Easiest way is to know somebody that works at Toys R Us. I have never seen one in the wild and have looked quite often. I am almost always the first one when new shipments come in, so more than likely the workers take them all for themselves.

Only way is to constantly check in several stores and ask to look through boxes. You'll have to explain why if you want to convince some employees
Yeah, you pretty much won't find any now unless you're really lucky.

It's nearly impossible thanks to greedy employees.

There's not trick to finding chase variants. That's why they're called "chase", as you have to keep chasing around to find them. It all boils down to luck. Getting to the store as they open the cases (or convincing the employees to let you open all their cases, which is usually frowned upon by most employees). I got lucky and found a purple Lightning Rod at one time. Only time I ever came across one. It's really no different than trying to find that rare card variant in a bunch of trading card packs.

I found a stone zook on the release of giants, and after I put it in my cart some kid tried to steal it from me. I also just randomly found a silver/gold (or whatever colors it was, I forget) Stink Bomb at target.

Kids care about chase variants ? Curious . Most kiddies in my part of the woods avoid those .

It's more of a matter of luck in finding one. They're made to be "chase" for a reason, but for the most part, Chase Variants rarely ever make it to store shelves. Employees usually end up snapping them up first, and then it just goes down a chain from there. Employees > Employee Friends/family > Early Morning Scalpers > General Public > You.

Yeah I've never understood the appeal of non-ingame variants. Heck, it annoys me even when a character's upgrades change their appearance so they don't perfectly match the figure anymore. If I'm going to buy a toy that represents a character in a game, I want the toy and the ingame character to be as identical as possible.

You'll never get a perfect match anyway, the ingame model will always have some detail that would just be a waste of time to put on the figure, or it's not the same effect. I like ingame variants if I don't like the default palette over it(Ninjini comes to mind, Pop Fizz maybe but I got Love Potion because he was cheaper), but otherwise I don't lose sleep over getting the regular version.
