probably consider it for my other gaming purchases.
I'm not saying anyone else has to buy their products like I do, I'm just saying my own personal situation.

I have the same issue. I have a GameStop 20 minutes down the road and Best Buy is 40 minutes. I could swing by a Best Buy on the way home, but it would add about 20 minutes to my drive. I'm basically using the Gamers Club for big purchases and for other games I don't feel like spending $60 on.
The initial release is the only thing I'll pick up in store, everything else I'll just order so stock won't be an issue. I also like the idea of anything new being on 20% off 24/7, so I don't have to wait and see if any other stores will be having a sale on top of their crazy markups.

I love when I can get Skylanders at Best Buy, getting Mirror of Mystery for $20 was great - but after Wave 1, they are horrible for stocking. If you are patient, you can still do very well on Skylanders, but don't expect to get them right away. But, Gamer's Club is worth so much more than that, I get all my games there unless somewhere else has a really amazing deal. I got Mortal Kombat X for $47.99, plus the pre-order bonus of Goro, plus $10 in Reward credit, plus another two years to my Gamer's Club for an additional $15 - and I pre-ordered the day before it came out.
I also have Star Wars Battlefront and Rise of the Tomb Raider pre-ordered, both give a $10 bonus Reward credit AND have pre-order bonuses on top of only paying $47.99 on Day 1. You simply cannot beat that deal outside of Black Friday, and even then - you also get their Black Friday deals with the 20% discount stacked on top. I plan on getting the Starter this way unless TRU has a really awesome deal at midnight launch like last year. It will probably be at least $39.99, so combined with Elite you can order it on Monday before Thanksgiving and only pay $31.99. We don't open it until Christmas, so waiting isn't a problem. |

I am switching from TRU to BB this year. I'll be keeping an eye out for week 1 sales though. My son's birthday is 16 days away but TRU hasn't sent us a birthday coupon this year :/
I use the app shopkick and it paid for most of my Gamer's club membership with points I had earned. I think BB gives you 1 point per a dollar when you have the cashier scan your shopkick barcode. I know when I upgraded my iphone at BB I received a bunch of points. Every time I go to Target, Walmart, Best Buy, the Mall, etc. I open the shopkick app to earn points at the stores entrance. |

Just checked out the ShopKick app that sissylyne was talking about. If you make all your Wave1 purchases at Best Buy you get 1250 points by spending $200. That gives you a $5 Best Buy gift card. So you not only save $46+ by being the the Gamers Club but also earn a $5 gift card. You can also bank those "kicks" to earn a bigger amount gift card.
Plus you earn the Best Buy Rewards Points.

I actually ran the numbers for purchasing GCU and DI3.0 versus using other sales. And, it came out slightly (few $) cheaper going other sales. It could make sense this time with the amount of starter packs I intend to buy. I will run the numbers again. For me, GCU is a tossup whether it truly saves me money.

it comes down to 1 thing, games outside of Skylanders, i have purchased 4 games the last month and saved 48$...thats 240-48 which is 192, which already paid for the membership. Now with the skylanders coming up, i'll be getting mostly everything through best buy. i did ask today and they said figures dont count? idk, no biggie really as 20$ of the dark starter is worth it.

Figures do count. The register takes it off automatically, as does online. Just make sure they put in your GCU number correctly. I'm planning on getting a bunch at Best Buy, but I'm waiting to see if they have a decent week 1 deal. Last year they gave out Volcanic Eruptor with purchase, not big, but it was something. |

That's super important, and sort of why I'm 'eh' about it. I'm buying Mario Maker, outside of that though, I buy my games from Gamestop - simply because I wait for games to be like $15 to buy now (I wasted too much money buying games and not playing them, so I just hold off now and buy with a purpose, not because I want). So "I" won't save much outside of Skylanders, and the selection they stock just kills buying TtL from there. What IS nice though is BB will price match before applying, so you can get some nice discounts. - Unreall |

If you were to buy this game and the next one then that should make it worth it. If the 7th game comes out before the gamers club expires then that's 3 skylander games with 20% off. That's if they release it earlier yet and you just start the club discount on the 20th.

Nothing beats GCU. I picked it up when I purchased the Xbox One a couple of months ago and I have saved the $30 purchase price countless times over. If you live by a Best Buy, it is a no-brainer. Even if you cannot be there at opening, you can always order the stuff on-line. I couldn't make it out to pick up Disney Infinity stuff until the evening and they were out of some of the figures, so I went on-line. Used the deal they were having combined with the GCU 20% discount to get 4 figures for $33.60. Plus, I picked up the starter pack for $52 and got a $10 reward certificate for preordering. You just cannot beat the deal, if you spend any money on videogames throughout the year.

GCU all the way.
Another stark contrast between the reward programs; with GCU, you gain points at higher rate toward the $5 certificates when you buy games, Skylanders, and other accessories. With TRU, unless they've changed anything recently, you actually accrue LESS points toward the $5 certs with game purchases, and even a fraction of that if it's on sale. Plus TRU's reward certs expire much more quickly than Best Buy's (1-3 months vs 1 year). BB also makes it considerably easier to redeem rewards--they show right up at the register and the cashier should prompt you to use them. At TRU, you have to print them at home or an in-store kiosk (the latter of which has been subject to paper jams at the 2 locations I've witness them used at). Best Buy's credit card also might be worth considering, it's an extra 5% back in rewards (akin to Target's RedCard 5% rewards, just instead of an instant discount it goes toward reward certs), and often times this is bumped between 6%-10% around the holiday season. |

I've seen this gamers club thing from bestbuy talked about quit a lot on these forums but usually programs like this I pay no sight towards. But after looking at it today I think i should have looked into it before. Yeah I already ordered my membership online looks like it might actually be pretty good for me in the long run.
I hate best buy to be honest with you but if your telling me i'm pretty much getting 20% off every new game for 2 years that's actually worth the 30 dollar membership for me. |

In the last couple months I have been switching over all video game stuff to Best Buy. I pre-ordered the wii u Dark edition from bestbuy.com 6 days ago. It was suppose to be here Tuesday. That was fine since I didn't need it till Saturday for my son's birthday. I received an email this morning saying it was on back order till early to mid October. I am VERY MAD! I could have grabbed a dark wii u game in store yesterday but now they are out of stock. I am sure Best Buy knew before this morning that they did not have enough stock.

I just won't do pre-orders. Too many stories of it being hit-or-miss.

Best Buy employees were kinda rude to me yesterday...didn't seem to want to help. as soon as I start minding my business though, I'll get accosted by several employees asking if I need help. Funny. I can totally understand why someone remains loyal due to the customer service...might be worth the savings for that peace of mind.

At my store I went by to look. They had a mobile rack behind customer service. I had to ask to see them before they would hand me one. They didn't even put them out yet. They might sell more figures if people could actually see them ...

so i got Dark Edition PS4 and regular Edition Xbox One, all the single packs, and i happen to find a 30th anniversary Mario Amiibo it rang up at 340$ when they put my gamers club code in 245$, almost 100$ in savings, which paid for itself.

I would call customer service and have them perhaps locate a store that has it available to hold it for you (if you have a Best Buy nearby). I preordered the Wii U dark edition quite a while back and I should get it today according to tracking information. Although I sympathize with your situation, Best Buy online has been very quick in mailing stuff out to me recently and I would assume that's a one off situation. The Steel Plated Smash Hit and Fiesta I ordered from them yesterday is out in the mail already. |
