Okay, so we've all got that aunt or uncle or cousin that we've seen maybe once or twice in our whole lives and therefore have no real connection with, right?

And then that person dies, and you go to the funeral, and you're surrounded by more family members who you just barely know (hell, you don't even know them AT ALL)......


....But they know you.


And they shake your hand and hug you and talk about what a bright future you have and how you're going to go so far in life and if you ever need anything just give them a call and they love you like their own.


Thursday, a great aunt of mine died. She'd had a heart attack and was in the hospital for the past few weeks, and finally she just moved on. I'd only seen her twice in my whole life, so I wasn't that close to her.

The funeral was today. All of my distant family members, who I didn't even know, were congratulating me on getting into university and getting my scholarships and just all that I'd done. They'd heard about all of it.


I was touched.


Family is important, guys. You never know how long you'll have them.

Family, yes it is important, but remember kids, just because their in your family, doesn't mean that you have to like/love them.

Don't ever feel forced to like or respect someone who won't respect you.

You know, you don't have to go out of your way to contradict every traditional value someone posts here. I think we get the point.

My condolences, and congratulations on the college, but something kind of bugged me about this post.

Family isn't always important. It's important to have a sort of family, but blood relation doesn't mean anything.
I go to big family gatherings like funerals and weddings all the time. It's honestly remarkable how little people in my family care. My cousins are a professor at Princeton and a genius engineering student with a 4.15 GPA and a paid internship at one of the biggest engineering firms in the state. What am I doing? Going to community college so I can be a high school history teacher. All I get for that is a forced "Nice." or maybe even a "Good luck!" if they're feeling generous. And that's just my extended family.

My grandmother openly says I'm going to hell because I'm bi and she's mega Christian. My father treats me like trash. The only family member that remotely cares for me is my mother, but even then she's prone to fits of anger.

I forged my own family. I gathered a support group of people that actually care for me, because no one related to me by blood actually does. They may be just "friends" but they're the closest things I have to a family, so I'll stay loyal to them as long as I live. I might never even meet them, but at least they care about me.

Blood relation may matter to other people, but it doesn't mean **** if they don't care about you.

I think the fact you want to be a teacher is amazing, you can help kids make good decisions, teach them to help them in the world. Maybe even inspire some.

We aren't friends btw.

I don't think she was trying to do that, she was just sharing her views. This is a forum where we are allowed free thought is it not?
I have family that I don't like or love.

Last time I saw anyone outside my immediate family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and 1st cousins was my sister's bat mitzvah... six years ago. <.>;

On a slightly funnier note, my 80something great aunt on the other side of the family wrote a young adult murder drama, got it published.........And it's the worst book I've ever read in my life.

Same. My grandma wrote a bunch of romance novels. I haven't read them but they look really trashy, like the kind you see sold at book fairs for like 50c. Also kinda related to the main topic she died like last year, but I'd only ever met her like once when I was like 1. I never went to the funeral tho, cause it was like the complete other side of the world.
