Jimmy Kimmel Attacks People Who Watch Playthroughs

Quote: Forbes
Last week, in conjunction with the launch of YouTube Gaming, Jimmy Kimmel did a short two-minute skit poking fun at the concept of video gaming streaming, aka, watching someone else playing a video game online...
The self-appointed “gamer community” took it upon themselves to demolish Kimmel all weekend, thumbsdowning the video on YouTube so that it racked up 75,000+ dislikes, and posting 14,000 comments, some of which defend streaming and eSports, most of which attack Kimmel directly.

Original video:

Jimmy's response to the comments:

These videos generated an overwhelming negative response, below are just a few comments directed at Jimmy Kimmel:

Or "respect other people's opinions even if you disagree with them" which goes for both sides. I wouldn't love video games so much if it wasn't for Let's Plays but I won't insult someone for not understanding that - call them out on their rudeness, yes, but not stoop down to their level.

I'm not going to watch the video right now or get angry since it's probably just a poorly conceived "stereotype and over-simplify subject X to get reactions out of community/person Y" joke that tends to be all the rage these days, but I personally watch let's plays and such because:

-Sometimes I either wanna see what a game is like before playing it, or I don't have the money for a game right now so I watch some footage of it to quench my thirst for the game.

-I like to see competitive players and speedrunners be amazing at the game, and if it's a game I love to play, I take mental notes from that to improve my own play.

-Regarding games with a modding scene, subscribing to a channel that specialises in showcasing mods for a game is a good way to keep up to date on what kind of mods are available.

-In single-player games, sometimes watching an LP from a dedicated and knowledgeable fan of a game/franchise can lead to you discovering secrets, tricks, or trivia regarding the game that you may not have discovered yourself.

-Walkthroughs are just helpful and help you progress through a game. Videos with commentary are the best format for that as they can provide the most accurate info easier than other formats. This is pretty much required for a lot of old games, and even with a more modern game like Kingdom Hearts for example, guides are helpful for figuring out the fastest way to get item synthesis materials and what not, stuff that's pretty much impossible to figure out on your own in a reasonable amount of time.

-There are certain LPers I watch dedicatively because I just really like the people. This can be because they present their content in a creatively pleasing manner, they are smart or have a good sense of humour (better than Kimmel's, in a lot of cases smilie) making them entertaining to listen to and watch, etc. I tend to watch LPers that seem to have similar tastes to me simply because I don't really have anyone like that IRL and it's nice to hear someone with similar views to me on gaming every once in a while.

-LPs are good for research purposes as they can be an indicator of a game's popularity/infamy, or can give you an idea of people's general opinions and interpretations of certain aspects in a game. For example, there are an alarming amount of people who misinterpret Rosalina as being a princess (among other misinterpretations about her), which I see a lot in YouTube videos and comments sections. And it's kinda interesting to watch phenomenons like that play out.

Is it bad that I slightly agree with/understand the original video's point?

Now don't get me wrong here guys. I do watch a couple of LPers (Critikal and Super Best Friends Play). And I definitely understand the appeal of esports and watching professional players who have dedicated their time to learning everything about the game and being the best in the world at it.

But for the most part I view LPs as just sitting there and watching someone else play the game when I could easily play the game instead and enjoy myself. I don't find watching someone play a video game all the way through (including boring bits or parts where they're stuck and just "UHHHH"s and "UMMM"s) entertaining. One might notice that the two LPers I enjoy both make use of editing and specific comedic style that makes the video both entertaining to watch and entertaining to listen to (which is what I do a lot with Youtube videos while I go do other things, including playing games of my own). Not to mention Super Best Friends has multiple people playing or watching, allowing them to work off another in conversation and create jokes (compared to many LPers who go solo and nothing else).

The only time I watched an LP all the way through was DSP's Heavy Rain LP many years ago, and it was mostly for the story of the game as I thought I'd never have a PS3. But otherwise a lot of LPs are just people getting stuck and not saying much entertaining in the meantime, or somebody yelling into the mic obnoxiously and not saying much entertaining either. At least in my own personal opinion.

I don't oppose the idea of watching someone play video games like Kimmel seems to, and I did mention exceptions and I can understand why other people may enjoy people like Pewd or Markiplier or **** it even DSP. It's just not really for me most of the time and I'd rather play the game myself.

That said, I'm open to being proven wrong and having people suggest new LPers for me to check out.

The first video didn't offend me whatsoever, I took it as joke, I found it quite amusing. However, his responses were out of line and I can see how many would take offence from the second and third video.

It may sound weird but the only let's plays that I watch are of games that I've already played. For example, once I've completed Skylanders: SuperChargers I will go ahead and watch Blitzwinger's playthrough. I enjoy watching eSports (depends what game) and championships ect but I can't watch a whole playthrough of a game that I've never played because the chances are, if I enjoy part 1 and 2 of a playthrough I will just go out and buy the game for myself.

Well, if the person is entertaining enough, even the boring parts of LPs are cool.
That said, I can't afford most consoles or games, so it's really the only way I have to experience them without being piracy which, unless it's a super old game that isn't being sold to support the devs anymore, I won't do to begin with. Sure, it's a cheap way out, but life is too short to be waiting for that day I can afford Super Paper Mario or something - I just go and see Chuggaaconroy's LP since it also has a LOT of things I might've never found out on my own as well, and he's... Uh.. Probably funny enough to watch all the way if horrible puns are your thing and for me it is; but it's just an example.

Whilst I disagree with his opinion 99.9%, its Jimmy Kimmel. He's pretty controversial with his opinions already and I'm not even surprised that he made these videos, they were bound to get hate in the first place, even more so due to the fact that he targeted gamers, who can get pretty vocal at times.

EDIT: I need to learn how to grammar...

i could honestly go on why people like lets plays and streamers.

1. streamers and lets players sort of emulate the feeling of being with a friend. i don't know how it does this but it somehow does.

2. we like to see the reaction streamers and lets players have like at a death scene or scary moment.

3. lets plays will always be better then marketing ever will, as lets plays show the actual reaction the player has to the game and that shows what they think about it.

It does the same way you have a family member or friend playing a single-player game you've never seen and having them show that to you, probably explaining what they think it's good about it and stuff. That definately happened to me when I was younger, it probably happens to a lot more people nowadays too.

There's a difference between making a joke to be humorous and just being exceptionally rude and ignorant to your viewers.

Seriously, I lost all respect for Kimmel after this. I'm so tired of the media constantly trying to give gaming a bad rep like this. I mean yeah he got a lot of threats for this and i agree that's going way overboard, but I'm so sick of people like Kimmel constantly stereotyping people who play games or watch LPs as just a bunch of lonely losers who have nothing better to do with their time.

Well before I go on, let me just preface this by saying "I watch LPs" doesn't necessarily mean people watch them all the way through, and I think Kimmel is making a stab at the idea of watching them AT ALL, regardless of how long.

But not all LPers are like Pewdiepie and Game Grumps where they can't play for crap, often get angry at the game for their own poor play (that's more a GG thing than a Pewds thing, though. Well, more specifically Arin/Egoraptor), and mostly talk about stuff completely unrelated to the game (GG is literally just a podcast at this point in which they talk about sexual or gross things all of the time and then talk about the game on occasion or when something weird happens. Unless it's a game Arin hates, in which case, he will make it his mission to show Danny "how bad it is").

Me personally, I generally tend to prefer LPers who often are very knowledgeable about the games they are playing and therefore actually talk about it the majority of the time, offering helpful advice, personal experiences with the game, thought provoking discussion, or jokes actually related to the game. Really makes you feel like you can relate to what they are saying.

I could link you examples if you wanted.

Just an update:
Jimmy decided that he wanted to be 'educated' on the subject matter so he met with two popular let's players to play a game of rocket league. I think that this is really good of him especially since he could have just swept it under the rug. I don't agree with any of the death threats and comments, in all honesty it makes gamers look bad, it stereotypes us all.

I had no idea Let's Plays had become such a huge thing. I mean I knew they were popular and such, but this is a whole other level entirely.

Guess that's part of getting old. Just comes a point when you can no longer relate to "kids these days".

Edit: I should say though that I definitely see the appeal in watching Let's Plays (unlike, say, professional sports, which I see no appeal in at all), so maybe I'm not too old just yet.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. If you're really getting defensive over something as dumb as this, you might as well be the person to get mad at McDonalds for putting way too little mayo on your Hot n Spicy.
