If you need to get rid of it for a particular reason and there isn't a garbage nearby to spit it out into, it won't hurt. I just wouldn't make a habit of it.

The 7 years myth is a lie, as expected - likely designed to convince kids not to swallow because a large amount could cause constipation and parents don't really want to or know to explain that.

I figure for most adults it wouldn't hurt to swallow. We don't digest fiber, either, and that's necessary for ehh... consistent bowel movements. As I already said, I just wouldn't make a habit of it.
