Background info: I use my mom's laptop because mine isn't working.
Mom: bring the laptop into my room when you're done, which will be in 5 minutes
Me: I don't think I will be done in 5 minutes
Mom: too bad
5 mins later
*brings laptop into her room*
Me: why do I even need to bring your laptop into your room overnight? Can't I just leave it in mine?
Mom: no
Me: why?
Mom: it's a sign of respect (lol wat)
Me: how is it a sign of respect?
Mom: maybe you should think about it
Me: I have thought about it and I couldn't come to a conclusion so I asked you.
Mom: well maybe if you can't think of how it's respectful, you shouldn't use my laptop in the future.
End conversation
So basically, because I couldn't reason out how bringing the laptop into my mom's room was a sign of respect, I can't use it. Can anyone back up her argument?

You're borrowing her laptop. She's your mom, so you should still respect her by returning it to her, even if it's just for the night.

No offense but your mom sounds...Iunno, I don't wanna say rude things but her argument makes no sense, it isn't even an argument, she didn't explain herself, she refused to lay all her cards on the table.
If my mom had a laptop and I was like 'ayo mom, let me borrow your laptop' she'd be like 'aight, bring it back when you're done' the end

It was rather rude on her end.... But at the same time I suppose it's supposed to show respect for her and her things by honoring her wishes to bring it back safely to her when you're done with it. Truly, I'd say it's more showing responsibility by putting it back where you got it when you're finished with it and not damaging it than showing respect, but eh... the point is still the same in the end.

It's her laptop and she could be paying bills which you need for the Internet.

But I still don't understand how me not understanding how it shows respect (at the time) means I can't use her laptop. Quote: spyro and sonic

She's always like that. When she doesn't want to argue or she knows she's wrong, she says "I'm not going to argue with you", but if I say similar, she says I'm being rude. If I call her rude for saying she won't argue (I still don't understand how it's rude but w/e), I'M called rude for calling her rude. I understand that, but I don't understand how she can call me rude and expect me not to be offended and I can't. |

I get really paranoid when people use my things and don't put them back where they got it, so I can see where she's coming from. She may have been a bit harsh about it, but it is her laptop, and she is your mother, and regardless of who or what it is, you need to take care of somebody else's property. It's showing respect because you're taking the time to honor her wish and in her eyes it probably shows responsibility too, like what Seiki said.

I have to agree with your mother. She asked you to return her property and simply questioning her direction is a lack of respect on your end. I'm not sure why your laptop is broken, but could that explain why she wants her laptop returned to her room when you're done?

The logic is that she used the "respect" part as an excuse. She simply doesn't want you to use her laptop all night.
It's not such a big deal really, and besides, it is your mother's computer. |

I wish she would just tell me that she just didn't want me using it at night other than "think about it". That would've been an easier way and would've avoided an argument. |

You can tell her that. Next time you have an argument like that, tell her that it's okay with you if she doesn't want you to use her laptop at night, and that you will respect her wish if that's what she wants. |

Maybe because it's her laptop and she wants it somewhere that she knows it'll be safe. It's not like it's a complicated task to begin with. It's her laptop, she's your mother, be a good boy and respect her wishes when she's concerned about her property. And if you're gonna do what she says anyway, why is this even an issue? Like... I don't really get the problem here.

The laptop isn't the problem. I wanted to know the logic behind the "if you can't see why it's respectful, you can't use it" comment. |

There is logic, but only from her point of view, I doubt that she is doing this just out of meaness, or hate, so she most likely sees it as logical, or, like most people, doesn't think much of it. I've had similar situations, and you have all the reason to question it, and be a little paranoid, I would feel the same~

Adding to this, tbh I wouldn't want someone using my stuff either if they aren't going to at least do what I ask them to do when they're using it. |
