I don't think she should've been fired, but I wouldn't exactly call her actions appropriate.


Some people take offense to being called by their race, some don't. You really shouldn't do it until you know them personally.


All my life, I've been going to mostly black schools (my high school was actually 83% black) and I can tell you, as much as I hate to admit it, sometimes race is an issue. It's really easy to say "people shouldn't care about race" when you're white. Just saying.

Not to say I don't agree, because I do, but I am saying that you should at least try to understand where people are coming from in this issue. Try to understand how they feel.

I still don't get how saying "black" is considered racist. Like I really don't know why people call me out when I say it as if I was saying the n word.

Well I mean she is claiming the only distinguishable trait about the couple is their race. So yeah, it is kinda racist. :/ Unless she happens to label all the white people at the restaurant as "white couple" too. I dunno whether being fired was necessary but...

Don't project your standard onto other people. Just because you don't think that being called black is a big deal, doesn't mean that's how they feel. Even if you can't comprehend why they take it as an insult, they obviously can.

I agree, she should not have been fired. IMO, it shouldn't have been such a big deal and the couple shouldn't have taken offense. My nickname to a lot of people is either Asian or Korean and i don't care. Although, being called black has had a bad history while asian not so much, but still.

Because you're expecting someone whose perspective you do not know, nor understand, to have exactly the same viewpoint as yours in this situation, while not even trying to understand their point of view.


Like I said, it's very easy to disregard racial matters when you're white, and it's tenfold easier when you're white and have spent most of your life unexposed to other races (not saying that's you, but the way you approach this issue kind of implies it). Being a white American means you're probably not used to being labeled, or judged, or treated differently in any way. You're not used to people avoiding you, or giving you special attention (or lack thereof). You're not used to feeling like you have a disadvantage, politically, economically, or socially.


Of course, that's not to say I don't believe in unity, because I do - I am 100% against race baiting. But I'm not going to try to tell people that racism doesn't exist, or that race is a trivial matter, because I know how deeply it can run for some. And I try to respect that.

I just addressed this with Dragoncamo's post. Nobody doesn't have the right to be offended by anything, even if it is something as simple as having their race pointed out.

That said, it would certainly be a prick move for the manager to respond like "Oh get over it you over sensitive crybabies." But instead he took it to the other extreme and fired the waitress.

By this restaurant's logic, the journalists, news sources etc. who said "White cop shoots unarmed BLACK" teenager after Ferguson should be fired.

You can feel offended by anything anyone says, but there comes a point where society has to say "You're offended, and I understand that, but we cannot keep accommodating for your taking offense to the simplest of things."

tl;dr we don't want a society where everything is dictated by duh feelz

Honestly, at work, it helps. We don't have sections , so to know who's helping who we'll be like "the black couple" or Hispanic/Asian /white

Like Jacko said, it doesn't matter if you're black or white.

It's not as if white and black people bleed a different colour, it all comes out red.

After July Fourth, I went to the park and saw that there was a lot of firework garbage left all over the ground in the parking lot. I started picking it all up and one kid came and helped me. He came out of a car that was sitting in the lot, had a few other kids in it, but they were waiting around for whatever reason. I think the mom was on a phone call or something. After a while one of the other kids asked if they could help, too, and the mom said "nah, he's got it."

It took me a while to realize that she might not have trusted me partially because I'm white and they were all black, rather than only because I was some random dude going around picking up trash at a public playground.

I mostly just wanted to be a good role model for my 7 year old brother who was with me, too. :L
