I sometimes use custom moves, but from what I can tell the default moves each character has are usually the best ones. ...That's my opinion anyway.

The general consensus for custom moves is that which ones are best is based on player preference (do you want Mario to shoot the regular fireball, or would you prefer one that's fast and goes straight, but isn't as strong?) and match-ups (Rosalina's Gravitational Pull is great against projectile-oriented characters, but it's pretty much useless against characters without a projectile, so she's better off using Catch & Release or Luma Guardian instead. Also, in the Peach match-up, Luma Guardian is the best pick, because while Peach does have a projectile with the turnips, it's an "item based" projectile, and Rosalina can still draw those towards her with the Luma Guardian custom, plus she still gets the giant, invincible Luma to protect against Peach's normals). You're generally trading something off for a different kind of strength.

However, there are some instances where a custom is just objectively better than the default. Pikachu's Heavy Skull Bash custom is objectively better than the default in every way, it's pretty much a straight up upgrade rather than a variation with a trade-off - charges faster, shoots across in an instant, does more damage and knock back, and has no trade off from what I can tell (it might have less range but if it does it's not by much because I never noticed). His Paralysing Thunderbolt is also better than the default Thunderbolt as the paralyse effect is really potent, and in combination with the Meteor Quick Attack custom, you can perform an infinite combo with him.

And of course, Palutena is infamous for being pretty low tier without customs, but shoots straight up to high tier with customs.

As far as Custom moves go, I really like using Fox's Twisting Fox and blaster specials. I don't know why, but I have a lot of fun using the Twisting Fox. It's not as fast as his normal move, but it has shorter start-up and I think it does more damage and has better launching abilities.

I haven't seen anyone say Marth is bad. They say he's nerfed from Melee/Brawl, but he's still good.

People usually **** on Lucina instead.

Marth and Lucina are kinda bad in general because they lost the speed Marth used to have in past games, plus they have less range than Marth has. In particular, a lot of the newcomers barrel right through them (Shulk, for example, is the new "long ranged sword" guy). A lot of Marth's moves were just nerfed in general.

Marth is the better of the two since his Smash attacks can KO early if he lands the tipper and having the distinction between the tipper and the hilt means he can vary his combos more. But this also means he has a higher skill floor. Lucina is there for those who like Marth's moves but don't want to put as much effort into spacing. However, since the animations of the moves are still identical to Marth's, you're better off spacing with Lucina anyway as Marth's move animations were built with the spacing gameplay in mind. And at that point, you'd be better off playing as Marth.

Lucina is one of those characters that I main just because I like her, have played her game (unlike Marth) and am already familiar with the moveset (having briefly mained Marth in Melee). Marth is the better character but I often fail to catch many attacks with the tip, and can spend too much time in the match worrying about if I'm at the correct distance to take full advantage. With Lucina I still have to maintain some distance, but there isn't as much penalty for not hitting with the very end of the sword.

Sure she's "Baby's First Marth" but I just prefer to use her.

I think one time there was a huge amount of lag. After the match ended (forgot who won) I was greeted with something along the lines of "LAGGER" and "YOUSUCK" and then they left.

For the most part I don't get anything other than typical players that don't change their name, and sometimes people who are relatively nice and say things like "GG".

I once went against a player who played as donkey kong and his tag was EXPANDDONG and they 2-stocked me. after the match they changed their tag to CANTHANDLE, then to THEDONG, and left.

Greatest online match I ever played.

I once was playing FG as Mac, and was pitted against a Rosaluma. As one would against a Rosalina while playing Mac, I lost. (That matchup is terrible for LM.)

I play for one more round and end up beating him, after the match he changes his name to "MAC_SUCKS" and left.
